Students fight running battles in Roseau

Onlookers at the scene on Wednesday

Police officers were called to the scene of the Pointe Michel bus stop in the capital Roseau Wednesday lunchtime, as school children from various secondary schools on the island confronted and fought with each other in running battles.

It’s not clear what prompted these acts of violence witnessed by several onlookers.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that it was a gang fight between Pointe Michel and Loubiere secondary school students.

DNO was on hand when the police made some arrests, and will continue to investigate the matter.

got me into fighting games really quick honestly what I did was basically what u said started learning fundamentals, then went to a character I like spent time learning proper combos while also watching guides and stuff like that and it only took me like a month and a half to break the beginner ceiling. I can now do stuff I never thought I could before like TOD and I’m steadily rankin up (I’m a supreme Kai rank rn but I’m working on gettin to ssjg)

    Ok a little long

And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell Matthew 18:9
If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. Matthew 18:8
the next time you look lustfully at a Victoria secrete model you know what you should do… the next time you look at something you should not be looking at… well…the next time you walk over to your girl friend’s or boyfriend’s home… ..
To those of you who want public flogging …..How about we flog every one found guilty of fornication…..STD’s will surely be reduced also the amount of children born of marriage….sounds fair right?
Hey if a parent doesn’t discipline their kid then they don’t want well for their child
Because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.” Hebrews 12:6
but there is a right and a wrong way to discipline a child and what most of you all are suggesting on here is child abuse…and to all who boast that their parents discipline them without abusing them then good for you…but many kids are not so lucky…….
I have seen my siblings hitting their kids and I can say that none of my siblings have ever abused their kids I have never abused my kids either….. But and my siblings and I were abused as kids and lots of kids went through and are still being abused…so to solve this simply, ban corporal punishment
….i swear these people think that hitting a child is the only form of discipline there is …as a matter of fact it is not a form of discipline it is punishment…so if you disciplined properly there would be no need for punishment…..
And like I said before no child over the age of 7 or 10 for the maximum age should be beaten….it only has temporary benefits….the child will commit the act if they know they won’t get caught….and is that your goal as a parent?…. Beating only has negative/harmful outcomes people…… :( :( :(

THIS IS VERY SHAMEFUL TO HEAR ABOUT. THESE CHILDREN HAVE CHANGED EVERYTHING. WHEN I USED TO GO TO SECONDARY SCHOOL EVEN PRIMARY SCHOOL WE WERE ALL SO INNOCENT. NOW WE HAVE ALL THESE CHILDREN THAT MAKING THE EDUCATION SYSTEM LOOK LIKE CRAP. I AM A SCHOOL TEACHER AND I ALWAYS WARNING MY STUDENTS DONT MAKE ME CATCH THEM IN ANY FIGHT EH CAUSE THEY WOULD NOW HAVE TO FIGHT WITH ME. THIS IS WHERE I WILL KNOCK THEM OUT EH. I NOT STYING UP AND PLANNING ALL THOSE LESSONS AND THEN FOR CHHILDREN TO FORM THE FOOL . GASAR ALL 2 O CLOCK IN DA MORNING I DOING LESSON PLANS AND CORRECTING PAPERS AND THOSE CHILDREN WANT TO MAKE ME LOOK LIKE I AINT DOING SHITT.I BOUNCING THEIR HEADS WII. THAT NOT HAPPENING WITH ME NA.EVERY DAY I WARNING MY STUDENTS. TEACHERS NEED TO TAKE A STAND.

    • Anonymous
      March 22, 2012

I applaud you as a teacher. However I wish this was so easy for all teachers. Those days parents are so ignorant of the facts that surround the punishment of their children. Some students especially those with ignorant parents go home and tell their parents that the teacher punished him/her. Without asking questions they simple start to bad talk the teacher infront of the child. Next day child coming school with an attitude ready for the teacher. Now tell me….Where do we as teachers stand. Gone are the days where parents would come and reason out with teachers to find out what is happening. Now they come well bardae (ready) to fight with the teacher. Trust me…..it is not an easy road in this school system.

To make matters worse teachers are their own enemies. When a teacher punishes a child there are some teachers who meet up with the parents and play Ms or mister perfect. They take sides with the parents and even go as far as to become best friends with the child who has done wrong. Therefore they look like the perfect teacher loved by the children because that teacher will not punish me. The teacher who then does the punishment look like the most wicked teacher in the world.

This education system……only God knows with the level and maturity of some parents and the teachers at the various schools.

Educational psychologist Dr. Shani Shillingford in a previous news article was right

People aren’t born monsters – Rather they are created

Childhood environments can be toxic & permanently debilitating especially to the youth

Centuries of studies in the area of violent behavior have uncovered a few important commonalities:

Low self-esteem leads to criminality and violence

Thus, in my mind, if I were to see a significant increase in criminality and violence my first concern is to evaluate the self-esteem of the culture.

Is there a prevailing loss of self-esteem, and/or increase in self loathing due to a diminishing local cultural pride?

If so – then what is the source of this diminishing pride among the people: A perceived lack of opportunities upon which to self actualize? Or some other perceived (whether real or imagined) lack of accomplishment? etc.

The youth of a nation are the future of a nation. They are energetic and idealistic. However, the culture must take active measures to harness their energetic and idealistic traits in a positive fashion. A culture must take a hands-on approach to guiding the youthful energy in a positive direction; and reinforce their accomplishments with public reward and celebrity!

A people must raise the youth – Don’t leave it up to the government nor the school system; And do not leave it up to the youth themselves and the TV!

What is wrong with these ‘children’ is that their parents used the television to babysit them from the time they were out of the womb and could focus.

Furthermore, they have been fed a diet of violent video games for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

All of this has been further aggravated by the fact that their parents do not encourage them to go to church on Sundays, to cultivate any respect for authority or to engage in activities for their own personal development.

Now that they spew venom we ask, ‘what has happened to them?’. It is common knowledge, what has happened to them.

      :-D LOL! LOL!

My sista, you have me dying there.

Ofcourse I have told a lie and did other bad stuff. But when my parents caught me, my little behind was on fire and I didn’t like blows, so I knew then to adjust my behavior so that my little behind would not be on fire in the future.

Don’t misconstrue the Bible man. When Jesus stated that, He was talking in parables about people abandoning whateever it is that is making them sin and preventing them from entering the Kingdom of Heaven.

My sista it is much more wickeeeeeeeeeed-ness to seat there and do nothing about the outward waywardness of our children. You spare the rod, you going to spoil the child, period. Come tomorrow when your child is sitting in prison or worse, the rod sure won’t be spared against him.

LOL! You know what, the next time you see these young raggamuffins battling it out in the street, jump in the middle and grab one of them and hug him and tell him, ‘it is because your mammy beat you when you were a kid that you are fighting, ain’t it?’

See if you won’t get a first hand experience as to what abuse really is…

Tiny i get the feeling you are a victim of abuse or a family member to one of these kids affiliated in such activity. You seem so defensive for the children who are engaging in such violence. What if innocent people get hurt or killed while these fellas are pelting rocks and bottles. Quite frankly its time our law make examples of them…as for the education act…it leaves room for the students to be criminals yet stay in school. These 2 dont mix cause if i pay my money to send my child to school and innocently he gets hurt..then hmmmm…

you seem to be using the bible and interpreting it to ur own liking. With the recent uprising among students parents need to very well use the rod and whip the child. There is a difference between discipline and abuse…and if parents of today raised their kids as they were raised before they would have more respect. Gone are the days when you would pass an adult on the street and not say good morning mam/sir…gone are the day when children had to be indoors by 6pm.

      March 21, 2012

I saw a scuffle like that a month ago and was shocked that all the adults on the street stopped to look and put in their two cents, even the bus drivers got out of their buses but it took the Jollys security guard to break it up. It Dominica so boring that even adults get excited watching or being in the action. Get those kids into sports, both boys and girls and let them take out their aggression in a positive way that will enhance their lives. Children are not encouraged to speak their minds and so they must swallow all of their anger. It festers inside and it has to come out somewhere. Give these young people a fighting (no pun intended chance)

    • March 21, 2012

If what you are saying about the woman is true, what she said about the acid for her kid to throw in the other kid”s eye, the authority need to charge her and send her in jail

What the government need is to put a police station in Loubiere, because the Pointe Michel station is not only for that village also for the villagers of Loubiere, also not forgetting that the kids from Pointe Michel will be passing that village to go to school etc, this is just sad what is going on in DA recently, worst thing to do is to go to some Loubiere parent and complain about their kids, their kids are always right and disrespectful to adults, they need some serious whooping

In my time of school we knew nothing about fighting, farless to even have gangs. I say, start making an example of them, if they can’t hear they’ll feel. The parents apparently don’t take any interest from the home, that’s why they turn out as such!!

    Boot Camp

let me suggest a quick solution or rather a deterant to this out of control children.

Could the authorities begin to itentify well trained police officers to council these troubled ones. Secondly start putting plans in place to construct what is know as a boot camp to discipline and rhabilitate them so that wen they leave the experience will not be something dey would want to return to.
Thirdly when the police authorities are sent out to put order with in a students brawl they should go in with enough manpower to both whip and control these children.
Sorry im so harsh but this children cause enough destruction to property, instill fear in the younger kids and cost the state and parents money.

Enough talk. Time to really act.

are you a woman…cause i know most Dominican women are single mothers….how on earth are you going to give an whooping to these boys as big as the ones above…he even bigger than the police officer….and what good have whooping done to anyone in the past

a stern, determined strong willed woman can mold any child of her own. if these kids are brought up to be respectful they will respect their parents and elders no matter how big their chest is, how much beard they have or how old they are. so when ur son turns 16 roles switch n he is the father and u r the child, these parents need to go back to the roots, and show these young men whose in charge

      • March 22, 2012

People of my generation got their whooping or the threat of whooping> that kept u in line. My mother was a single mom who raised 3 of us in poverty, she had very little education. I and my sisters went to DGS. You think we could do that those kids doing today. u were respectful to ALL adults. Oh by the way my 2 sisters did ok, one is a doctor the other is a diretor of a major institution on the island. I also finished university. The key was the community looked out for the children. I dare not go complain to my mother that I got caned at school or that an adult remonstrated with me over something cause I would get chastised.

We are teaching our children not to be moral. We are teaching them the value of the dollar about everything else. We are teaching them that power and position means more than everything else. They are young and easily molded. What else can we expect when we the adults, guardians, their role models have weakening or even no morals?

You said precisely what I was thinking while reading your post and I want to add for those people who think that this types of behavior should be condoned. ” I say shame on them they know so who the cap fit let them wear it. Ironically, today while driving thru EAST NEW YORK in Brooklyn a place if a driver happens to get a flat tire my advise to them is drive on that flat tire to safety my point YES! we have bad eggs and so called gansters. the thing that caught my attention and my own experience as a former detective the street corners were police officers of all shapes sizes patroling the streets that really brought back sweet memories so I inquired of an officer the reason for that massive show of presence, he told me there are several ways to deal with crime and those who commit crimes, the clear message to the bad eggs that any wrong move on their part will be dealt with full force. We both agreed that such show of force makes a difference. An let no one tell me we like to compare the big countries with Dominica and when other references are made every body cite the same develop countries. My friends we have misplaced our own self values and self worth as a result it takes effects and affects the way our children behave and becomes influence by whats not good in our society. I am proud to have served my country and will support all efforts to eradicate the anti- social behavior regardless of who it is. Hold on brothers and sisters of all law enforcement agenciesin Dominica, we stand ready to lend our support when ever called upon.

yep yep yep…..its only going to get worse…we indeed need a change in policy….how about a ban on corporal punishment….jail any parent who beat their kids and if these parents really love their kids they will be forced to discipline and punish them in a proper manner….in a manner that actually brings positive outcomes….

if they were getting corporal punishment at home there would be to damn scared to misbehave in public because they would know that any bad news in mummy or daddy’s ear means a good old ass whooping session ( with guava whip or tamarind whip) to get them back on track.

DOMINICA has a set of desperate young school children and the only thing that comes out from thier mouths is kill, kill kill .Alot of blame have to fall on the so-call breeders who have neglected and failed their children.Unless you discipline your child and ensure that they are brought up properly you donot love your children.

That is not always true. There are some really good parents who really try with their kids but to no avail. Like it or not outside influences also has a major part to play in a child’s development. Do you remember when children start pre-school and come home saying things that you yourself wouldn’t dare say in front of them. It seems every time children misbehave the parents are to be blamed. My brother and I grew up under a very strict grandmother who taught as manners and respect for others. She loved us but wasn’t afraid to discipline us if we step out of line yet my brother still strayed. If you talk to him you would notice how well mannered he is but he is always up to no good. He changed in his last few years of high school. Remember parents cannot be around 24/7. All adults (teachers, political and religious leaders) have a part to play. It’s very easy for a child who is badly brought up to influence a good child.

hmmmm we better brace ourselves, when gang violence starts to infiltrate our schools its is a VERY disturbing sign…I hope that something is done soon to address this. we need a change of policy Mr.Minister. U.S.E can’t come at the expense of exposing those who truly want to learn, to intimidation and violence in school.

Well boy, it seems everyday is another episode. Students beating teachers, students battling in the streets.

It is high time some examples need to be made of them youts there. The current system we have there not working people; fix it.

It is obvious now that the youts them gone astray and it seems the inmates running the asylum. Children cannot correct themselves you know, it is up to the adults in society to stop this violent trend in behavior amongst the youts.

These are little vagabonds dressed in school uniforms, you cannot talk them out of their behavior. Being bad right now is a crest of honor for them. More drastic measures have to be taken to curb that trend.

There are no two ways about it; spare the rod and spoil the child…

Interesting…think its the Times we live in
And sadly the youth of today “WANT IT NOW”

Our Leaders in High and Low Offices havent shown The upward and Honest ways of life, assisited Nicely by our Institutions, Churches,Legal and Policy Makers etc…so its fully Rotten..

We have made Man Made Gods upon our land…some Folks are excused at all levels of misbehaviour etc…..

Our so call wise folks…just chat alot on radio talk show write fancy articles go to a few Press Conferences here and there but Nothing as success stories etc uplift the Dominican Torch.

Ignornacy is rampant arcoss the island and embraced by those who know better..

Our Musicans cant write constructive and uplifting Lyrics and get better arrangement for their Musical works…its everything in a Pot that is rather clouded with bad elements..

So we have to admit we in Bad Shape…

Im of the Firm Belief that if the councils of law and order and those who want a change Hit the Nail on the Head come clean with ours Lies and misguidedness it will assisit atleast 80% in showing a trusted and rightful direction..

But sadly many serve two masters on island…so nothing will change until its erradicated fully!

Maybe by elements of Nature does bring back sense in a hard knock out Punch which suddenly awakes those who have gotten to Pill of Ignornace.
