River Bank resident says he will never smoke marijuana again

A habitual smoker, who claimed that his family brought him up that way, promised Magistrate Ossie Lewis that he would never smoke again.

“I wouldn’t do that again. I promise … I’ll never touch it [cannabis] again sir,” Kevin Anselm of River Bank told the court on Friday after pleading guilty to possession of cannabis.

However, the magistrate was not convinced.

“I’ll give you three days. I’m not even giving you three, I’ll give you two,” he told the 28-year-old man before imposing a fine of $300.

Anselm’s excuse was that he was raised by his family to smoke weed. “All I wanted to say is so I raise … my family and dem raise me so smoking weed… I didn’t take all my schooling,” he claimed.

Magistrate Lewis chastised Anselm, advising him to do his duties as a mechanic without taking any drugs. Anselm said the drugs made him meditate better during work.

Anselm was caught with a cannabis cigarette on Bay Front last Thursday night at about 7:30 p.m.

While sitting near the Top Shottaz Bar, he was approached by Constable Mitchel. Anselm closed the cigarette in his hand; however, during a search, the police constable discovered the lighted cigarette.

“See what I do myself there,” Anselm stated following his arrest.

A test later confirmed that the confiscated item was indeed cannabis.

Lewis considered Anselm’s guilty plea and the fact that he was a first-time offender. He was ordered to pay a $300 fine by March 31 or face one month imprisonment. Magistrate Lewis warned Anselm that he should not appear before him again.

“As I was sitting at the back, my mind tell me is that you going to charge me. I was saying is $300, $500 about that,” Anselm remarked following his sentence.

“Your mind never tell you is $3,000?” the magistrate replied.

This is stupid and a waste of police time. The Police cant convict the spanish for transporting hard drugs but they want to arrest a man for one marijuana stick. They need to find something more important to do, like finding the escaped murderer.

I think that dominica should look at all the facts about different drugs and see that putting a guy in prison for a joint is ridiculous. These cops must have nothing better to do with their time.We don’t need to necessarily legalize it but it should not be given such emphasis.Marijuana is not the worse thing that dominicans have to contend with; try ignorance!!!!!!!!!!!!!
