Parent attacks student at school

abuseInvestigations are presently ongoing into an incident which occurred at a primary school in the Roseau catchment area between a parent, who is a teacher at a well-known secondary school in the city, and an 11-year-old student.

According to reports, the parent went to the school earlier this week after her child reported to her that the 11-year-old had called her “Ebola”.

Not amused, the parent took the matter into her own hands and went in search of the child at the school.

It is further reported that the parent began shaking her keys in the face of the 11-year-old in full view of students and school officials.

He then pushed her and a scuffle ensued.

The 11-year-old eventually held the parent in a headlock and in the process the student got bitten.

“This is very unfortunate and has to be condemned,” one person with information on the matter told DNO.

Officials of the school where the incident occurred are not commenting.

The matter has been reported to the police and the Ministry of Education and it is presently being investigated.

The Ministry of Education was contacted and this is what one official said, “The matter is being investigated and the Ministry has a zero tolerance policy on any form of child abuse and as such any such report will be investigated.”

If the school was doing nothing to stop this form of bullying then the only choice would be for the mother who birthed and raised up her flesh and blood to take matters into her own hands. The headline of the story is “Parent Attacks Student at School”…. What about the rest of the story??… What about the fact that the whole class was teasing this child and it was probably being orchestrated or also encouraged by this boy… As Dominicans we cannot stand for these forms of Injustice…. This point of view was from a parent and not a teacher so her job should not be jeopardized…

School yard bullying was a huge issue during the elections but some of us saw nothing wrong with it. That was a perfect time to open an unbiased discussion on the subject of school yard bullying that evidently still occurs in schools as late at this week. Some people stayed away from the subject completely. Why?

Something I understand that affected both the child that was bullied and the one who did the bullying, throughout their adult lives and can been seen even today. It would be interesting to know the people involved in this latest school yard bulling and who are the people throwing blame.

    I’m I reading rightly?????
As parents we have a responsibility to protect our children but we also have to control our arrogance and ignorance. It clearly states that the parent is a teacher, as a teacher you out to be rationale, speak to the Principal of the school, get some insight, isn’t that what you teach your students…..Is it a don’t do and let me do? What if the shoe has to be placed on the child’s parents feet? DNO would surely have a massive story to publish.

Parent;, be vigilant, slow to anger, love your children in the right ways.

It’s unfortunate that this parent had to take matters into her own hands due to the fact that the school neglected the situation. The right thing would have been to refer the matter to the parents, of the accused child, in hopes that things would straighten itself out. Seeing that’s not the case, I believe both parties should be punished. The 11yrs old is guilty because he was the catalyst to this mess and he threw the first hit. The parent is just guilty for addressing the boy. In all of this, I hope the child of the parent has not been scared by this.

Parents need to sit their children down and make them understand that other Peoples children are not their punching bags or their cell Phones that they can use words of abuse on them anytime they feel the need,, when they feel frustrated they can easily take it up with their parents who gave them up without home training, a set of little people behaving any how and if other decent children refuses to take part in their assiness they feel the need to abuse them physically and verbally and if you the Parent would talk to them no matter how polite, they are just as ready for you. give me a brake Children who are more grown up than grownups

It is shocking to read and rather strange that a mother, a teacher would go to another school and confront a child about teasing her child.
This mother should have informed the principal of the school about it and in no uncertain way, to inform her students to cease their bullying, in this case, calling others names and such a name.
Granted, the mother was angry. She retaliated against the child. According to the Law an adult should know better not to confront a child and harm that child.
She could have met that child on the street and chastised that child but she should never have touched the child.
The Law and the Minister of Education will handle this situation, hopefully as best as they possibly could.
The principal should talk to the children, advising them against calling names and bullying one another. It can be done. All it takes is disciplinary measures.
Principals/teachers in bygone years were able to do that effectively and with the strap to maintain order.

  9. February 5, 2015

I wonder if that child called “Ebola” told her parent what it said to the other child. This is a two way street, you call me by a name and I call you by a name. That’s settled. This parent, in my opinion, should have reported this incident to the school.

When a child has no respect for the parents, it has no respect for others also. This is a real issue with the youth of DA and the parents that don’t have control over their children for various reasons.

That teacher should be dismissed forthwith. We always come with that excuse “wel she /he have their reason” and maybe so but it is intolerable for a teacher especially to take the law in her own hands.

This is totally outrageous!! No adult should confront another person’s child – especially at a school!! This is outrageous and irresponsible. A Teacher at that!!! Are you kidding me?? I don’t care whether the Teacher is retired or is still teaching! What an abhorrent act. That Teacher, if currently employed as such should be summarily dismissed and then prosecuted for child abuse!!! I would expect a person with such credentials to act responsibly. I’m appalled.

Wait a minute! From the story I thought it was said that the child held the teacher/mother in a ‘lock-neck’, and I guess she unable to get out of it must have bitten the child. If that is the case well either that 11 yr old well strong (good for himself pap) and/or that lady feb (weak). Either way, that was very unprofessional of the lady. She should have sought to resolve the matter by bringing it to the relevant education authorities and/or give her child a similarly good/embarrasing response for the bully which would make him think twice again of trying to bully her child.

Is this article accurate an educator came on the property of another school and fight with a student? This is unacceptable especially coming from an educator. So what if the student called another student “Ebola”? The perpetrator should be placed on administrative leave effective immediately, and the commission of a full investigation by both the police and the Ministry. These investigations should be independent of each other and if warranted, that criminal charges should be brought against the perpetuator. This is pure nonsense and have no place on school property.

From a law enforcement standpoint, I can come up with at minimal three (3) charges resulting from this one incident. I am also concern that according to the article, there were other educators present so what did they do to come to the aid of the student?

Bullying needs to be addressed in a very firm way in our school system, too much is being ignored. Children must respect their elders and elders must lead by example. We all loose our minds at times, but we must remember what example we are showing.

u know thinker. you are so so right…and I think it goes even more beyond that….It goes right down to the way people in our society treat each other.. these bullying behaviors are learnt I think….there will always be healthy competition between children which is to be encouraged…but our children need examples of humility and gratitude, team spirit and good sportsmanship.. we have to start from the people…because if our children cannot identify positive role models in real life what can we really expect.. we have to become COMMUNITY again…

i think there is more to this story….this person,A TEACHER, could not have just acted so brazen just like that….to me…this seemed to have been the source of frustration for some time, and that was just the straw that broke the camels back….while I dont know what the complete story is….any right thinking person can put themselves in the situation…your child, flesh and blood from your womb, who is your sole divine duty to protect…and a resolution not being found for the teasing of a child… it comes down to one thing…RESPECT…and frankly some of these kids…I as a young person myself feel sorry for them. some of them are only doing what they learn at home…

The struggle is real with these kids. Parents telling you as the teacher they are fed up with the children. Like, what am I supposed to do for you…I feel sorry for the lady. It’s easy to lose you cool, and all those saying well she should have know better, think about it. If it were your child I’m just thankful that bullied children her don’t have the psyche of the American bullied child who will dispense of him/herself . Long ago we said sticks and stones may break my bones but words can do me no harm…really I bet every single one of us can remember an unkind thing said to us from childhood. I don’t completely blame the children..I blame the parents who have stopped parenting.and funny the same of people calling for the lady to lose her job…..funny how our minds work in this place…..funny!

It is not a teacher who went to school. She doesn’t work there. An irate parent who happens to be a teacher went to the school. See we have a tendency in this place and elsewhere to think teachers are not human. You hear things like a big teacher like that….nobody ever says a big politician though. She went there as a parent concerned for the safety of her child. Some parents know what they and to the schools. We see the fruits of it now with a teenaged girl missing ever so often. Parents have abdicate dither responsibility leaving everything for poor teachers to do at school. Imagine having to give child lectures every day. Imagine children doing malice to public property..and their parents say ..well is government own. Imagine children bullying each other and to them it’s of little or no consequence. Imagine a society who makes excuses for children’s behaviors and making excuses for their parents. Oh the parents need parenting. Parents ..it is time that you PARENT UP!!

As an adult you should control and contain yourself. If not you are in the wrong profession, all schools has challenging children and all children has different challenges, but that does not give a teacher/parent the right to take things in her own hands. if she did not confront the child directly the matter would have been handled professionally. Diplomacy should be excised by professionals at all times. If at this stage you as a teacher does not conform to the education rules, there are many questions left unanswered that needs exploring. Ask the Ministry of Education and the secondary school in the west coast why was the teacher transferred from one school to another? If every time we frustrated and feed up we will be tempted to take justice the wrong way. wrong is wrong, no two ways about it, the parent should have reported the matter to the school and the child parent.

Bullying in Dominica is rampant at all levels and in all areas of life and not taken seriously. It is seen as acceptable based upon who is being bullied and who the bully is.

The teacher or any adult can never be right in physically attacking a child, but as we know in DA mess with people children and all hell breaking loose. The culture is not serving us or our children and needs healing from the traumas of the past to enact change so we have better parenting that will lead to better families, communities and leadership.

Now that poor child has a nickname for life! Thanks to an ignorant mother. I believe in an eye for an eye. That mother should have given the daughter some good maypwee to give that other one. Let her older brother or sister deal with the bully.

Now for the one that got beaten I would also find an older brother, sister or cousin to go beat her down. The parents just have to stay on the side line and look on.

Now that being said: This culture of hitting is not going to solve anything. It is a cycle that will just keep turning if we do not come to a realization that the rod does not solve anything. It just makes matters worst. We need a serious shakedown on child abuse.

Food for thought: There is a thin line, very thin line between discipline and abuse.

If parents use to take time to talk to their kids, that 11 year old would know exactly what to do when she was called that name. My child learn to ignore people. All children troublesome, all children misbehave at school. I will not support my child teasing other children. The point is she could have spoken to the child parent or the class teacher to get the matter solve. Many incidents with children are solve at the principal office and a few days later the students reconcile. Children will alays misbehave to a certain extent. The point is the teacher is no good example to be a model teacher. she has done that in the previous school she taught, and is still bully people children at the secondary school. Can you trust that teacher, the student is ingrade six preparing for Grade Six Assessment and she threaten him if he comes to the Grammar……………tell me if this is right or this about no smoke without fire. We do not have all the facts as far as I can see, however some children are brought up by parents who don’t correct them and they go to school and feel they can bully other people’s children. The education system itself is not well equipped to deal with bully children and maybe this parent just did not have a choice.

Children need to be disciplined at schools in the way it used to be before.

That parents patience has probably reached it’s end. Having your child not wanting to go back to school because of constant taunting.

The schools and the ministry are not doing enough in regards to bullying in our educational institutions. The police say it’s a school matter, the school says that as long as it’s not a physical attack learn to deal with it. The bully themselves want to curse the parent and stick out their chest like they’re invulnerable.

All parents better check their children, because if your child is bullying other people’s children, remember, there’s more than one way to skin a cat.

  38. February 5, 2015

According to the above script ,there were witnesses when the teacher used physical force on another student who is also someone’s child…this teacher according to the law should be kicked out of the educational system, punished severely by the law ,to a maximum term imprisonment ,fined and compensate the victim”child” to the maximum, so that this will be used as a wake up call to every parent who chooses to hit another child for a simple teasing ,,,i’m sure that her child have teased other kids just like she,he or we did in our school days… children forgive and forget fast then become friends again…as for the teacher on-lookers ,they should have the responsibility to help protect kids on the school grounds.as for me if this child was my child ,no matter what the consequences would be i would take the law into my hands ,all hell would break loose…for my child ,don’t jump on low gates..this is not acceptable under any circumstances,,,keep that type of teacher far from…

It ok for the bully to continue to taunt, tease , molest and push to the boundary of suicide but when the parent figure that they have taken enough they are condemned. well it goes both ways when your ill mannered children decide it fair game to bully decent kids parents will step in and just like you say all hell will break loose because is not one set that can break loose and it is this very attitude you display why kids of persons like your figure they can bully the little ones if it was me i would pay some 14 year old to put a serious gang whooping on your kids and you and him would know how it feels to be a victim.

Don’t know the penalty but I would put that parent in jail. And we can all sit back and laugh. Or make her pay off a large sum of money to the child. What a shame to her own child who must be grossly embarrassed, and surely, this teacher will not be allowed to continue working. And now she has a nickname for life.

Maybe, however she should never have confronted the child. She should have gone to the principal instead! I think the law is very clear on this type of behavior! You as a parent can’t and should not confront or hit children!
