Two men remanded in attack on police officer

Attempts are being made to airlift Jules to Martinique for further medical treatment

Two men have been remanded in custody while Magistrate Michael Bruney gave the prosecution until February 18, 2016 to put its act together in a case of attempted murder on the life of police officer, Wilburton Jules.

Brandon Guiste and Kenrick Mitchel of Kingshill were arrested and appeared in court on a charge of attempted murder on the life of the officer.

Jules was severely beaten on Carnival Monday by a group of men and is now a patient at the Princess Margaret Hospital. The court was told that efforts are being made to have him airlifted to Martinique for further medical attention.

The prosecution, led by inspector Michael Laudat told the court that Jules’ condition was “not good” when he was rushed back to the hospital moments after he was released on February 11.

“He suffered major head injuries and scans reveal a haematoma (a solid swelling of clotted blood)…efforts are now being made to have him flown to Martinique,” he told the court.

The two men have been remanded in custody until February 18, 2016 when medical evidence will be revealed by the prosecution and the court will then make a determination for bail.

Jules was severely beaten on Church Street in Roseau by several men who inflicted numerous and serious injuries to his upper body using a hammer and a rock weighing over 15 pounds.

A second police officer Patrickson Esprit also sustained an injury while on duty during the just concluded Carnival street jump up.

The attack on the officers has been condemned by National Security Minister, Rayburn Blackmoore and Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit.

If it’s was the police that beat a civilian like that, there would be a lot to say. Now it’s the other way around, we all need to speak up against such brutal crimes. These crimes should not be tolerate regard of who is committing them or who is on the receiving end. Dominica let us all stand up against such behaviors. High Five to the people who step in to rescue to officer.

My prayers go out to the Officer and his family.

Again a further argument for having a hospital with all latest equipment and staff to operate them. Surely when all is weighed up it is probably costing the country more to airlift patients and families, as well as pay for treatment.

Being a police officer overseas, it hurts me to read this, in my force these guys would have been patient in the I.C.U after and if they recover, they would be remanded and the case would proceed, you don’t put your hands on a law enforcement officer, that’s madness, I guess da officers getting soft.

The Law and their defense attorneys have been lenient with them by also requesting bail and acquittal. The authorities must take a good look at granting bail to these criminals. They should be incarcerated and not walking the streets.
Law-abiding Dominicans must be protected. I have not seen these authorities doing anything to protect them. The criminals get away with too much. I hope this time something will be done and they will receive the full extent of the Law and sentence..

You all allowed crime to escalate and as long as it was amongst people and not the police, it was ok right? Police don’t do their jobs in this country. There’s been fights at events with police less than 20 yards away and in uniform. Heard them saying “me leave right there and go over there behind a fight?” That’s our police? In the words of Malcolm X, “your chickens have come home to roost”. My regards to the family and the officers involved along with everyone else affected over the carnival period. I keep calling for uniformed police patrols on this island, in every community and on every beach and tourist attraction. Maybe this is something to kick off it off. We have enough police in Dca to do that. Instead they cooking food and drinking rum all day with the criminals they’re meant to investigate. Police getting fat on Dominicans for sleeping and eating all day. Not even the phones they’re bothered to answer. Criminals know they can “literally” get away with murder in…

The New Freedom Party has issued a strong statement of condemnation in the attack on police officer Wilburton Jules. We comfort his loved ones and pray for his speedy recovery. This attack on a member of our security forces is a symptom of the rampant violence which undermines the safety and security of every single Dominican.

We commend the speedy action by the Government, Magistrate Michael Bruney and Prosecutor Inspector Michael Laudat. We expect this assault to be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law provided by our Constitution.

  18. February 12, 2016

To read more of the details these men inflicted upon the two police officers is absolutely horrifying, especially what Officer Jules endured.

This is nothing less than attempted murder. I hope the prosecution will go for the maximum charge, and the judge will hand down the maximum verdict and punishment. An attack on an officer of the law is an assault on the nation, its constitution, and flag. Forgive me if you think I am over reacting and being extreme. But I believe only the lowest of men would attack an officer of the law. According to what we are told in Romans 13:1-4 a police officer is a “minister of God” and must be honored as such.

I invite Christian readers to join me in praying for both officers. Mr. Jules is obviously most at risk. Let us intercede for God to intervene and show himself strong as the Great Healer.

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.

Mr Jules sir it is soooo unfortunate that this happened to you. My continuous prayers are with you and even though I don’t know you personally my heart goes out to you and your loved ones. I really hope that you will have a FULL recovery. I place your precious life in the hands of the almighty God and trust that he will preserve your mind and body. Amen.

On another note: WHY ARE POLICE OFFICERS ALLOWED TO PATROL BY THEMSELVES?

Each police officer should have a partner AT ALL TIMES! And during Carnival patrolling they should be in pairs and groups ( 2 or 3 men together).

When I heard that this man was patrolling alone I was stunned. I didn’t know that this kind of nonsense still existed.

WAKE UP police force administrators! WAKE UP! Thosewho work under you must do the dirty work and put their lives on the line every day. Put WISE principles in place to keep your police officers safe or at least , safer.

Patrol with partners, teach them to use certain weapons then ARM…

Fellow Dominicans, please pray, pray, pray! Dominica is in dire need of fervent prayers and to eradicate these evil, criminal elements from your society.
We who reside abroad will join you in praying at every moment we possibly could.
May God bless you and prod you on to continue praying for your country, for other nationals and yes, police enforcement. Everyone needs our prayers, as much as we need each others’ prayers.
Daily, in all D/can churches, prayers must be said for Dominica, the government and police enforcement of all.
God bless Dominica and restore it to what it once was, free of such types of criminal elements.

Very sad to know what occurred to this police officer. They must have had something against him and targeted him. They are lawless characters who have no fear for the Law.
They carried weapons which were prohibited in the bands or near them.
Attempted murder? NO BAIL for them who especially attack police officers! These men have no respect for the Law and for police officers. Keep them incarcerated until their Court case. They have forfeited their rights and are not worthy of being out in public.
As for their attorneys who will defend them, please do not let us hear you say: “They are first-time offenders and they did not waste the Court’s time.” This is a foolish statement which should be struck out of the books. It is high time to eliminate it.
I pray and hope that God will assist and heal this officer in time.

Pipirit, whether on a lone patrol or patrol in pairs, this has no right to happen to a police officer, especially one known of upstanding and fair character. Like I said earlier, I do not condone law enforcemment officers who assume the roles of judge, jury, and executioner. Any officer, whether on duty or off duty has a right to approach a misbehaving group and request that they stop. This is up to his/her discretion. With the next step, attempting to using physical means – arrest, detention, search, etc., it should only be done when back up is near and/or in squads/pairs.

Remember Our Lord Jesus Christ’s words: “Vengeance is Mine! I will repay.!
Only this morning at 6:00 am, there was a program on the US Catholic Radio of various Sermons which are repeated. This is a new program which commenced on Monday.
I happened to be up and listened to it. Ironical, the Sermon was about Judgment Day, the Second Judgment of all nations and people. I was sorry I was not able to tape it and then make copies and give to relatives/friends and whoever else I communicate with.
I can tell you hearing it, the seriousness of it, I thought, if everyone hears it (all of us) we would do our utmost not to sin in any way. It is a great reminder of loving God, others and His judgment which no one will escape from and that we cannot take Him for granted nor is He deceived.
I always say, it is better to do good, to treat each other with kindness than bad; far better. These men will not escape. After the D/ca Law deals with them, later will be God’s judgment.

      Mr. pooshoompeng

I myself don’t know what the heaven you talking about there when you say “the universe has a way of balancing itself”

Time and time again we see good people suffering while bad people never get punished or get a slap on the wrist.

The universe does not always balance itself. But luckily we humans, who are part of the universe, have intelligence to help the universe do the balancing.

Lets create systems that support our judicial institution and get scumbags like these cop assulters OFF the streets.

The universe is not supposed to do that for us, that is OUR job: To protect those who uphold our societal institutions. Bring back the death penalty. Start enforcing harsher laws and start arming our police officers..

Now criminals realize that they can even beat the protectors: What do you think they will do to the mere citizens who are not carrying a badge…Thank God I don’t intend to bring any kids into this world. We must GET SERIOUS FAST!

In Canada they and their family will sue the police as if they have more rights than the police and victims.
There is a case before the Toronto Court which will soon be wrapped up. A police officer shot a young man who died.
First he had a knife and exposed himself on a public bus, causing terrified passengers to evacuate it. He stood at the front of the bus with the knife. The police told him to drop it. He refused and then he was shot. We are waiting to hear the police officer’s sentence. The poor man.
It was stated that this young man had ingested illegal drugs prior to this incident but he was alert.
I heard through the Toronto Media that a US police officer sued a teenaged-criminal. The police is traumatized; words to that effect. You must have heard of it. This is also to teach criminals a lesson.
It is high time the democratic Law of the land give those criminals exactly what they deserve. I have no empathy for them. They are heartless people.

This one does not sound as a smart D/can. I hope he/she is not someone I know or even the family. He would not try to pull this fast one on me. He would get the end of the stick from me, so-to-speak.
I listen to/view the News. I know what is occurring in Canada especially in Toronto.
The police must defend themselves against those thugs.
A few days ago I saw a police officer. Teasing, I said, “Officer, are you looking for me?”   I told him when criminals are caught they should not be out on the streets; not bailed; consider law-abiding people, that the government should build a special detention center for them until their case is called.
This p.m. I saw two more who were on patrol. I said to them, happy to see you. A (white) young woman was talking to them. I heard her make a statement. I told her “Do not swear in front of the police and have respect for them.” The police know the criminals who are known to them.

I think you should just refrain from saying anything that will make you sound more stupid. The officer tried to help a young lady that was getting beaten by some men. If he passed straight and let them burst her *** you all would have said the police didn’t do anything…..so please…. If u can’t say anything good…. Shut up….. Just shut it….

It depends who you are and the type of mentality you have. Not all of us in Canada agree with you. Speak for yourself which is why you got many thumbs down.
We do know that some immigrants are drug addicts and pushers and commit other crimes. These hate the police. Are you one of them?
Need I inform you that the police have a job to do and it is extremely dangerous? Their life is also at stake. It may be time that you learn discipline and respect for our police enforcement.
When I came to Toronto, the first dead person I saw was a Barbadian police officer who was shot. A friend who worked with his wife invited me to go to the funeral parlor to pay our respects. This was a sad occasion which had an effect on me.
A few years ago I heard a little so-called black boy say evil things about the police. I gave him a good lecture. I hope he is not involved in crimes and/or is still alive.

It is true that in Canada’s largest cities the police are totally out of control and will hurt and kill and never be punished for it, BUT that does in any way excuse or justify what happened here. Nobody wants anarchy, we all want a good safe environment for our families to live in, in Canada and in Dominica. I hope that this officer makes a full recovery and that the individuals responsible for this inexcusable act of violence are found, prosecuted and duly punished. The bigger question that begs to be asked is… Why didn’t the bystanders intervene to help this officer????? Clearly this was obscene violence that certainly can not be justified or tolerated in civil society. Very saddening.

“Why didn’t bystanders intervene to help this officer?” Were bystanders present?

I have asked this question myself again and again in other cases.

If there were bystanders It says more about them than anything else that may be uncovered in the investigation.

The Bible says “Therefore to him that knows to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17)

We must grow to the place as a society where people know an offence against one is an offence against all. If people understood we have each others back there would certainly be less crime of this nature.

Personally, I believe bystanders who did nothing should be punished along with the offenders.
There should be a charge that suits them. Now go ahead and give me thumbs down. Type in your damning comments against me.

        Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.

The police have rights too. Many have been killed and also injured. In this era, their job is more difficult and dangerous
I reside here and I have had no problems whatsoever with the police; nor do my family and friends.
These days there are too many criminals around. If people conduct themselves as law-abiding citizens they will live accordingly.
If they also mind their personal business they will not get into trouble with anyone; likewise if they also respect others and their due rights and dignity
When suspects/criminals are apprehended and are asked to stop, they try to run away and even shoot the police.
My parents brought me up with discipline and respect. I accord others the same and live accordingly.
I am on the side of the Police; not the criminals.
On the News, a 27 year-old police officer answered to a domestic problem call in Quebec. He was shot dead. His partner is injured. Later, the perpetrator appeared to have committed suicide in the house.
