Offensive weapons dominate 34 Carnival arrests

arrestedThe police have reported that 34 arrests were made during the two days of Carnival street jump up in Roseau alone.

The majority of the arrests were for offensive weapons, police PRO, Claude Weekes, said in a live interview with state-owned DBS Radio on Wednesday.

“We are doing our post mortem with regards to Carnival, it is not finished yet, I just came to give this brief,” he said. “I can tell you for two days, Monday and Tuesday, and this is in respect only to the Roseau catchment area, we made 34 arrests and they were predominantly for offensive weapons.”

Weekes said he hopes that the police and other stakeholders will develop a strategy to deal with the issue.

“We just cannot allow any great festive activity, including Carnival, to be marred of blighted by any form of violence or weapons of offense,” he said.

In the run up to Carnival the police had described offensive weapons as firearms, cutlasses, knives, sticks, stones and bottles.

One man, Ken Mitchel, was stabbed and killed on J’ouvert morning.

Any one found with a weapon on the streets, especially during carnival celebrations is most probably up to ‘no good’; therefore should immediately be arrested and charged with criminal intent because the forces of the dark usually use a crowded situation as cover to perpetrate devious behavior.
Consider this scenario: a visitor comes to Dominica, to have a good time and falls victim to one of those entities who does what he does best; then disappears into the crowd only to repeat his actions again and again; he then becomes the victor over his victims while the visitors’ family experience a nightmare; moreover down goes the tourist industry among other things because this is a small world and the word spreads fast . We should therefore treat this as a security breach. Let’s be proactive.

the carnival laws are so not good…u need to get tough wit persons carrying ice prickers etc..10000 fine or 6mths..n prove ur innocence.. not the normal way to proceed for carnival offences..the police should just arrest and the perks fight there battle.

Guns and weapons of any sort should be entirely banned. Consider this for next year’s Carnival. These criminals are discouraging others especially those who reside overseas to as much as visit their land of birth and at such a time.
I am unable to comprehend people go out to have fun and carry guns and other weapons with them. Your motive is evil.
You troublemakers, DO NOT SPOIL CARNIVAL for those who are only out for enjoyment. Some of them are hard workers and look forward to those Carnival days to enjoy themselves. They are your fellow people. Therefore, keep this in your head and show love and consideration for your fellow people. OK! You unhappy and wicked lot, what you sow you will surely reap and two-fold.
If the Good Lord wills, I may visit for Carnival. There is a certain band/group in Roseau I would play Mas with. There is no pushing and shoving. Everyone who plays Mas in that band has an enjoyable time. I will not divulge it. Some of you know which one.

It seems like people are not even free to enjoy a festive moment. Some Dominicans are following in the footsteps of these so-called developed countries and the level of crime and violence is on the increase. Something needs to be done. I believe that the prime minister should address this issue and bring back order to our once peaceful nation. We cannot accept this barbaric behaviour that some people have taken adopted. WE need peace in this country once more.

Anyone found to be carrying a dangerous/offensive weapon at Carnival should be arrested! His/her intention is unquestionably dishonourable. They came to spoil the party. Jail them!!.
