Police charge ‘Gravity’ for death of Andy Carbon

The police have charged Patrickson Moses, also known as ‘Gravity,’ of Kingshill for the death of Anderson ‘Andy’ Carbon.

Carbon’s body was discovered on the sea defense wall at the Bay Front in Rosesau at around 4:00 am on Friday, June 23.

He was pronounced dead by a medical doctor and a coroner’s inquest was convened.

Police PRO, Inspector Pellam Jno Baptiste, said the police have completed their investigation into the matter and Moses was charged.

He appeared in court on Monday and is now on remand.

‘Gravity,’ a vagrant, is well known on the streets of Roseau.

If Gravity has been aggressive and he continuously threatened people in the past, he should have been forcibly arrested and mandated to treatment by a judge. Tools such as a “Mental Health Warrant,” would serve some of the more aggressive vagrants quite well. This would provide them with humane treatment and counseling plus psychotropic medication if deemed necessary. But then again, our society and wider culture has not evolved to identify and tackle such issues. If evidence disappears from the Evidence Locker Room at Police Headquarters, I do not expect such care and attention to be given to guys like Andy and Gravity.

Gravity has been in and out of Jail for at least the 10 years I was in DA. The stories he would tell me when I saw him bleeding and looking like he had been beaten badly, more than once mind you. Not sure if they are true as he wasn’t all there? He called me Jenny even though I told him a hundred times that wasn’t my name? One in particular was he had stolen a gas can and the police beat him badly and dropped him off at some remote location in the bush? Maybe hoping it would teach him a lesson? But if this is true it’s no wonder the vagrants get aggressive. They become like junk yard dogs because that is how they are treated. Please don’t take offense this is meant to be constructive criticism. Have a blessed day all. And forgive them for they know not what they do.

This situation has gone from bad to worse. It also represents a total break-down in our moral fiber as a nation. This issue, like proper garbage collection, is a glaring reflection on just how backward and dunce we are as a nation, while highlighting deep cultural flaws in the way that we live. We make fun of these people and treat them like animals, instead of providing treatment for them and a safe place to live. Our culture has not evolved to the point where we understand why some of these issues occur and what remedies should be implemented. While the bourgeoisie class drive to their homes in upper Goodwill, Canefield, Beverly Hills and other suburban enclaves on the island, the wider society has literally gone to the dogs.

I remember one time sitting in court and Gravity had a case. The man was telling the judge to hurry so he can be up Stockfarm in time for lunch.

so, this man is basically going to sit and do nothing and get fat on tax payers money.

    plain and simple

These types of people do not care. While in high school, prior to going to school one morning I overheard a woman say in patois/creole, if she was in prison she would have had breakfast already. She was walking on the street of Roseau near where we resided when she made that comment. She had a young child who would always be with her. Both were unkempt. I do not think she was such a bad person; probably a troublesome one who got herself in trouble from time to time. I often wonder if that woman is still alive and what happened to her daughter.
When in prison they get three meals. Their belly is full. On the contrary outside, they may be hungry and wanting a good meal.

The country need to help these people. Put them in the pink house. The prime minister should think of using the CBI money to build a facility to help these people. They are human beings. They are peoples children, relatives, old school mates. It seems we move on in life and forget the person awe played with when we were young. What a disappointing thing going on.

My heart hurt when I found out about Andy? Now it really breaks for Gravity. Both of these men have been abused and cast outside to fend for themselves worst than stray dogs. When people in our society end up like this we should take a long look in the mirror and ask ourselves ” could I have done something to help these less fortunate? When I lived in Dominica Gravity would carry all my bags to my bus stop when I was too weak to do it myself. Yes I paid him but he never stole from me and he was just as polite as anyone else in town. As for Andy shame on the people who made him do push-ups for a dollar! He was mentally ill not a clown for your entertainment. I am glad he is dead and I hope Gravity dies sooner than later. I am sure they will both go straight to heaven because their lives have been pure hell in Dominica. At least he will get food in prison? He may be just locked up to get another vagrant off the streets? God bless them.

@ C Fraser: You can sugar coat it all you want and play holier than thou, but the fact remains is in life we all make the choices that we end up with.

Both Gravity and Andy CHOSE to do drugs. Repeat: THEY CHOSE THAT LIFESTYLE!!

So coming and talk about they ‘have been abused and cast outside to fend for themselves worst than stray dogs’ is taking the sentiment a bit too far.

Remember the famous saying we were taught as children, “How you make your bed is so you lie down on it”

      • June 27, 2017

Wow. That’s not being “holier than thou”, that’s being compassionate to the least among us, even if they became so through their own poor choices.

They did drugs. Someone sought them out and gave it to them. They got hooked on it and they kept giving it to them which completely destroyed them, their brains.
I wonder, “What will Jesus say – WWJS?
Whoever gave them illegal drugs will be answerable to God. Whoever ill-treated them, especially Andy, what happened to him during life and prior to what Gravity did to him. will be answerable to God.
If Gravity is also a mental case, I assume that God will forgive him due to his mental incapacity.

Just as the President, Pm, leader of the opposition, ministers and Ps’s votes are equal to the poorest man in the streets; even so every man’s soul is vitally important to God! Who else wants your soul? Satan! Why? to attempt to destroy God’s creation of his likeness and image! Satan has nothing good planned for creation but a promise of turmoil and burning!
God, has so many plans that he went to prepare mansions for us. The bible says 1000 years for man is like 1 day for God! Think about it! a man hardly makes it to 80. Do the math! If i can live for ever after i have already lived here for 80 years then i have scored big time.
If i only live half day in God’s time here and still perish in eternity to come then i have lost big time! I cannot risk that opportunity!
While i am here i’d rather not partake in things which are contrary to God’s commandments which are written in the bible. Do you know that every chapter in the bible leads or follows Jesus? Hmmm
    I praise you…

There is a need to enact laws and policies to deal with vagrancy. The vagrants feel a sense of hopelessness, people think of them as mere menaces, families repudiate them and they are left to languish on the streets. On our daily routines, we pass these people on the road with indifference as if they are vapor. We, as a society, need to be more empathetic.

I have bought Gravity food on numerous occasions and have seen others do it at the market and more recently in the Old Market area close to the Soufriere busstop where he now frequents. No one is gonna bring Gravity into their home but trust me several persons have taken change and buy a soft drink and bread or a cocoa tea and bakes. Stop coming on DNO and generalise. Is it perhaps the availability of entitlements that let “Gravity” survive in Dominica as a vagrant so well-known as to have a signature nickname? The thing about entitlements is that they are yours regardless of misbehavior. He was able to exist in a bubble in which even murder was simply a new game. How caring of you to hope he gets a free lawyer (another entitlement). How caring of Ibo France to imagine “Gravity’s” despair rather than his free ride, and to call for “we as a society” to do even more. How caring of you to hope that Peter doesn’t pay Paul. In your perfect world, no one has to pay; there are benefits and never any costs. In this real one, someone always does pay.
