The Portsmouth police have arrested a 23-year-old woman from Woodfordhill for allegedly stealing $372,029.33 from Archipelago Trading in the second town.
She has been identifed as Shirmiah Harper of Palm Tree, Woodfordhill, residing in Glanvillia.
The theft reportedly took place between June 30, 2011 and April 22, 2012.
She was employed at the business place as a cashier.
Harper is expected to appear in a St. Joseph court today (Thursday).
The police are appealing to members of the public to live within their means and respect other people’s property.

She has instructed the best lawyer in Dominica! Anyone listened to his comments in the past 24 hours after securing bail for his client at the High Court, it was a determined man. This legal system will not be the same. I saw mister with about 7 cases shuffling and prevailing on all, then walks up to the High Court and frees his client. Behanzin will make joke of the police case!!!He has already filed documents at the High Court, to the DPP and I would like to find out what criminal investigation was launched against the Investigating Officer??? can DNO try to find out and report it, this could be juicy!!!

This a sad situation where everyone has passed judgement on this young lady, who maybe does’nt even know where archipelago trading is, what type of business they operate, never met the young lady are more crooked than her and yet has so much to say about her. Not because you were not caught in the act or arrested for your crimes should you try to tarnish another’s reputation. Someone is innocent of their crimes until proven guilty in a court of law, beyond a reasonable doubt. Within eleven months a considerable amount of money has been missing as to how it was taken, when, is it an accounting error, yes we are humans we all make mistakes except if she has already implicated herself by saying I took $372,029.33 in eleven months. It is feasible yet hard to believe that this one individual could pull such a heist all by herself in eleven months.Did she just write out a check in her name for that substancial amount of money? Please have a conscience, think before you write don’t just write out or say everything that comes to your mind before thinking of the dire consequences it will have on someone else. The world is watching, the world is listening it’s not just Dominicans seeing all of that. when your turn comes and you are faced with the same dilemma whether the accusations are true or false do you want judgement to be passed on you without the truth being revealed? “For to be free is not to merely cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others”. I do not think this 23-year old took all this money ALONE. For the sum of money involved and for this to go on for so long – SOMEONE WITH ACCOUNTING EXPERIENCE is involved AND somewhere between she and the bank maybe had another thief OR TWO.

Sherm Harper is my family. While I am saddened by the accusation, I am proud to call her my cousin. Understand this is not an easy time for her family.

Our grandfather was know as Captain Marc, because he was that great fisherman who gave away fish for free to those who could not afford to pay for it. Amongst other things he thought me the values of hard work, perserverance and self-reliance, this is why he built his house with his own hands. My grandfather was a self-made man, we were tought to work for what we want.
Our grandmother thought me to love the Lord and obey his commandments, do unto others as we would like done unto us. In fact, at dinner time, she would always leave some food in the pot at night. She tought me to be to love everyone and fear God.
To than end, I submit to you that hard work, perseverance, self-reliance, charity, fear of God are the values, ideals and principles that were instilled by my grandparents, but in every family someone may deviate from those family values from time to time.
I believe that if one has the audacity to publish defamatory baseless comments, castigate or cast aspersions on a family name, then that individual should have the courage and spine to identify themselves and stand by those statements instead of being a coward hidding behind a computer screen.

it seems to me that the young woman is the one who started it all. Of course, she should have her day in court but you cannot accuse the public of tarning your family name. Your family member is the one responsible for this.

If she was only a cashier then how was she able to steal soo much money within such a period without being caught any sooner? Sounds like a lack of financial control mechanisms, if you ask me. Employers and Managers need to have a keen eye to observe when employers are leaving above their means especially when its material. There seems to be quite a bit of this going around. Employers needs to tighten their accounting systems. Hire experts to review your books and your systems independently. Many times these things can be avoided if the Employers spent a lil more to tighten up or even spend some time hanging around the business place. Even try to understand how certain processes work, see if it makes any sense. I smell more to come!!!

This is absolutely ridiculous. First of all, do these companies ever do spot checks on their employees? It is clear that these employees become comfortable knowing that nobody is watching them. Secondly, there must be severe punishment for people who steal for nothing. This is incredible. How can a cashier steal so much money in such a short space of time. This averages to about 31,002.44 monthly. What accounting system does this institution has. Cashiers are suppose to balance their cash every day and that cash should be verified by the supervisor. I think that when these things happen, its never one person involved

Thanks and i am even taking this a step further. The monthly figure works out to about 1409.20 if we work out an average of 22 working days not including saturdays. I am also thinking that their financial year just ended and this is the reason why they caught the “ERROR”. Where was the supervisor in all this and where was the supervisor’s supervisor. For a cashier to be able to swipe 1500 a day from her till is something quite serious. More so to be able to do that for just about a year is even worst.
Additionally what really bothers me is the fact that these people do nothing good with the monies that they steal and i guess the reason is they did not work hard for it so easy come easy go.
I really hope that we dont blame this on the economy because those of us who dont steal live in the same economy and we work hard and take our time to acquire what we want.

They are not investing in real accountants who can also conduct internal audits. I find it hard to believe that she alone did this. WHo is her supervisor? They too should be charged since they are the onces signing off on balances at the end of the day.
