UPDATE: Stabbing at Pierre Charles Secondary School

Pierre Charles Secondary School

Police are investigating an incident at the Pierre Charles Secondary School (PCSS) on Friday that left the security guard and one student nursing stab wounds.

According to Vice Principal of the PCSS Francis Jno Lewis, at about 12:30 p.m. during the annual Fun and Frolic day at the school, a security officer was stabbed in “his back and stomach area,” and a male student who tried to assist him was also injured.

The student and security officer were taken to the Grandbay Hospital for treatment.

“At about 12:30 p.m. the principal’s office was informed that there were persons loitering on the school compound. The vice principal instructed the security officer to escort the loiterers out of the school compound. About five minutes later the security guard returned to the office and informed the vice principal that he was attacked by two persons,” Jno Lewis reported.

“A young man involved in the attack had fled the scene and a young lady, from another secondary school was detained in the office by school personnel and the police was called in to investigate. The police detained the young lady and she was taken to the Grandbay Police Station” he stated.

Jno Lewis said following the incident, a brief assembly was held and the school continued its normal activities without further incident.

He said he has since submitted a report to the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development.

Too many rogue elements in the school system. They need to get expelled once a weapon was used, or may be once it is found on them.
I can imagine what teachers have to go through on a daily basis. Students should not steer a school towards their own deadly path.School leaders need to take back their schools from these elements.

Ignorance at its best.you have to be related to those kids to speak nonsense like that.It doesnt matter who was WRONG, from the youtube video those kids went over board.

Instead of such foolish comment spend time talking to those unruly kids. They giving other people children a bad name.

If you calling what I saw in the video excessive physical force, you too needs to be jailed. The man literally allowed two children to beat him up without lifting a finger and you are talking none-sense about force? I am happy he allowed it to play out that way because he in the hands of the police now would mess up his two younger children who are presently preparing to write Common Entrance Exams. I just hope the Ministry of Education and the Justice system will reward him for taking this public humiliation and seriously punish these children. An example needs to be set.

well sweetie, she had to right to be there neither of them did. they don’t attend that school do they. whether they were sitting or dancing they were trespassing and so when asked to leave they should have respected the authority.

But this young lady is a former student and after repeated offences had to be expelled from said school. But before you continue to paint her as a saint let me ask you, what do you expect from a child who in primary school fought with her mother? constantly provoked and engaged in violent altercations with other young people. Who threatened a principal on facebook, threatened two teachers, had been called in several times and involved with police. Suspended for drug and alcohol use. You don’t know this child or her brother. And it is without a doubt they parents are to be blamed. One is absent and the other does not know how to parent.

There could have been a million other outside students at the school but she was the one the Deputy Principal asked the Security Officer to escort out of the compound because of her bad reputation. Who gave her permission to be at the school? It definitely was not the authorities. She was trespassing. She had no right to be at the school. So, there is no such thing as ‘right passing for wrong’.

Parents sex is not all.You all have a 90% role to play in the upbringing of the children that you all have. Too many times i am hearing the comment: “I cannot do anything with him/her nuh” ‘I cannot wait for school to open’. Sometimes/Many times these are 9 or 10 or 11 years old children. The school can’t raise your children for you, the school can only help. You all hit them, they hit all you back and all you laugh'”kick e kick e kick” like paros. And all you saying ‘he/she bad eh! They come and tell all you Mummy/Daddy ‘Steve/Mary hit me, all you tell them ‘Next time prick his/her eyes. All you should also be jailed for that sort of response. That is not love. That is hating the child! Go to the school and investigate parents. Men know what you all are doing with all you toll toll. Take charge of the family. The mother cannot do it all by themselves.Fathers stop drinking rum, beer, red cap, Mont Gay etc. Sometimes on a fortnight all you faces get ‘wax’ when all you are approaching home, cause all you spend everything already. Take care of the kids. Use the television wisely at home. Set Rules. It’s not the children who purchased them. Some of them see several “lewd” and violent things on them that many adults are yet to see.Parents stop leaving the children for grannie, and all you going to dwe vay all around the place/globe. Granny is weak and decrepit. She cannot do it.I would also gail all you for that..Women try to keep all you men husbands by being good, men love your wives and remain faithful. All you must communicate openly all the time, to keep the family together.
I AM CALLING ON PAPA GOD TO HELP US ALL!

I am not surprised if you would be one of the trouble makers who hate discipline. One of those who is trying hard to lead the school in the direction in which you want. You should be one among the little clique who invited them to the school to disrupt. They succeeded, but when it’s your turn, you may not be as lucky.
You need to take some time out and read more, write more, your writing is still bad.Get away from those you know are causing trouble, and try to be a good boy/girl. Don’t give comfort to what is bad

All the government owned Secondary Schools are in chaos and disorder.Principals are weak and afraid of these young and dangerous yong men and women. I have said this over and over again. There isn’t any one government owned Secondary School on island that is immune to this madness, and disregard to the rule of lawthat is going on in our schools. The wanton use of deadly weapons by these elements, makes some parents quiver in fear for thie sons and daughters.
My Solution? Build a few institutions where the non academic bandits can attend to learn skills, some of them are talented.Everything about them is not BAD! They know the rule of law on island is WEAk.
But trust me education officials themselves don’t even know what to do.
Both teachers and security officials have to be very careful when these elements are fighting and/or distracting their classes.. How are we going to attract good teachers to teach in the future?

      @ boots on the ground

In reality the majority of the youths allegedly involved in crime and disturbances do not listen or contribute to political talk shows. So making this blanket statement is rather irresponsible. There are talk shows around the world.

Many Dominicans are cowardly people as result local talk shows are mild in comparison to other countries. For that matter if there were no talk shows for people to vent thier frustrations the situation locally would have been more volatile.

More good comes from the talk shows the government benefits most since it gives them a barometer of thier weaknesses, which biases folks like you would never point out to them.

To the gossipers, those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Rejoicing in hope but patience in all tribulation. Today maybe one parents trouble but you never know what the future holds for you as a parent or family member. Find the root causes of situations before rushing to conclusions. The students needs God’s grace and mercy., as well as the security guard. Pray and love our children to make that positive change for all.

The students were not from that school, but it was a usual fun day and they were invited by students of the school. They were not welcomed there according to the reaction of the security officer. However, it was not right for the security officer to use such punishment on the girl student of the other school. He over reacted instead of calling for the police to get the child out of the compound. They were both at fault to a certain extent. The security was a former defence force who usually brutalize children like adults rather than dealing with the situation professionally. two weks ago he lash a student three times with a bat on his back rather than stopping the fight. children have rights too, but the answer to all these is the way we all take the law into our own hands.

    March 30, 2012

I cannot understand this!! At a time when there are so many opportunities for young people to advance themselves in these students and young adults are killing each other

The present working generation along with the government of the day is making a concerted effort at making Dominica a better place so that these kids do not have to suffer like how generations before suffered due to lack of opportunities. And instead of parents and young people ceasing these opportunities and holding on to our strong Christian values we making the physical and environmental development taking place all around us loose our sense of reason.

Is that how we find to repay and say thank you to this working generation and the working generations of before?

Frankly, I am disappointed since all our youth can do much better. Guess the hands of youth all over Dominica are now idle: no longer there is a need to get up early in the mornings to carry water from the rivers to bring home and wash up. There is now a shower that you all can open and close at your homes. No longer the need to do homework in groups and at the library before sun down; there is lights at homes and there is television and internet and cell phones. Talk about a sweet life that you all take for granted.

The time is now right for government to introduce National Service for all youth to participate in and place conditions for scholarships of all kinds – common entrance and the rest. Life just too sweet these days.

just imagine a 15yrs old girl all she says to her mum, when she turn 16 the mother will stop troubling her. now that girl is 16 she stopped going to school. all some of the children concern about is SEX like it is going to expire. the law makers have alot of work to do and parents should be going to jail and put their child in a safe place. how can a mother say she don t know what to do with her own 15 yrs old daughter? this is crazy she is not fit to be a mother . there should be a place for such so called mothers see if we would not have fewer young mothers. put the right laws in the books backed up by the appropriate workers and fascilities.

Children live what they learn.

This time the children are not students at that school. They had no reason to be on the school premises and were trespassers. What was their reason for coming there?
It appears to me that some who are in a secondary school with such evil tendencies and actions should not be attending it in the first place.
Once again, their parents will have to bear the consequences of their children’s criminal actions.
If they cannot behave themselves, just arrest them, charge then and send them to prison. They appear to have something against society. They do not love anyone and by no means themselves and do not treasure their freedom. Satan is indeed rampant in these times of increased godlessness.
The woman/child is no lady. Please do not misuse this dignified and gracious word “Lady” out-of-context and refer to criminals and troublemakers as ladies and gentlemen and vice versa. They are far from that and do not measure up to it. Ladies and gentlemen do not conduct themselves as such, by no means criminals/hooligans.

      March 30, 2012

Yea man. School is a Place to learn, expand your mind beyond your wildest imagination and not a place of war. The youths of DA, show us how bad you are by competing with each other for the Best grades….. Just like how generations before you did.

Now the challenge before you is not impossible. We did it, still doing it but much more still have to be done and that is why the youths of DA MUST make their presence be felt by studying hard, having fun, being creative and mastering Maths and Science……… Moving DA in the right direction, getting our Nature Isle ready to lead the Caribbean in the next century and positively maintaining it…… Doing it.

All man a Bad man but if you are interested in crime, drugs and violence, DA will not accept you…….. We will not accept you to become another statistic in prison or buried in the ground. Wise man pays, not bad man. DA is yours, you have the opportunity to be the future everything in the land…… Farmers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, business owners politicians and Prime Ministers……….. Make it happen ner man.

I understand that you have small or major obstacles facing you and you might believe it is too much being in school but you guys are in the place to Come up with solutions for DA problems…….. If youre not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem, wise up.

Every generation had its obstacles too but with our limited resources we never turn to crime and violence and instead we help make DA what it is today. The Youths of DA have more resources and opportunities available to them today, much more than any other generation of DA youths ever had……….. Make great use it ner man. We need you the youths more than ever, more than you imagine, you are Dominica.

I am proud to be a Dominican………. Proud DA 2 D BONE. I love my land of my birth but I know all the youths of the land love DA too. If we all Love D Nature Ilse, why we hurting DA, hurting it with seanseless crime and violence. We hurting ourselves, D blood of the youths washing the land everyday. Is this Patriotic? United we Stand but we will fall if we remain divided. Remember après bonde ce la terre……. Our Dominica.

Blessed Love to all the youths of the Nature Island.

      I LOVE YOU DOMINICA

    March 30, 2012

When the idea of having security came about by Mr. Hyacinth I remember writing a post saying that its not going to help. I see I was right. These troubled teens need to be placed in a special institution like a corrections facility or a boot camp. THEY NEED DISCIPLINE and their parents are the ones who must first acknowledge that their kids need help. ONE HAND CANNOT CLAP!!!! In the West Indies we all know that a community raises a child.

  97. Ellen Evaline Paul
    March 30, 2012

The level of violence amongst our youth within the school environment is quite alarming bringing with it a feeling of helplessness because of the pace at which it is happening. These are our children. What has happened to our children being raised by the community where an adult was free to correct a child and he or she had no choice but to listen or be dealt with for rebellion. I went to a talk on music last night where the speaker made the connection with music and defiant/violent children. Our children are very much exposed to a lot of violent music that becomes apart of their souls becoming a stronghold. As parents we need to listen to the songs our children are listening to. Take careful notes of their choice of artists. Often times they will become exactly what they are listening too. They will dress, talk, and act like the words they hear and see through songs.

Seems like we keep going into circles because we have refused to deal with the route of the problem. We export all kinds of garbage into our island whether through songs, dance, social activities then turn around and blame our youth for being rebellious/violent. Parents lets not fool ourselves. This pretty little innocent boy/girl did not become a defiant overnight. It happen over a period of time and because we are so busy into other people’s matters, we fail to see the changes that are happening with our children.

Many adolescents are exposed to violence at an early age, very often in their own homes, either by witnessing it first hand in family altercations, or by watching it on television or DVDs, cell phones etc. As children absorb violence in the form of entertainment, they become desensitized to pain and suffering. They become immune to trauma. Most of all, they become insensitive to the consequences of ego-serving rage, the kind that gives the villain power and invincibility. The media entices its audience with unmitigated acts of violence, while purging these acts of all moral parameters. Young and vulnerable minds come away from the screen believing that power justifies all—even murder. Many begin imitating their screen hero by intensifying their desire to live raging. Others who are themselves the victims of violence and bullying become trapped in the cycle of brutality.

Another factor is the lack of parental attention in many homes . While many argue that poverty creates family neglect, I can find equally valid arguments for close nurturing families that grow stronger during times of hardship. (I am a testimony to this). In fact, the best in human character surfaces during periods of want and suffering. It is not poverty that creates the criminal because poverty has also created Presidents, doctors etc. It is the choice that parents make—the choice not to give their children the attention they deserve. And this is a choice that has been made both under dire circumstances and during the best of times.
Parents who understand their responsibility as the stewards of their children’s moral compass or sense of spirituality will make this sense of stewardship the guiding principle of their lives—no matter what their economic or social situations may be. Children need love and attention in order to be well rounded. Most of all they need the faith that despite all that’s breaking down around them, they are rooted to the earth. Who else but parents/adults can give a child the roots of empathy.

We need to bring back the lesson behind the Sunday school songs: (Let me be a little kinder, let me be a little blinder to the faults of those around me let me praise a little more. Let me be while I am weary just a little be more caring let me think more of my neighbour and a little less of me.) The message bombarding our youth right now is that they should “get it all”. Can you imagine the negativity that plays on the mind of a teens already suffering from empathy deficit. We must face the issue at hand: what will we pass on to our kids? A Legacy of Violence or a Legacy of Light?

Thirdly, the unstable and potentially dangerous nature of the adolescent mind. Many teens going through puberty are dealing with acceptance issues, peer pressure, problems at home with parents and siblings and the physical changes that accompany the process of becoming a young adult. All of these circumstances can lead a child towards making bad decisions and turning to violence. Hormonal changes during adolescence also increase teen susceptibility to
emotional swings, sleep changes, defiance, behaviour volatility, argumentativeness and attraction to violence. Couple with this aggression and the challenge of teens trying to find their place in this world, and the combination can lead to school violence.
