Police report success in crime fighting

Police Commissioner Carrette

The Dominica police are reporting improvement in the handling of complaints from members of the public.

“We have seen slight improvement in the successes and response time to complaints,” Police Commissioner Cyril Carrette told reporters while listing what he described as recent successes.

They include the arrests of five suspects in the Muslim store burglary, and two arrests in connection with the shooting death of one man at an entertainment spot at Castle Comfort.

The individuals charged in these cases have already appeared in court.

Commissioner Carrette also disclosed that during the period December 2011 to June 2012 the police had been able to recover “seven weapons and 88 rounds of ammunition”.

“I must also state that a number of matters that have not been resolved are robustly being pursued,” he told a news conference called by the commissioner to give an update on police activities.

According to Carrette, the force’s Maritime Unit has enjoyed some recent success at sea, having “responded to several calls for rescue, including the recent report of an alleged plane crash in the Salibia area which was later proven to be false”.

He also spoke of “tremendous successes in maritime operations at sea, having seized three open-keel boats valued at about EC$210,000.00 (as well as) 79 rounds of ammunition, and large sums of money totaling $335,260.00 for the year 2012”.

The Commissioner spoke too, of general police activities during which “hundreds of offensive weapons including knives, scissors and batons” were seized.

He gave too, Drug Unit updates, citing initiatives which hauled in  43,318 cannabis trees, 787,327 grams of marijuana weed, 5.102 grams of cannabis seeds, 9.5 grams of hashish, 1,119.7 grams of cocaine and five weapons.

Efforts to better manage the flow of traffic in the city of Roseau were also highlighted.

And Commissioner Carrette indicated that ongoing training of police officers was a priority.

“At the moment we have police officers in Barbados, China and the United States of America undergoing training,” he disclosed.

On the question of police stations the commissioner said that Grandbay police expected to relocate soon to their brand new and modernized facility.

“A new police station costing approximately $3.2 million is nearing completion,” he confirmed.

The commissioner added that the Marigot Police Station was refurbished at a cost of $260,000.00, and that preparations are ongoing for the construction of new police stations in Calibishie and La Plaine.

Fellow Dominicans be happy at the success of the Police Force. You should know that it is because of your effort, your concerns and constructive criticisms that this could be achieved. Give yourself a pat on the back. Keep up the good work.
The Police Force needs your help, as concerned citizens and you need the Police Force, all co-operating. Be kind to them for in this age their work is no easy task. You should know what I mean.
May the good works of everyone continue to rid Dominica of those evil elements. It will take time. Keep praying and working towards this important cause. God is listening and taking note. God bless you!

Continue the good job despite the challenges. The Dominica police force is second to none taking into consideration the limited Resources and Inadequate human power not to mention available funds. To be fair the Government is ensuring that our officers are trained to deal with the ever changing trend of crime fighting and other Law enforcement areas. There is always room for improvement in all aspect of life and its human nature regardless of what one does some amongst us will never be satisfied and some will always have their own agenda to destroy the very thing set in place to improve our quality of life. It is what it is”. But life continues, is pass we all passing. It was noted recently that despite efforts to informed the public of the police hot line to report crimes and suspicious activities some persons claim they were not aware of the existance of the said hot line, that as it stand. I am suggesting that the police force request from Governmenta portion from the spoils {ie }the monies seized from crime to purchase at least two vehicles one for the Northern and one to serve the Southern districts, for the sole purpose of advertizing and canvasing with loud speakers attached making the public more aware of that police hot line that in addition to what is being done via social media and the radio. Last but not least bill board should be erected all over to further publicize that hot line number. little by little we have to take back our street from the very few amongst us who seek to destroy our good name it must be understood we only have a para military force in Dominica therefore we must and should support our Law enforcement officers, after all they are part of our family and human like the rest of us. Much more to add but in future post. For the negative ones amongst us keep faith with what we have and at the same time imagine what would happen if we did not have Law and order in our Country, therefor always seek to uplift your country for no one else will do it for us. “I am Dominican. Are You.?????

Dont give that you know very well that it was the PM that said and I quote ‘NO LAW NOT EVEN THE CONSTITUTION CAN STOP ME” then we see crime keep going up but the important crimes are still not resolved so when a little cocaine crime is resolved is’t just from the bottom of the heap we need Mr.Emannuel and his wife case to be resolved also the other police officer who’s house was fire bump

Hi, This sound like all good news from the Police Commissioner but was the media present and did they asked him any questions. Please Mr Carrette why don’t you release the numbers for the first six months of 2011 so we can compare it with the numbers for the same time period in 2012. That way we can tell if the Police Department made any progress in reducing crime. I have participated in many Comstat presentations with NYPD and I know how it works. I have one more question Mr Carrette, Who is the high ranking member of the Police Department that is responsible for Roseau. Did you hold that Supervisor responsible for the violent crimes committed in Roseau, EG; Shootings, Homicides and Assaults.

      • awa wi
        June 15, 2012

no its people like you who don’t advocate your rights and lose them. one of the easiest ways to take your rights away is to claim crisis so that you feel fear and then its suddenly ok for things that you would not tolerate to happen with your consent. now you may not realize it but this lends itself to discrimination since profiling will happen(u will be searched because you look a certain way) how would you feel as a law abiding citizen going about your business to be stopped and searched. i think that it is dehumanizing to say the least. then again maybe allyu like man to feel allyu up so…

      June 14, 2012

      @ awa wi

I often wonder whose side are people as you on when you make such a statement. Today, I read in an ethnic Toronto newspapers that the T & T Police with the instructions and approval of the government have been conducting random searches in an area where there are many murders and gang-related, illegal drug trafficking. To date, they have arrested many people and ceased guns and illegal drugs. This is necessary to curb the tide of murders and such other illegal activities. Thank God that this is done. It is imperative that people of a country live in peace and security and not in fear of criminals/ murderers. If you have nothing to worry about, it should not bother you. You should be happy about it for obvious reasons. Be a law-abiding national.

    • Shameless
      June 14, 2012

If you have nothing to hide no need to worry. The police only search those who they have reasons to behave is acting suspeciously so maybe you ned to spruce yourself and avoid known bad company.

  17. June 14, 2012

Carrette said that he seized approximately $335,000 during police raids, good job. I hope some of that money will be used to hire a foreign experience investigator to bring closure to the G.O.N. Emanuel case. You have more then sufficient money to go hunt for Sico Seco and bring him home.

Dominica police is the most efficient and best equipped police in the whole wide world. They always get their man in quick time. They have the best public relations and they treat their captives very well.

In Dominica police force people are always promoted based on competence and their is no political interference or nepotism herein.

All the other Caribbean police organizations used Dominica as their benchmark for progrss, and their officers all want to transfer to Dominica.
