Police claim success in drug fight

The drugs go up in flames
The drugs go up in flames

The police here have said the destruction of over $22-million worth of drugs on Monday afternoon is an indicator of the efforts of law enforcement in combating the drug trade.

“That in itself is a true manifestation of the unrelenting  persistent and concerted effort of the law enforcement agency of course in collaboration with other agencies as we seek to combat the drug collaboratively and to minimize it’s impact in Dominica particularly on our youth,” police PRO, Assistant Superintendent Claude Weekes told members of the media who witnessed the destruction of the drugs.

“Can you imagine the volume of drugs here would give you an idea if the police had not been successful at recovering and creating a significant dent in the drug trade, what would happen to the youngsters?” he asked.

Head of the Drug Squad, Inspector John Carbon, agreed stating that the destruction of the drugs is evidence that the police is successful in the fight against illegal drugs.

“Over the years we have been successful in many operations, not all were successful but the majority of them were and today we are here destroying the drugs that have been confiscated,” he said, adding that the police will continue their efforts and urged the citizenry to stay drug free.

The destruction took place at the Police Training School in Morne Bruce.

It contained marijuana and cocaine which were seized by the police over a period of time spanning way back to 2012 and even later, according to Weekes.

    Leave marijuana alone, move on to eradicate hard drugs. You don’t have a marijuana problem in D’a you have a hard drugs problem. And it can get worse because meth hasn’t even get here yet,..or has it? Leave marijuana alone, move on and face reality. Persecution of marijuana is so old fashioned thinking, hope you all can snap out of it. Good luck.

    We fed up of that black cloud of poison hanging over us for too long. This level of disregard for public and environmental health by the police should be a serious cause for concern for the authorities. They say a healthy nation is a …. nation. Can the authorities look into the purchase of a high temperature incinerator (1000+oC) to have a more efficient burn without so much smoke. We can also look at a condensation system to avoid even the minute amounts of poisonous smoke getting into the atmosphere.

    Also, how do you expect to openly burn a huge pile or weed and coke? are you effing kidding me? Police are really dumb. what about people who live in Morne Bruce and environs? using this method you are more making people inhale and ingest the fumes which get you high from the two drugs combined. you spranging people in roseau and you dont even know. Police need a closed furnace not a open pile of burning drugs. People like the ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH UNIT need address this.

      @idk anymore,
      Though I understand your concern, for decades, the police have been destroying drugs by burning at Morne Bruce. How many incidents have you heard about or have been recorded as having occurred as a result of inhaling drug fumes? If anyone claims the fumes made them do it, it would have to occur just after and no such incident has ever occurred.

      This is why I do not believe this was the amount they burnt. Probably there were a few leaves of Marjuana and 3 ounces of cocaine but I refuse to believe that this quantity the claimed to destroy actually occurred. The police are allegedly accused of foul play in the death of Joshua Ettiene and it appears that they are playing monkey tricks. So the way I see it, this it is diversional tactics played but by a supposedly corrupt force. This is madness. Real madness.

    Meanwhile, the number of alcohol poisoning cases go unreported, cigarettes continue to grace the shelves of grocery stores and pharmaceutical pill which don’t cure illnesses are issued out by the dozens. I cannot wait til the next generation comes in and takes over this country. I think only then will we see fresh minds, thinking, ideas, philosophies, perspectives on everything. This closed minded approach to some things but preferential openness to others is whats keeping the country back. not talking about politricks, just that overall fear and ignorance/lack of knowledge from those who have never even smoked a joint, drawn the tea, ate a piece of cake or brownie, sipped some tincture or used the oil from this herb. Understand that marijuana doesnt make your crazy or lazy or foolish. It enhances these traits if you already have those characteristics. Alot of of our Lawyers, doctors, engineers, farmers, public servants an everyday working people who do contribute meaningfully to society do use it. thats why this 22 million dollar “success” has and will in no way affect weed smokers and users because the plant will always grow, and grow and grow. You cannot stop its use. You have never stopped it, nor will you ever. So keep your fake fight/war alive. best of luck. Maybe one day you will see the benefits apart from personal consumption. (paper, fabric, rope, medicinal, textiles). Like all other medicines and stimulants, it is not for everyone and there are side effects, but it can never kill as there are no cases of overdose. Keep that in mind.
