Novice calypsonian in hot water

Novice calypsonian Link “Lightening” Luke has pleaded guilty along with two other friends Egbert Benjamin Jr and Dwight Baptiste all of Mahaut to the offence of theft.

The trio appeared before Magistrate Ossie Lewis on Friday afternoon after being arrested and charged for stealing  $866.58 worth of items which they stole from the storeroom of N & J Minimart in Mahaut.

The items included a box of smoke herring, a bag of sugar, a pail of pig snout and a pail of pig tail and two boxes of water.

A charge of theft was also brought against the rookie calypsonian for stealing a ripping iron from another Mahaut resident.

He admitted to police that he used to tool to damage the padlocks used to secure the store room where the items were kept.

One of the three – Benjamin denied that he assisted in stealing the items but admits that he helped to hide them after they were stolen.

The magistrate fined the young men $500 each for the offence and ordered them to each pay $290 in compensation to the owner of the minimart by 31st May, 2012.

They face 6 weeks in prison if they fail to pay up.

Luke was also ordered to pay for the damage of the padlocks in the sum of $198.

Well, well well. You disappoint Ossie. Did you take off the mask to look at the pig snout and pig tail?. Good topic for next year…”The Mask Fell In De Shop”

Now you have to pay for a padlock and plus for your crime..But if I was the judge (Ossie) Your punishment would be writing calypso for all the young people in Mahaut….

Alas, the bible that we must not punish a man for stealing food, but instead let him pay it back.

Sad to hear. But he needs to stop the wrong doings and move on in a positive direction. He should take his drawing seriously and make money from the art. Sell to the tourist and whoever. If he can’t afford the materials to start with; he can identify himself and make a plea to get the materials. Then he can change his name from lightening to ‘light;’ as there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

This gives people no reason to steal even though they are poor. It really is not worth a criminal record. There are always generous people who could have given them if they were in dire need of.

Since I heard this guy’s calypso,I suggested to many that he should be arrested and questioned. The anecdotes therein were too convincing to be ignored.
With sufficient guidance this guy could win the crown….He has so much potential!
This is your second chance young man….Do Good!

      May 11, 2012

      @ huh

As you stated, this was a red flag based on the lyrics. He was sending an immoral message and what he would do. Some of them are radicals and lawless. I do hope he will try to make something better with his life and stay away from bad company.

  19. Realist
    May 11, 2012

Sad, Someone better ensure that these young men are given a regular job. Calypso is good but it is seasonal and can’t pay the bills.

Lightning, thankfully you were spared the prison. But please try the straight and narrow, it is harder but safer. Your legendary “quickness” was a fleeting thing and it won’t work since things are tight around so businessmen will try thier best to catch thieves. So just ask for help, many will turn you down but a few will help.

you can clearly see that the boys were hungry. alas

    • Justice and Truth
      May 11, 2012

      @ Anonymous

Were they truly hungry? You should ask them instead of making such a statement. If people are hungry they do not steal a big amount. They steal enough for them to eat a meal. In any case, they should ask and not steal. Asking is better than stealing. Does the government not have a department that could assist them financially? Is there any reason to steal and tarnish their character?

Purchase some meat and make the broth. All of us would like some meat and broth but we will purchase the meat and not steal it.
My family and I just bought a big Pizza in Toronto. I have some different pizza recipes. Eventually I plan to make some homemade. I love homemade cooking. Hm, hm! Delicious! Once in a while a treat is good, especially on a Friday evening after a hard work week. Saturday is a good day for making broth
