Trinidadian teacher convicted for sexually molesting male students

A 43-year-old Trinidadian man was sentenced to 35 years in prison by a court in The Bahamas for sexually molesting two of his male students.

Andre Birbal, an art teacher employed by The Bahamas’ education ministry, was found guilty of having unnatural sexual intercourse with a boy under 18 years of age.

Justice Hartman Longley sentenced Birbal to 15 years on count one and 20 years each on counts two, three, four, five, and eight. The last counts were to run concurrently with each other, but consecutive with the sentence of the first count, the Freeport News reported.

Birbal was 39 when he victimized the first boy, 11 at the time, between January 2002 and June 2007, while the second boy was 13 when that incident occurred between September 2002 and December 2005.

The judge said Birbal, a father, showed no remorse.

“The conclusion, however, seems inescapable on the evidence that you used the good offices of the church, your position as a teacher and your relationship with the boys to gain the confidence not only of the boys, but also the confidence and trust of their parents while scheming all the time to carry out a diabolical plot of the predatory sexual exploitation of these boys to gratify your depraved sexual appetite,” Justice Longley said.

“The appropriate sentence reflect in a real way the gravity of these most serious heinous crimes and the affect upon these young boys — the youngest of whom appears to have been psychologically damaged by these crimes,” he said, adding that that victim described himself as Birbal’s sex slave.

“I’ve said all the way through this, the truth will set you free and that’s what I believe in. So if he has been wrongly convicted, then hopefully he’ll be taken care of and if he has been rightly convicted that’s it.”

I really wish the jail sentences in St.Maarten could be just as harsh . For offences like these they receive about 2yrs and even in some cases just probation.

I wish they would give out that kind of sentences here, but those hypocrites will still cry and say that it is excessive.

Hey, can we get that judge to come work in Dominica?

If our judges was more like him, DA would be way better off, way better….

    Just an observation:

In the Bahamas a man is convicted of molesting two children and is sentenced to 35 years imprisonment. In Dominica those convicted of similar offenses are at most convicted to about 5 years, sometimes much lower.

Assuming the man in Bahamas, currently in his 40’s, serves his entire term and survives long enough to be released he will never molest another child again.

In Dominica we have people that are known molesters and rapist going in for a few years only to come out and commit the crimes again. Some are in and out every few years making a mockery of our so called justice system. It’s a revolving door of abuse.

It’s time we take sex crimes seriously and send a clear message to the perpetrators of abuse. The only thing more hideous than a sex crime is murder in my opinion.

Let me share with you why I strongly believe these people must be executed and the impracticality of years in prison.

In Dominica for e.g, let’s suppose we have 400 prisoners. Let’s say $50 per day is spent on one prisoner for food, light, water, clothes ok

    1 prisoner cost per annum —> $50 x 365 days = $18,250

    multiply that by 400 prisoners> x400
    ————————————————————————
    $7,300,000

My people 7 million, three hundred thousand dollars.

My fellow Dominicans, many of these prisoners who come out become even more professional. They repeat these crimes, wasting even more tax payers money. Do you know what at least half of that money would do? It could be used to invest in job growth and development and many more ventures in this country. My people your tax money is wasting, supporting criminals like these!

There are some people who deserve imprisonment for petty crimes but it must be accommodated with rehabilitation and counselling and intervention programs to curb these behaviours.

I strongly object to imprisonment to homosexuals especially when they go after little boys, first degree murderers, serial killers, king pins and drug lords, apostates/treason practitioners, incest with father and daughter and the list of these gruesome crimes, these people should be executed. It is grave injustice to keep them imprisoned.

One may argue that we are not god on the contrary, Allah commanded to execute these people. When you punish them in this life you are doing the will of Allah in the land to produce a more conduscive and morally upright society. Most of these criminals are unrepentant, they boast how many people they kill like it’s a sport.

I strongly support capital punishment to unrepentant sinners. No apologies.

I don’t think you should assume what Allah would do in these sitations. Apparently it seems these days Allah wants death even to innocent women, men and children.

Strongly agree or enroll them in martial arts classes. My son as soon as he reaches 3 or 4 yrs, martial arts time! No joke! I know by the time he is a teenager he will be a dan. No feminine sports and sponge bob for him, is manly sports, if I’m gonna give him toys, I’ll give him a toy gun, water gun, toy horses, tanks etc, no male dolls. Teach those children how to shot and ride :-D

Besides teaching them how to do those things, teach them ethics, respect for the elderly, respect for people and for women. Align them to good role models not these damn BET people.

Raise boys into men so that they will have bravery and honour to defend themselves and their families!

      MOTS

Gaynproud has the right to be mad at you; but apart from that I had a few laughs again, from you story.

You sound just like my brother about the man shaking hand with man–only form of physical contact. My brother used to watch baseball when he was here, in Toronto, with me; and he could not stand it; like when one of those players would do something good like hit a “homerun” with the bases loaded–that is called a grandslam–and their fellow players would compliment them with a great big hug. Those guys really do a lot more than handshakes while they play those sports, you know!

Anyway you sound a lot like a ladies’ man. I am one of age here, but I know a ladies’ man when I read his sentiment about the ladies. Thank you for the “niceness” about the ladies, okay!
