Son arrested in neglect death of mother

A man who was wanted by law enforcement authorities in the US for the neglect death of his mother has turned himself in and was arrested by the police.

Media reports indicate that Osmond Ignatius Winston was booked last week into Hillsborough County Jail on one charge of aggravated manslaughter in the death of his mother, who was originally from Dominica.

He is the fourth member of the family who was arrested  and charged in what authorities called one of the worst cases of elderly neglect ever reported in the Tampa, Florida area.

Mary Hildreth Winston died in October 2012 and according to officials she was confined to the bed for three years with rheumatoid arthritis, and her bed sores were so severe that her rib cage was exposed.

Maggots were found inside and outside her body, and her legs had fused together.

The neglect was so bad that authorities ruled her death a homicide.

Last month her husband Montgomery Winston, 68, and daughters Belinda and Hyacinth were arrested on manslaughter charges.

Mary Winston, originally from Roseau, worked as a nurse in Dominica before migrating to the US.

I knew the family very well because I taught Cynthie at the St.Martin’s primary school when her class teacher was sick. Her mom had always put her children first before herself. Her husband Monty used to work at the Esso gas station near the bridge at potters ville and the mother Hildred was a nurse at the clinic in Roseau. The family used to live in their home at Madrelle,in Loubriere before leaving to go to the States. They were respectful people and I do not know what caused them to do such a cowardly act. May her soul R.I.P and lets pray for her family in jail.

Typical Dominicans to jump to all sorts of conclusions when they have no details. I do not condone what they did, however there was NO money involved. for all the people claiming the children collected the lady’s money. you all need to get facts straight. The woman was sick, they did not get medical attention simply because they were uncertain of what to do, and what to expect due to many circumstances.
So stop cast judgement on anyone, and just let the family deal with their problem. Majority of you would have done the same damn thing or even worse.People right here in Dominica do alot worse than what they did. So in as much as considering them criminals, watch in y’all backyard/closet first. There’s murder, abortion, incest, robbery etc going on with some of you in various communities. Let it rest man :-x

Hope you are not suggesting that the treatment and death of this woman was justified and as a result, these people (Her Family?????) who did what they did to her should be justified and therefore deserve justice.

You know what hurts me, this woman was a nurse. She spent her time caring for people and providing for her family. When sickness comes her way she is abandoned by the very people she cared for. This woman was a nurse! There are so many resources available to help her starting with the Dominica Nurses Association. Why didn’t these monsters ask for help? There is a Dominica/Florida Nurses Association for crying out loud!!

If this had happened in Dominica, this would have been treated as a natural death rather than manslaughter caused by neglect and the family members would have escaped. In the USA, there are laws and the authorities enforce them. There shall be justice for Nurse Winston.

A woman who spent so many years taking care of other people who suffered. This woman was well loved by all in the community of Loubiere. I know so because I am from Loubiere. No mother especially this one should ever go through this kind of ill treatment especially from those she loved. It’s a real sad situation.

That would never never never happen in Dominica; Mem si say “Yes we care” would help her if children and husband fed up with her. I feel so ashamed for I know those people.

    July 9, 2013

The Heart Is Wicked, who could know it. I don’t know what lead to this disturbing situation, but for God sake, one could not tell the other to help this human being? They were in America. If the felt overwhelmed, why didn’t the call the ambulance. And if they could not take care of her, the Government would provide help for her. This is sad and painful.

I work with patients, and I cannot help see my patients get a needle prick, much less to leave them in pain and agony. These people have serious problems. The lady pain is gone, because she is dead. But their turn is coming. I hope the get just recompense of reward. Lord protect us. We don’t know who or what family member will turn on us.

  33. July 8, 2013

What could she have done to them, for them to allow her to die in this manna. She was A nurse one who takes care of others,no one deserve to die like that, not when family members are living with you or around you. shame on the children to allow there mother to go through so much pain before death. May God help them.

  34. Justice and Truth
    July 8, 2013

She looks like a nice person; an attractive one too. It is heartrending and difficult to comprehend why they allowed her to deteriorate into such a state. This was inhumane treatment of a wife and mother. What a shame!
How sad that she suffered at their hands and neglect. She was at their mercy and they failed to provide her with the necessities of life and to obtain medical care for her. Consider that she also suffered emotionally. Poor lady! If she were here to relate to us of her overall sufferings, it would be difficult to bear. Visualizing it is enough. Anyway, God took you out of your sufferings and misery. R.I.P.

  35. A Voice
    July 8, 2013

No no no. Over the past few weeks I have tried to wrap my head around that whole situation there and there is still no excuse for what happened to that poor lady.

I hope that while she stayed there rotting to death and being eaten alive by maggots, she prayed for her children, man.

There is never smoke without fire and I am certain that if the authorities dig deeper they will find that much more than just neglect was going down in that house.

Do you know how defensive guys are of their mothers? This guy should have lifted his mother and brought her to the emergency room. Even that small act would have been a blessing to him. Instead he along with the rest of them, are cursed.

I hoped that he did get to read his story on DNO before he finally turned himself in. I hope that he relay to his sisters that they will never have peace if and when they ever make it back to Dominica. They will be shunned…

Alah, nurse was beautiful in looks and ways. I cannot accept she suffered so much. Bondie if all you couldn’t take care of her, send her back to meet us. She cared for so many people at PMH, one of us would take care of her. OMG.
Medical people are generally afraid of hospitals and prefer to stay home but it was beyond them, they should call 911 and let her understand that they could not care for her in that condition. Alah she suffered. What was going through Monty’s mind…..something was definitely wrong.R.I.P. Nurse.
