UPDATE WITH PHOTOS: Three Dominicans, one Venuezelan arrested in Montserrat drug bust

The accused from left Derrick Nicholas, Elroy Gussie, Ackmel St. Jean and Venezuelan Juan Vasquez

Police on the island of Montserrat say they have arrested and charged three Dominicans and one Venezuelan in a drug operation involving 65 kilos of cocaine worth $3-million.

The men have been identified as  Derrick Nicholas, Elroy Gussie, Ackmel St. Jean of Dominica, and Juan Vasquez of Venezuela.

Package of the illegal drug found by Montserrat police

They appeared in court on February 1, 2013, facing the charges of drug possession and importation.

The Royal Montserrat Police Service (RMPS) said the illegal substance was found buried in two separate dump sites in exclusion zones on the island. Exclusion zones were formed in Montserrat due to volcanic activities and have been deemed too dangerous for human habitation.

The four men were intercepted in a Dominican registered fishing vessel with no illegal substance on board. However, after the interception, the police conducted a search of the exclusion zone and several days later the drug was found.

The police say the men had dropped off the cocaine and were attempting to leave the island.

The illegal drug has been taken out of Montserrat for safekeeping and forensic testing while US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has been brought in to assist in the investigation, the RMPS said.

The four men have been remanded in custody for further court hearings and security at police headquarters on the island has been heightened.

St. Jean is on bail in Dominica for his alleged involvement in the seizure of 20 live rounds of 7.65 ammunition, four live rounds of .38 ammunition, 10 live rounds of 9mm ammunition and one 9mm magazine.

The seizure was done during a police operation which took place in Tan Tan in September 2012.

These guys are not “kingpins” or the people responsible for “poisoning children” . They are low level mules. They are just desperate people looking for a big pay day. They were replaced the next day. $3M (street value, not wholesale value) is literally NOTHING to the cartels that are sending the product from south America nor the distributors receiving it in North America. This means less than nothing to the people who make the REAL money off this ….. Don’t be fooled by thinking this is anymore than janitorial work.

This will come to bite the Govt. By condoning these activities, or at least not throwing the full weight of the law at the perpetrators, it will not be long before Dominican passports will become a virtual hindrance to travel and those who forked out big money to get one through the economic citizenship programme one may well be persuaded to try and get their money back.

What is the DA police doing when he didnot appear to sign because according to law he is supposed to once or twice a week what ever way they do it, the person who sign bail bail for him, his /her money should be in government coffers already. • MIA

    • Justice and Truth
      February 7, 2013

      “Forfeit”

Those who stand bail for them should know better and let them remain in custody. People are taking chances with their property when they bail out criminals. They could lose their homes/ money or other possessions. If they have land and put it up as surety, they could lose that too.
On the other hand criminals know they will be bailed out and so with no conscience they continue plying their trade, even leaving the island in the hope they will not be caught. They know they are not supposed to leave the island when they are under bail. They should be kept incarcerated with no bail.

When the US government gave us the gun boats we said it is because they trust our government ; I am associated with people who are associated with intelligence and there is a lot of heat on the trail of the drug dealers using the the Dominica/ Venezuela connection. The upward movement of ths drug route became evident when drug traffickers caught by theDominican Coadt guard conveniently given red carpet treatment and their boats returned to the drug traffickers.

It must be proven that they were the ones involved with the drugs and who buried them. Their lawyers will try to have them released. However, let us hope not, that if they try (as usual), they will not be successful.

When we heard the news we were all saying no it can’t be our Dominica only to realize that it is

Since then we are being call all sorts of names and some of the natives are asking us to go back to our island, not too many of us are residing in Montserrat, many Dominicans who were residing in Montserrat before the disaster got the opportunity to move to the UK, and doing well

We are abiding by the laws of the island, and for these three tugs, drugs dealers to come all the way from Dominica with their Venezuelan drug man spoiling the name of Dominica and making things hard for us

The people of Montserrat would always show their gratitude to us saying how much they appreciated when their island was hard and many of their relatives moved to Dominica, every where you turn in Montserrat the people would say to us that their relatives reside in Wesley, Marigot, Bense etc
We the few Dominicans left on the island will be singing a petition asking the Montserrat Government to throw their ass in jail for a very long time, they choose the right boat but landed on the wrong shore

        @Met yo:

Well, you’ll just have to wait and see, won’t you. The purpose of the article is to summarize a current event (the arrest of persons for alleged illegal activity). The article is not serving as the vehicle for the prosecution or the defense, so it does not have to present any evidence to support or dispute the allegations pended to the arrest. There may very well be more to the story than the author of the article has access to.

So before you start castigating the Montserrat court system and its law enforcement as a cartoon and a joke, I suggest you start working on your critical thinking skills…and report back to us in a few years so we can assess your progress.

Once my co. can keep their mouths shot, see no evil, hear no evil. After 24hours, they’ll be considered missing. After couple years……..deemed dead. not trying to be too harsh but we need our beautiful country back.

Dominica POLICE take heed! Thats how it is done, you keep the drugs for safe keeping. In DOMINCA when the exhibits are suppose to be at the court hearing, they are no where to be found.

If the test results says it is cocaine and not baking soda, the let these papas get the full extend of the punishment they deserve.

Even if it is farine, they must be punished because there is intent! Trust in Montserrat they don’t have rich “uncles” like here that can put up limitless bail.

Wonderful news Montserrat please deal with them with severity, they were all there to help destro your people. Give them double time, them lazy bastards don’t want to work hard at all. Don’t know why some big fish not eating half of each of them to make them die off asking themselves a question.
Good move from your ploice department.

If they are guilty of the alleged criminal activity, no doubt, the prosecutor should have no mercy. You commit the crime, then do the time. These drug kingpins must get the message that they are destroying our young people in the communities in the region.
