Police officers need to take better care of vehicles – Savarin

Government said it has spent in excess of $3.3 million in the last three years to repair police vehicles that were damaged by officers.

National Security Minister Charles Savarin made the announcement at the graduation ceremony of new police officers this week. He encouraged them to take better care of police vehicles.

“Government provided four additional vehicles to the police to augment the 29 allocated to them over the last three years. The government has sought to ensure that every police station and unit is equipped with a vehicle and to bring to an end the much complained about response from the police that they have no vehicle,” he said.

Savarin said police vehicles seem to get into accidents much too frequently and end up in the vehicle hospital at Morne Bruce “where they spend too much time convalescing before they can return to active duty”.

i thought since mr Blackmoore go that the police and the country did noy have a minster of national security. While i am concerned with the figure stated, as another person commented the figure must be broken down to show in what areas the money was spend.Because it would be unfair to the police to include cost arising from normal rear and tear and the purchasing or spares for servicing. what about the other departments under his command where the same situation exist why single out one department.Has the goverment ever thought of odering all their spares directly and store them in their stores which will result in lower cost instead of every time you need a break pad to run up and down to get a L.P.O to purchase it at one of the dealers at a cut neck price. And what about investing in the police garrage mechanics in terms of traning , equipping the garage with latest equipments and tools and extent the garage to include body works and spraying, i think all this will significantly reduce the cost and prolong the life of the police vehicles.

I spent more than 20 years in this and i know policemen. They are also jealous and haters of their own brothers but they love the sisters only for one thing. There is a lot more i can say. I was also well respected by the Commissioner of police just for my knowledge and the way i carried out my duties. Amennnnnnnnnnnn!

Mr Savarin, Mr PM, please do your job properly. For it is you who hires those incompetent, uneducated brainless, no commonsense, don’t care, corrupted low life as (POLICE OFFICERS). With the many officers that you now have and are still hiring more, why are there so many crimes on the island? the tourist industry as you very well know happens to be the main source of revenue in the island, why are they not better protected by those police officers of yours? why is there not more police officers in plain view whenever there is a cruise boat in harbor either Roseau or in Portsmouth? why is there not more police officers at every tourist attraction site when they are visiting? you know why your police officers are so incompetent and don’t care, it’s because there are no leaders in your police force. If they do not care about themselves, what makes you think that they are going to care about a vehicle that is not their own or anything else. Stop wasting the tax payers dollars on those losers that you call police officers.

      Devoted Dominican,
I am happy you got brains but I want you to recognize that the society from which I suspect you came, is the one producing those ‘no brainers’ that you claim are being hired. Coincidently, the politicians on the government side or rather the Cabinet of ministers are the ones hijacking the recruitment process, handpicking and sending those persons to be trained. The Government should however increase the fleet of police vehicles to reduce or eliminate this problem. The police always have to go around in a hurry because they cannot be out for too long otherwise somebody is going too say ‘they call the police so long and the police not coming’

Maybe you could think of this……..

This response is for the rest of you, who have no idea what you speak about and because of the fact that you have never stepped in the “police kitchen” to feel the heat, or walked a mile in the police shoes, I will allow you to make all your loose statements after-all you enjoy freedom of speach and you pay the taxes that pay our salaries including the salary of the Minister, then it would be fair to ask the Minsister to elaborate on the statement. There is no mention of the areas where these vehicles MUST go and the condition of the roads in these parts. There is no mention of the model of vehicles purchased for the police. There is no mention of the fact that when you have different drivers driving the same vehicle how that affecte that vehcicle. There is no mention of the parts that needed changing and the cost of spare parts. There is no mention of what exactly the repairs were and the cost. There is no information to indicate whether the vehicles collided or if the repairs had anything to do with Manaufacturing defects. There is no break down of the damages and everyone goes bullistics on the police. Thanks you all! We will continue to do our best not withstanding the few among us who have not lived up to your expectations.PEACE.

Can’t believe it.The policemen know it’s not their vehicle so they do what they want with it. Wicked souls. They know a cent would not come from their pockets so what u expect. Start deducting it from their big salaries and u’ll see the change. I just find that’s total nonsense..Gov’t can do better than that.

SHAMEFUL!!!!!!!What an absolute waste of tax payers and public money!!!!!!!! Those so called policemen, especially the men are nothing bit a laod of layabouts. All they do is drive around in those air condition vehicles looking for young girls to have their wicked ways with. My mother in her 80s lives a stone throw from a police station, called the police because she happened to lock her self out of the house and had no way to get back in. They said they would be there 10 mins; after having had no response after 2 hours, being very frail and not able to walk without aid, she slowly made her way to the station to see if they would help her; again they said they would be there in 10 mins. To cut a long story short, they never turned up for the whole day. A neighbour had to smash down the door to enable her to enter the house. What made it worse is that she also had her diabetic medication in the house which she needed to take to avert what could have been fatal to her.
So you telling me that the public should foot the bill for luxury vehicles that allow the police to lime the streets with and not having any concern or regard for the public. If i had my way they would all be on foot or use donkeys. That money would be better Spent on the Fire Service and the Ambulance.

Something is wrong here. 3.3 million dollars in the last three years to repair police vehicles. Just police vehicles. That’s 1.1 million a year. Why? How many vehicles? What’s the extent of the damage?Something just does not add up here. If a new vehicle costs $100,000, that’s 11 new vehicles a year. What does it cost to repair vehicles from other departments? The fire service, the hospital. What’s the overall repair budget? $1.1 million a year, what a waste!

Anyone ever heard of insurance? Are any monies recovered from insurance??? I cannot believe the $3M would be the deductible costs. Assuming insurance is possible, cost benefit analysis will show that it would be justified to include this in operational budgets! This is a no-brainer.

Generally government gloats over new capital works or equipment expenditure and very little thought is paid to maintenance consequences and operational measures, for smooth running: be it a new road, school, hospital, vehicles. The policemen possibly are not taking the best care, but seriously, everywhere, police vehicles are at a high risk for damage. If you really think about it, police vehicles in every country get the most sever duty. It could be even worst if the patrols were more active and if they had to be chasing vehicles etc.

The things to focus on would be proper specs for the vehicles, effective maintenance and a very responsive system with repair protocols (including quick turn around time) and training/awareness workshops for officials. Also, even while applauding the govt for the much overdue vehicles, government should not stop with just a vehicle for each police station. There should also be a vehicle pool to deal with emergencies of vehicle shortages such as accidents or downtime for non-accident vehicle outages. Mr Minister also needs to understand that the protocol for dealing with equipment related to emergencies/public safety (ambulances, fire equipment, police equipment) should be dealt with more appropriately Regardless of who the fault is there should be faster repair turn around time, just by virtue of the criticality of this equipment (same applies to other safety equipment). Better care can be taken it is true, but all too often effective operational systems are not thought of or proposed as well We may not have the means to effect all these things all at once but they must be given serious thought than carrying on with the same old business as usual!

Thank you Mr. Savarin. They always have the Police vehicles dropping their wives children and girlfriends everywhere and they know its wrong so they must speed and most times they are under the influence of something or transporting some banana plants or some rabbit or dog food..
This does not only happen in the Police force but in all govt. departnents.Until we have workers leave govt. vwhicles on Govt. compound and use their private cars before and after their official duties, you will be spending another 5 mil. Greetings X-Police in New York, thanks for your contribution. You have really provided us with an answer to the so called problem that the Minister was quick to lay on the shoulders of the police drivrers, convenient scapegoats.I wonder what your contribution was to the Force during your eyars among us mr brother? I wonder, where did you serve, were you a driver, are you aqauinted or and knowledgable eith vehicles, especially the models purchased for such hard work? I can go on asking you questions but I doubt you will eb able to asnwer one much less the other dozen I have decided to hold back. Every policde driver needs to be exposed to Defensive Training Courses. There are some members/ drivers who are untrainable and so they need to be removed from the list of authorized drivers. There are amendments needed in the Insurance coverage to allow for every police officer with a valid drivers license to be an authorized police driver. Most importantly the government MUST pay the Drivers License pf Police Drivers and extremely importantly, GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO PROVIDE INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR POLICE DRIVERS!! Now my brother, you should not allow yourslef to get so hasty with words against your police family without the facts. The Minister owe police drivers an apology for making such a blanket statement and blaming police men for the cost of repairs to police vehicles, without giving a clue what the damages were. The Minister had to conduct an Audit before making such a statement but again its ok, just blame the police. I am proud to be a member of this organisation and your comments have proven one thing, you were never one of us, you just came for the money bro, cause if your heart was there and you understood how things work in this organization you would not have made such an ignorant and ill informed contribution. Love anyways. Me? I am in my twenty third year of service just in case you were wondering my brother??

That just shows how wasteful you people are but yet still when u call the police the same vehicle is always out doing personal errands and going on dates and all that on the state. I have seen police officers speeding just because they feel they can but should that speeding be in emergency situations only but they never drive and abuse their own vehicles in that way though

@no name: Typical media brainwashing, you will not comment on the western influence to destroy islam so they are creating disputes all over. Palestine, a western problem, a British problem, Sudan, Bosnia, Kashmir, 98% of these problems when you examine the historical accounts reveals it’s a western problem. The muslim world is frustrated with western interference in their affairs so they are lashing back. Do you think 9/11 occured in a vaccuum? You’ve got to be joking! Do you think that 19 hijackers got up one day and did this? Some of the pentagon was destroyed, how comes the U.S government fail to release the tapes that surrounded the rest of the pentagon? Something’s cooking, I smell what it is, do you? There is a war to destroy Islam and the muslim has a fundamental right to defend Islam! How many muslims were killed in these two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? How many prisoners were abused, raped etc in Abu Grayb? How about the account of the 14 yr old girl raped and burnt alive she and her family in Iraq? The list goes on and on. Don’t be fooled by the media that taliban are these evil villians and they are destroying their own people etc etc. The Taliban bought peace and stability to Afghanistan, reduced the exportation of heroine etc. During the Taliban one could freely walk the streets, homes were safe, no robbery etc, now Afghanistan is a nightmare! Sadam Hussein was an evil dictator, who put him there? The CIA, they love those dictators all that to destroy Islam and to use those puppets for oil and riches. Some of you people simply need to be informed a little more. Islam is the only comprehensive way of life that can really remove many of the ills our society suffers today.

I have books and relevant articles about how the Muslims persecuted the Catholics and other Christians in ancient days. To this day, this is done as in recent days/months, in African countries and as also broadcasted through the general Media that Catholic Christians of all in Iraq and Afghanistan who were at Church, worshipping God were murdered.
Christians are the most persecuted and peaceful people on this earth. Do you want to wage a war in the US and in Dominica of all? Therefore, please keep your Islam and all other such negative comments out of this column. They are unsuitable for this column. We could do without them. Thank you!

Matthew 11:27 – All things have been handed over to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him.
