Quick-thinking Bello driver foils robbery

A quick-thinking Bello driver has foiled an armed robbery at Grand Bay in broad daylight.

The incident occurred last Wednesday between 9:00 and 11:00 am, Managing Director of P.W. Bellot & Co Michael Fagan told Dominica News Online.

According to Fagan, the driver and a salesperson were doing deliveries in La Lay when they were approached by a masked man armed with a gun.

The man signaled the driver to stop.

The driver acted as if he was going to obey the command but instead picked up speed knocking the masked man to the ground.

He then drove to the police station where a report was made.

Fagan said although his two employees were not physically injured, they have been severely traumatized by the incident.

“It shook them up,” he said. “The salesperson was sent to the hospital by the police.”

Fagan said although he was traveling overseas when the incident occurred he was so shaken up he missed his flight.

He said all deliveries to Grand Bay have been put on hold until further notice. “I am disappointed because we have not been serving that area in over six months,” he said.

That driver is a stupid and he risk the life of his fellow employee for “pepper money” that not even his. The logical think to do would have stopped and give the man the money. Why would i trust a man with a gun to not to shoot me for money that he came to rob me? And de man well Kagoolay with his mask..He try to be a hero and put the girl life at risk..it could have been worse is all i am saying.

      Dr. BIRDIER:

What bothers me and also puzzles me is, how were they able to avoid Dominican immigration and also hide the guns and masks when they landed. These are questionable, illegal and dangerous items which should not be transported overseas be it by air or land and without a permit especially the guns. Those are prohibited items which should have been confiscated at the port of landing. Someone must have assisted them or did they travel by boat and landed in an area that they could not be seen as some do when they are transporting illegal drugs.

    Hope police catch him.
However, this unfortunate deed didn’t happen in Lalay, people in Lalay were not even aware of the incident as many were told about it from relatives abroad who read it on DNO (thanks DNO you prompt).

The story erroneously reads they were “doing deliveries in La Lay”, but actually they were way up the mountain in Montine area at the time. People would have seen the robber if it happened in Lalay broad daylight like that.

ADMIN: We stand by our story since it was told to us by the Managing Director himself. A small crowd was actually gathering as the incident was beginning to unfold right in La Lay.

When I considered how safe Dominica was. People would walk for miles and even alone and no one would consider harming others. Deliveries were made with no criminal obstruction, theft and injuries. There were petty thieves and not major ones. They were not armed; did not wear masks and carry guns to use on others. People could wore their jewellery without it being snatched from them. Purses were not snatched. Day and night doors and windows were left unlocked and opened and no one would consider trespassing and stealing. We walked the streets, even in the evening with no fear, talking and laughing as we did.
Business owners and tourists were not attacked, their belongings were not stolen and none were murdered. The more I think of this, the sadder I become.
The situation today is grim. Law abiding nationals have a reason to ask, what has happened to sweet, peaceful and safe Dominica? What has happened to some people, especially the younger ones? It is enough to make us wail and cry and call out to God for immediate vengeance.
Criminals are bold, heartless and care not about anyone but themselves, what they can steal by whatever means and whatever it takes to get it.
Due to these evil activities, drivers and others will have to arm themselves. They should carry an alarm and pepper spray. They should ensure that the pepper spray is used properly if they have to.
I am not endorsing carrying a gun or any other weapon. I leave this up to the Police department to decide this, if they ever do.
You must consider that criminals are under the yoke of Satan. He influences them, encourages them and turn their once, young loving hearts into stone. Their hearts belong to Satan otherwise they would not harm anyone in any way, specifically when it is premeditated.
We have recourse to God, our heavenly hope and protector. As it is stated, “He is only a prayer away.” Pray to Him for protection and may God protect you, each one of us.

The Prayer to St. Michael is an excellent one:

St. Michael the Archangel defend us in the day of battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray, and do Thou O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen!

Here is another one to pray upon rising and throughout the day:

    Prayer to Our Guardian Angel

Angel of God My guardian dear
To Whom His love commits me here
Ever this day/night be at my side
To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen!

For Catholics: “Say 7 Glory Be’s to your guardian angel when you pray it upon rising.

May God be with all of you/us.
May He drive the devil and his followers far from you/us.
God is our refuge and our strength, a present help in time of need. God bless you!

The criminals in this country seem to have a free arm and will to do as they please because it appears that law enforcement is impotent. I say so because there has been a series of robberies at the same location THAT IS the beach at Woodfordhill for the past few weeks using the same methods – hold up tourist or users of the beach steal their valuables including the rent a car to facilitate another crime somewhere else and to date we have not seen or heard of an increase in police patrols in the area or under cover work in the area; no road blocks and the random search of vehicles – no public notice or information. Case in point before when an arm robber or bandits flee a sense – the police would come over the media to advise the public on the situation and would warn that the men fitting description so and so are are armed and dangerous – or solicit the help of the citizens by urging persons that if should see men dressed in so and so — or acting suspiciously please call the nearest police station – something of the sort instead all we hear and apparently the police are very satisfied with that strategy is to high behind a PRO who says the matter is under investigation; under investigation how, where , when. Second example Mano fire bombing no progress no attempt to solve the crime yet still the matter is under investigation. This is becoming pathetic- that Marigot credit union robbery happened in daylight – the guys ran into the back area into the village – the police should have establihed a cordon or check points both vehicle and pedestrian including but not limited to Governor Estate- Back of Wesley to syndicate and to Hatton Garden junction all the way down to Belles – anyone emerging from the bushes should be questioned – interrogated especially if that person does not have any form of farming appareal or tools while another group of police officer comb the village; instead they stayed in the village going up and down wasting time. THEY THE POLICE ARE JUST NOT PROACTIVE IN THEIR OPERATIONS AND So voila the criminals ALWAYS HAVE A FEELING THAT THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH BROAD DAY LIGHT ROBBERIES AND CRIME BECAUSE THE POLICE WILL ALSO BE RESPONSING TO RATHER THAN STRATEGIZING AGAINST CRIME OR DOING WHAT THEY DO BEST SEATING IN THEIR OFFICES INVESTIGATING.

    @ pat

no i did not back track…i read and understood properly and imagined the situation.. he( the robber could not have been in the middle of the road like some said or he would have been badly injured or if he was he probably ran to the side in time….but what if he started shooting as he was running….it could only take one of those bullets to hit either one of those employees in the head

maybe he was on the side of the road when he tried to stop the vehicle….then the driver would have to turn a little to hit him( the robber)..

anyways i am happy that the driver saw an opportunity and took advantage…maybe the robber was an armature thank God…or maybe the robber had a heart and did not want to shoot…he just wanted the money…

what if he was startled and just started shooting automatically…what if he was heartless and just decided to shoot because the driver kept on comming….

so there you go pat…you needed to be spoon fed….are you satisfied now?

Tiny “if” is an illusive word because IF the driver had not gone to Gandbay that would not have happened. And IF the driver did not make good his escape as he did who knows after the robber takes the spoils IF he would not have wasted the guys – shot them; A REMINDER of the recent case in Antigua Gas station robbery; and IF the robber and if the driver and if this and if that – j
I figure IF we all come together to fight the increase state of holiganism that is taking over our country we would be better of. But If WE CONTINUE IF ING – things will never change.

It immensely bothers me what some evil people in DA have resorted to. Something has to be done to prevent those bandits from stealing from and harming innocent Dominicans who are performing their duties.
You thieves, get a life! Seek worthwhile and legal employment and cease causing problems and placing hardship on innocent people who, themselves are making a decent, legal living for themselves and their family.
Obviously, you do not love your country and its nationals otherwise you would never harm them in any manner.

It is sad that Dominicans are either to afraid or to blind to deal with the root of the problem. For convenience some people would rather say well crime is everywhere however the fact is while crime is truly everywhere we have never seen that level of crime when not until the Dominican people have been turned into beggars and dependents. Until we accept the reality of the situation we will continue to see crime escalating. It is conventional wisdom that crime rises with poverty and it is no secrete nor can sugar coaters hide the real situation. People are desperate , no jobs, no money, truly the recipe for crime. We can spi it , paint it , sugar coat it but like a boomerang the problem comes back to the lack of opportunities for young people- the people committing the crime.
While some will say – the perpetrators are the ones going to Guadeloupe and St Martin via back door etc- the question is why do these young people have to take such route? The people responsible for the disenfranchisement of the youth are the ones well protected. In other words they don’t give a damn. We want to restore pride to a nation by building a 27 million dollar building where the people are not employed and the very same unemployed Dominicans must foot the bill ( 10 Dominicans – are you kidding me).

I am not playing politics here , I am calling it as I see it. I wont condone crime of any nature but I am old enough to understand the dynamics between Desperation and reaction particularly in this time where there is so much more “ want “ than need – cell phone top up; the want of Kentucky Fry, subway, jamaican Patty, all instead of our locally grown foods.

I could go on and on but my only wish is that the people who are charged with responsibility to guide this country and making a better life for the people must step down from their high horses and do the right thing even if it giving way to someone else who is capable and willing to do the job.

The drivers need Police escort. There may not be enough police to do so and they may not be able to afford the cost.
Somehow I feel that this may be an inside job; that someone may have notified him about it. How could that bandit as I term him (it is obviously a him and not a her) be out on the street, masked and ready to pounce, steal and may have harmed them? He may have seen the vehicle approaching and from a distance.

Oh please Tiny! What is wrong with you? Tiny, with this type of thinking you need to have your head examined. You are way off your rocker and fairness.
How could he have endangered his life and his passenger’s life? He did some quick thinking to avoid endangering their lives. Fortunate for them the bandit was not able to harm them. It is too bad the masked bandit was not injured to the point he would require medical care and hospitalization and to be arrested.
People must keep alert and protect themselves at all times since the Police cannot be everywhere.

whatever happened as a result of the incident would be a clear case of self defense. the driver if he had crushed the thief would have no fear because the thief would certainly be lying there in mask and gun and this is enough evidence to show the police and everyone else that the man was a “sacwey voleh sah hut” and was self defense and protection.

Who really is “tiny”??? this “tiny” person constantly keep making outrageous negative comments that is very upsetting. Is this “tiny” person really know how much negative impact his/her statements is making on the image of Dominica? In all news, “tiny seems to always place his/her negative mark for the world to see. I say “tiny” sound like a youth needing serious attention. Another reason why we need a therapist in each school to provide “serious” counseling to our youths to help “change” the way they think and process their reality. We cannot have more like “tiny” around.
