Twenty-nine-year-old Glen Alexander of Scotts Head was fined $1,000 for attacking Chad Caesar with a pair of scissors in that community last week.

Alexander, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste yesterday pleaded guilty to wounding the 22-year-old complainant, by inflicting several stab wounds to his face, hand and chest with a pair of scissors during an altercation on July 14, 2010.

For the wounding charge Alexander was ordered to pay $1,000 by December 31, 2010 or he spends 10 months in prison. He is also expected to pay compensation of $600 to Caesar by the same date or he faces six more months in prison.

The incident occurred on the Scotts Head basketball court at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The facts of the case as presented by the police prosecutor stated that Caesar was playing cricket with his ball on the basketball court when the defendant came and started playing with it.

Caesar told the defendant ‘not to touch his ball’ since he (Alexander) had already threatened to kill him.

Chad Caesar

Following this, a struggle ensued and the defendant removed a pair of scissors from his pocket and started stabbing Caesar.

When confronted by the police later that day, Alexander stated,  “Chad give me two jack. He taller than me. I can’t fight with him so I pull out my scissors in my pocket and I ‘chook’ him with it.”

Before passing sentence, Alexander told the magistrate that he never touched the complainant’s ball. He said that Caesar was the aggressor, who had pushed him several times before he retaliated.

During mitigation Alexander stated, “I doh have woman. I doh have kids. I not a problem feller. I not a troublesome feller… twenty-nine years and first time them thing happening to me Your Worship.”

“It wasn’t my fault,” he further stated.

“You could have severed his jugular vein and you would have been there for murder. You not only stabbed him in the neck,  you stabbed him in other places … I expect you to come here and say I should have moved, I should have exercised better judgment… ,” Baptiste said.

“Dominicans, it’s never our fault, and if it’s our fault then it become soucouyant fault,” Magistrate Baptiste remarked.

Alexander smiled as he bounced out of the courtroom after receiving his sentence.

Meanwhile, outside of the courtroom, Caesar expressed disappointment in the sentence handed down to the defendant. In apparent physical pain, he told Dominica News Online that $1,600 was not enough for all the pain and anguish he suffered for the past week.

He informed that he had spent nearly four days at the hospital and had lost a large volume of blood and almost died.

He told DNO that the defendant had not being truthful in court when he said that he(the complainant)  had been the aggressor. He assured that he never pushed the defendant but had only asked him not to touch his ball.

“Before I turn back to go and play my football he just take out his scissors and give me a first chook in my chest…I try to hold his hand back still get another chook on my face and hand…” Caesar said.

Caesar explained that he had received five stitches for the face wound, four for the chest wound and eight on his hand. He said that someone could have actually placed the tip of a finger into the hole of his chest wound. He noted though his ribs were not damaged.

Caesar said that he believed the dispute had begun some time ago when the defendant started making moves on his girlfriend, who rejected him. According to Caesar, Alexander told his girlfriend that whenever he [Alexander] saw him [Caesar] he would ‘diss’ him and if he said or did anything he would kill him, according to Caesar.

Caesar said that he is seriously considering taking civil action against the defendant.

You know it is eay for a magistrate to allow a criminal to walk free. 1600 for attempted murder may seem an okay punishment to her since she is not the one who was harmed. I wonder what that young thug’s punishment would be, had it been her relative. No wonder our youths are so brazen, apathetic, and have no respect for the law. We need tougher punishments/laws. I would make him spend some time in prison. People are imprisoned for carrying a lighter and mister walks free? Magway sa!

Mrs. Baptiste, it is indeed sad when a crime of that nature is punished with a slap on the wrist. On the other hand, I cant understand why the charge of GBH- Grevious Bodily Harm, or Attempted Murder was not filed against the defendant. The evidence is clear but still, we have a dangerous criminal “bouncing” out of court after receiving a slap on the wrist for trying to kill someone. When are you magistrates other than Tiyani of course, going to get the message that the crime control perspective must be implimemented in Dominica to get a grip on those bastard criminals? Sad but true, the “bleeding heart” Magistrate Evalina has done it again. No wonder why she feels threatened by those with bigger balls than her.

I agree with all the statements that state that the punishment does not fit the crime! This is nonsense! That is injustice. Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptist what message are you sending to the criminals out there? I did not hear the other side of the story, but it is apparent that the defendant admitted that he is guilty. He should serve some time in prison – a significant amount of time to. Dominica magistrates seems to be easy on crimes. This is an attempted murder Judge! Attempted murder! You are sending the wrong message. Is that the price you are putting on the wounds inflicted by that criminal on that young man?

And to the people who think that Dominicans living overseas have nothing to contribute, or have no right to comment, you have very little understanding of the world that we are now living in. What percentage of the economy depends on remittance from Dominicans living overseas? I can’t remember the exact figure, but I know it is significant. And remember to, when Dominica get ‘free money’ from other countries, it is actually not free – some people, including hard working Dominicans living overseas pay taxes that help you in Dominica. Furthermore, there are several Dominicans living overseas that contribute more to the country than some that are living at home. So who are you to want to shut us up. Grow up young man or woman! Some of you are so cut up in your short-sightedness that you can’t see the global picture of the world that we are living in right now. We love our country just as much as you do.

What if all Dominicans return home. You think Dominica will be able to provide jobs for all that are currently working? (Yes I know there will be some economic activities as a result- but don’t you think that unemployment rate would likely leap, and that there would be more idle people around? Think again Mr./Mrs. “Fed Up”. You need to educate yourself and see the world that we now live in. Hope these words bring your out from your Fed Up state. And if you think I should not write this, too bad for you, but you will never silence Dominicans living in the diaspora. Take that, put it in your pipe, and smoke it!

Gone are the days of having an argument with someone and walking away without the fear that the person would come back at you with a knife, gun, or cutlass. If this is the beginning of a trend to resolve our problems with violence, then our personal security is in trouble. Although violent actions have always been around, the frequency at which things are happening seems to be increasing at an alarming rate. Am I the only thinking that? Sa nou ka faire, mes amis?

    @fed up:

You are correct to a certain degree. There are times when we do much ado about nothings. However, just because one lives in another country and he/she comments about the state of what is happening in DA does not mean that it does not carry weight. You are a Dominican no matter where you go; and we are concerned about our island. I think most people comment, because they are genuinely concerned with the welfare of DA. Despite a few negative comments on DNO, I think that providing feedback, and getting engaged on issues that affect us all (living abroad or not) can stimulate some of us to come up with constructive solutions. Some of us live overseas for various reasons – education, employment, healthcare, etc. However, the heart of a Dominican is always connected to DA. We are passionate about who we are. We are not really concerned about crimes in other countries, because we do not feel that emotional connection – even though we live there.

Home is where the heart resides…not where the body lives. I am not concerned about other people and whether they share their views on what is happening in their respective country. I love that we can have a dialogue (good or bad) about the health of our island.

    July 20, 2010

Unbelievable that the punishment issued to the defendant was a fine and a miserly fine of $1600 at that for stabbing. The punishment does not fit the crime. The laws should be strengthened to increase the punishment for stabbing. Mr. Caesar could have died. The guilty man shoud have been imprisoned in the first instance. The law must act as an effective deterrent. It, together with enforcement, must function in such a manner that first time offenders are dissauded from committing later and more serious crimes.

These criminals need to be executed. I mean not that gruesome stuff like hanging…that’s inhumane…..lethal injections would do just fine for me. either way you’re dead not to cause any more hurt and harm.

The question I am asking myself is; ” What has gone so terribly wrong with society?”
We can blame the police, government or even the churches but at the end of the day it takes a collective approach to fight crime. It is time that we as individuals start making a difference and take charge of our communities. We hear all the beff and the dirtiness going on in our community but we pretend all is well until something bad happens. Then we run on here and start pointing fingers.

We need to engage those in need of help and guide them. If every responsible adult in every community befriend a child we know is going in the wrong direction, then we may start seeing results. Our youth are lost. Blame TV, OBAMA, SKERRIT, HOBBS, CARETTE, PASTORS, PRIESTS etc it really does not matter. We have a problem with crime in Dca and if we don’t acknowledge it then crapaud smoke our pipe. Nou bien pwe! I hate to say that but we are heading in St.Lucia’s direction. I am always for the idea of flogging violent offenders in public. Yes, we really need to bring back the Cat-O-Nine to teach these so called bad men a lesson

Unfortunately, the victims’ families are the ones who are also left holding the bag of sorrow and pain. Courage to the family…hope all goes well with the victim…no matter what happened, he is someone’s child, afterall.

Everytime I turn around, it appears that violent crimes are becoming commonplace in Waitu.

Gone are the days of living on an island without fear and reprisal if you got into an argument or disagreement with someone. In many cases, it appears that life is imitating art, because we have allowed the media to infuse and alter the common sense that we once had. I am not saying this is what happened in this case, because we do not have all the facts. However, more often than not, we allow out impulses to be governed by what is projected on the internet and TV, and then we lose our sense to operate rationally when confronted with a problem. I think we have lost a bit of balance in the past years.

I just hope we do not cross the line and get into the realm of Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti, etc. Once we cross that line, it will be hard to readjust and go straight again…
