Roseau man accused of deception granted bail

A 40-year-old Roseau man is now on a $25,000 bail bond with one surety after allegedly obtaining $35,000 through deception.

Prisma Joseph, an employee of the Solid Waste Management Corporation, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste Thursday morning, was not required to plea to his charge, since it is an indictable offence which will be heard before a judge and jury at the High Court following a preliminary inquiry.

According to the charge, Joseph dishonestly obtained the money from Felita Thomas between November 31, 2009 and March 3, 2010 with the intention of depriving her of the money.

Some of the conditions of Joseph’s bail are that he reports to the Roseau Police Station every Mondays and not commit any offense while he is on bail. He is also to appear at a Roseau Magistrate’s Court on August 30, 2010 for the start of his preliminary inquiry.

Magistrate Baptiste ordered that disclosure on the matter should be on or before June 30, 2010.

Joseph was represented by Attorney-at-Law Peter Alleyne. Chief Prosecutor and Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Claude Weekes represented the prosecution.
