Mervin Charles, a well known repeat offender, has been sentenced to 12 months in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of theft and another of malicious damage.
It is reported that in the wee hours of January 29, 2013 Charles entered the business place of Minya’s 7-11 in Pottersville and stole 20 bottles of Appleton rum valued at $288.
In the process, a wall and gate was damaged to the value $1,000 and $4,000 respectively.
Charles admitted to stealing the items but said he sold them to a man “from the country” for $80.
When he appeared in court Charles said was going through a “trend” in his life.
“I got awaken when I went through rehab for drugs and was doing well for the past two years but bad company led me astray and I went back into drugs and here I am again. I am sorry for my actions and did express remorse to the proprietors of the place for my actions,” he said.
But while Magistrate Candia George viewed his comments as “seemingly genuine” she stated that the onus was him (Charles) to ensure that he walked the “straight and narrow path of the law.”
“You have to do what is right, you need to take hold of your life,” she told him.
Also sharing thoughts on the matter was police Inspector Claude Weekes who told the court that he knew Charles since the days he (Weekes) was a police detective.
Charles, the court was told, was a resident of the Grotto Home where he was doing very well but strayed and gone back to his ‘bad ways.’
“He needs to have the will power … he has a craving and addiction and now need to consider what he wants in life,” Weekes told the court.
Charles was sentenced to 3 months in jail for theft and 9 months for malicious damage.
The sentences are to run consecutively.
Habitual offender? He cannot help himself? He needs Our Lord Jesus Christ in his life. He must worship God and pray to him. If he does not know how to do this, especially pray, he must be taught. Those who know him should help him. Can he read? If not, teach him to read. Give him a Holy Bible. It looks like he should be given religious instructions. If he is a Catholic, give him a Rosary and teach him how to pray it.
While this man needs to be rehabilitated, it appears that he is weak of spirit. He needs The Lord. Do something for him. He is an adult and cannot always be followed and monitored in public. He should stay away from bad company. I hope when he is released he will do better but he will need a lot of help both mortally and spiritually. May he be helped. May God help him.
We have to pray for them, this is a clear case where a REHAB center would be the perfect place for this individual to be treated for his problems. Until that happens we are going to have many more like him. OMG!SMH! To those who say legalize it??/ whatever drugs he was talking about. We kept droping the ball and kicking the can down the road to no return.
Good for him that man never took care of my brother
If he is a repeat offender, why can’t I see a photo of him? I need to know what this man looks like in case I see him loitering around my home and my business.
I BACK THAT UP 100%. WE NEED THE CHURCHS INVOLVED IN THE PRISONS MORE. REAL DEAL.
Mrs. Magistrate as a believer you know that it is only through Jesus Christ that these young men will change. What is the Church doing to assist those like him who need help?
Prison only makes them more hardened criminals, exposed to more ills.
yes but at the same time he broke the law …. and the law has to take its course
