PM Skerrit vows gov’t will not tolerate crime and violence

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit has vowed that his government will not tolerate crime as the country faces a series of violent gun offenses.

In the month of August alone, four shootings have left three men dead and one nursing gunshot wounds in hospital.

Speaking at a function in Mahaut on Thursday, the Prime Minister made it clear his government will not condone what he described as “this lawlessness” in the society.

“I give you the assurance that this government will not allow and tolerate any such activities going on in Dominica, we will be firm and resolute in ensuring that we wipe out this lawlessness that is permeating our society,” the Prime Minister stated.

However, he pointed out it will require the role of every Dominican since “crime and violence are societal issues and therefore it requires the whole society playing its part in bringing a sense of peace and tranquility in our country.”

He also had a strong message for those who are involved in illegal drug activities.

“We must send a clear message to people who are involved in drugs,” he said. “You must cease and desist from engaging yourself in these illegal activities. Where there are drugs, there will be guns and where there are guns, there will be violence and killings.”

Skerrit said the police have been given the mandate to ensure that a sense of peace of mind is brought to every citizen of Dominica.

“The government is committed to this and we have provided all the resources, all the resources they require,” he stated. “They have it and as Minister of Finance, I am committed, once the chief says to me he needs this, I shall provide it to him to ensure that he has all of the resources required to carry out his mandate and that of the police in Dominica.”

These senseless violence need to stop. This is hurting the country all over the world. Tourism will come to a halt. Dominicans and other nationals are afraid to visit the Island. These politicians need to stop their political nonsense and start protecting the people.
    1. Have zero tolerance gun laws with a mandatory 20 years sentence for anyone caught with an illegal fire arm.
    2. Murder conviction equal the death penalty. ( Bring back the death penalty. )
    3. Shoot to kill criminals caught in the act of commiting senseless violent crimes.
    4. Custom enforcement, search and seizure, x ray equipments.
    5. Get these criminals off the streets.
    6. Build more prisons.
    7. Have convicted criminals serve their full sentences.
    8. Elect politicians who will protect and serve your interest.

Dominicans will continue to suffer from senseless violent crimes if there are no serious criminal laws and enforcements to protect them.

We can cry all we want about crime. Both those for and against the Government, but it was a crime against God before Governments. What is our role in raising our children? In our community? In peace making?
Dominica belongs to us all! Not the Prime minister!
We have become selfish, Greedy, violent, self centered, ugly in our ways, merciless……. why? why? It did not just begin over 14 years. It may have grown over those years but what have we been offered by our grandparents and parents? What have we passed on to our children?
Remember the knob was a norm? then the pants below the bot? the lifestyle of gangsters through television, music…the occult practices right in our doorsteps….
This is what happens over time to a nation who strays away from God!
we seek all answers from man and we are convinced that money will solve them!
How about our attitude, lifestyle, where are the fathers and mothers? Who is to be blamed?
May God have mercy on us.

People must not take comfort from Skerrit’s so called tuff talk about gun, lawlessness, police getting what they want to fight crime etc. Over the last 12 years his record will show that he doesn’t care a damn about fighting crimes. The man is only concerned about staying in power so he will not go after criminals because he is depending on such people to help him remain in office. I have no doubt that when this hypocrite refers to fighting violence and lawlessness and how he will give Carbon what he needs to do the work, the man is simply using the crisis at hand to talk his usual talk. I have no doubt that the man feels his political legacy is coming to an end and therefore expect him to do some crazy things that he knows will stir trouble and hence, he will push his little boy Carbon, to go after his political opponents in the name of fighting violence and lawlessness, just as we saw after the arrest of Monfared in Feb 2017, after a CARICUM trip in Guyana. Don’t be fooled people

I condemn these senseless acts and offer my condolences to the family of those left to mourn, may the good Lord sooth your pain and cradle you in his loving arms. I also feel for the families of those perpetrators as they have to live with the embarrassment and shame of kids they loved so dearly who turned into monsters. This period of monstrosities didn’t just happen out of the blue hut we ignored the signs and didn’t do enough to address it. One of the failures was not putting forward the financial and human resources needed in the most effective way. One glaring failure is with the thought that militarizing the police will instill fear in the populace and they will conform. Foolhardy! The police chief thinks his job is to do the bidding of the prime minister and the Labor party. He is a complete baffoon and a waste of time at securing the nation. Skerritt its not only what you say but what you do. Please, man, get a competent chief from outside Dominica to fix things.

We will not tolerate this thievery and poor governance of Skerrit and his band of worthless, corrupt inept 18 wasteful minister boom boom flies and ignorance and or denial of the laws of good governance.

There should be no charges for illegal gun users. Prison is one of the main solutions for these type of crimes. These ppl need to be taken off the streets for at least 20 long years. This should serve as a deterrent for others.
These ppl are charged n they are back on the streets doing the same things.
These charges are peanuts, like $10,000. So it means that a Dominican life is valued at about $10,000
So you the policy makers need to tighen the laws to protect the public.
You are squarely reponsible for the increase in criminal activities on the Island.
It is a shame that you guys went to study law but crime is on the increase. These ppl are unable bring solution to the situation.

Your crime fighting tools and approaches on the island are outdated. Thus, despite the political posturing, nothing will change and everything remains the same. The inability of your prosecutors to secure guilty verdicts against cold-blooded murders leads to revenge killings, hence violence begets violence.

Skerrit and the DLP have presided over the country’s affairs for the last eighteen consecutive years. If they cannot get it right during this lengthy period of time, why should anyone be optimistic about his new found epiphany?Truth be told, because Mr. Skerrit has made so many unfulfilled promises, uttered such copious lies, no one but his most diehard supporters believe him. All public institutions, organizations and agencies (police force, parliament, DPP Office, electoral system, etcetera) serve Mr. Skerrit instead of serving the people. Only the people, with their collective energy, efforts, determination can and will solve the crime problem but the PM and his submissive ‘soldiers’ continually engaged in political tribalism. This CANNOT be helpful. Mr. Skerrit is behind the wheel in a comatose state. He is driving the country over a precipice to its demise.

It’s a FACT that Alireza Monfared was a wanted fugive. IT’s a FACT that he was hiding in Dominica. It’s a FACT that he was holding our passport. It’s a FACT that he was seen several times in Dominica with our government officials and friends of the DLP. Mr Skerrit did you know Monfared was a wanted fugitive? Why did you not send your military to arrest him for questioning? It is a FACT that Prime Minister Skerrit told the nation that Alireza Monfared (a wanted fugitive} was a good man. A wanted criminal was described as a “good” man but good men with a very good reputation like Boston, Dr. Fontaine, Dr, Christian and others were arrested and made to be seen as criminals. So I don’t know who Skerrit is addressing here, especially with election coming and he knows Dominicans are upset with his failed policies which caused Ross to RUN, somehow when he talks about his police and fighting violence and lawlessness something is telling me it’s a message for his political opponents.

  16. Perfect Idiot
    August 31, 2018

Honestly speaking I don’t even know who the PM is addressing and who he is trying to reach with his message especially when he uses words like ‘violence’ and ‘lawlessness’. Go back to his state address after the Feb. 2017 peaceful meeting, you will see violence and lawlessness and next thing we know it was true patriots and good people, with no criminal record like Thomson, Boston, Dr. Christian, etc he sent his military force to arrest. In fact let’s not forget that the reason for the Febr 2017 peaceful meeting was after it became known that Alirez Monfared who was wanted by Interpol for his involvement in Iran’s biggest-ever corruption scandal, working alongside tycoon Babak Zanjani, was finally arrested and had a Dominican passport. But even worse when we got to know that he was hiding in DA for 6 months and, was seen several times driving with our leaders. Skerrit described him to us as a “Goodman”. Really PM? So it’s a fact that criminals are good and good men are…

Discontent is always visible, when power is vested to long within a group, the DLP and Mr Skerrit, may be entering the path of Vere Bird of Antigua and Eric Gairy of Grenada. Tuff talk is always followed by the heavy hand of long serving gov’ts, in most cases, high ranking gov’t, police and business personels, are the ones at the frontline of drug dealing, who pays the price? the foot soldiers, the mis-guided young men willing to partake in the poisoning of their own community. The hard chemical base Cocaine of the South American mainland, just like the rest of the Caribbean States, Dominica will pay her price, the drug CZARS will get rich and divest their earnings, while the murder rate among the vulnerable, will continue to escalate.

“Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit has vowed that his government will not tolerate crime as the country faces a series of violent gun offenses.”

    Corruption is also a crime!

If I use a gun to murder someone; or I snatched a bit of bread from someone and  eat it because I am hungry, that would also be a crime of felony!

If I am in high office let’s say in government, and I steal and lie I would also have committed a felony for which the penalty is time in jail. A crime of any kind is a crime!

Murder, lying, driving while inebriated, stealing: when a minister of government possesses assets such as Real Estate that their paid salary as a minister of government cannot substantiate, that too is a crime. Anything one does contrary to the law, are all crimes, some may be classified as misdemeanors, while other are felony’s.

My question to you Roosevelt  are you talking about all crimes or just murder?

    What about lies and stealing?

This is a problem created by the police,
Apply for a fire arm license, the feedback you get at CID is you want to commit a crime, and they deny you the license.
what has happen is everyone get their own tool illegally and protecting other people who have illegal tools because with firearms there will always be a need for consumables (Bullets). So the police need to free up the restrictions on obtaining a legal firearm and their problem will be solved.

It is said that the pen is stronger than the knife and for that very reason more suffering and death comes to any nation by way of corruption as compared to Violence.
So we condemn the senseless killings, Dominica is a beautiful country and certainly the people should be more tolerant and genuine with each other, but also curb the corruption in public office. In fact it can be said that violence rises for lack of Jobs due to poor planning and failed policies..So we have to deal with the systemic issues from which the crime and violence spurs and not only to take a hard stance on crime after it has already been done.

Good move Mr. PM you have my support on this one. No crime and violence in our land! Zero tolerance.

Good one Skerrit. Now that the place is falling apart, you will not tolerate crime and violence? What were you doing before the crime (murder) spree that we are now experiencing? Talk about closing the barn door after the horses bolt.

And you suggest crime should continue and nothing done? SMH

You must be worse than Skerrit to think I was even suggesting that. The point is we need to be proactive. We have all seen what is going in on in the region. What makes you think it would not happen in Dominica? That is the same type of thinking that got us all the looting that occurred after Hurricane Maria. There was no planning on the part of the authorities. Likewise, there was no planning on their part in the event we were struck by a hurricane. They are always reacting after the fact.

Skerrit, Go clean your backyard from state corruption and nepotism from your political crime and violence. Y9u have to account for the Bin Bobol and Ferlizer Bobol and we want a comprehensive accounting report of states funds re the Venezuela so called oil production. We also need to know of the CBI passport selling scam, where some Commonwealth countries, mainly Canada has imposed visa restriction on us because of your failed policy and insult to us Dominicans due to your imposter passport sales scheme.
Skerrit, you must go as you have failed our Domininca, belittled its name and you are a failed leader who lacks leadership and analytical skills. You are not the person to lead us Dominicans and Dominica out of poverty for what you and y0ur corrupt labour government and boom boom flies have crate , now twenty years on. Skerrit, your time is up, you have failed us , just Go and take your bunch of Boom Boom flies with you. Go
