U.S. Embassy Bridgetown hosts active shooter training in Dominica

Deputy Chief of Police of the city of Aurora, Colorado, Paul O’Keefe (standing) in session with participants in Dominica

The U.S. Embassy, hosted by Ross University, conducted active shooter training in Dominica for members of the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force, medical services personnel, and staff of Ross University on June 21.

The training was organized by the Embassy’s Regional Security Office and facilitated by Deputy Chief of Police of the city of Aurora, Colorado, Paul O’Keefe. O’Keefe was the on-scene commander during the 2012 Aurora movie theater shooting where a single shooter opened fire in a crowded movie theater killing 12 and injuring 70. O’Keefe now uses his experience to train others in responding to these types of incidents.

One of the primary goals of the training was to gather stakeholders together in one place to discuss coordination, and other logistical and technical requirements, in the event that an active shooter incident took place on the island.

U.S. Ambassador to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and the OECS, Linda Taglialatela commented on the training, “We’re pleased to have brought an expert like Deputy Chief O’Keefe to Dominica, and we remain committed to working with our partner nations in the region on strengthening security for continued citizen safety.”

The active shooter training is also taking place in Grenada and Barbados.

This is an excellent and necessary training especially in our times. They must be quick to respond to “active shooters”. The latter is placing it diplomatically.
Dominica may be a small country. The possibility must not be ignored nor downplayed. People travel all over the world and in Dominica, also for higher education. Who knows who they are and what they did prior to arriving in Dominica? Take no chances. The saying: Who knows what lurks in the heart of man/woman?”

Idiot, didn’t you see it say “press release.”

Furthermore the article you cited from the US embassy website and said the training will take place in Dominica next week.

Furthermore, the article also said the training took place on June 21….today is June 22.

So what is wrong with the article….where is the error in the article? Please point it out for other readers like me.

Apparently the embassy is doing the training in different islands and is using the same template in their press releases.

Dorival John, don’t try to be disrespectful here. If you need clarity on something you can simply ask a question. Ignorance is bliss. The person who put this article together knows exactly what I am talking about. I am well aware and was part of this exercise to know who planned the exercise. Anyone who was part of the exercise who read your comment would say that you are the idiot.

My point here is that, if you are keeping the public informed then you should gather the correct information from the horses mouth by means of interviews and not copy and paste information from other websites which may not necessarily provide the correct information for the story which is being covered.

The US embassy website stated that the two training sessions in Barbados was organized by the embassy regional security office. This was not the case in Dominica.

Now you have a clearer understanding of where I’m coming from, sit down! shut up! and keep quiet!

While the Chinese are funding infrastructure programs, the US talks about how to shoot back in a crowded cinema. They keep going into countries to lecture people when they have no understanding about the local culture. They keep making that mistake over and over.

We may have some crazy people walking around Roseau. What we don’t have is a bunch of psychologically disturbed people running around with guns as is too often the case in the US.

We need funding to build bridges and roads, not how to suppress gunfire in a theatre.

I could understand where you coming from because the way the article was put together it made it seems like it was Embassy putting everything together for the c/bean schools. There was no mention of the US Based Medical School (Ross University) actually putting together the Active Shooter drill because of it\’s US based population. Hope you getting the drift. So though there may not be, as you stated, psychologically disturbed people running around with guns, in DA, u must look at the bigger picture and remember that the population at Ross is 90% US citizens. Who are the main target for terrorist attack these day? We must start thinking out of the box people.

      • zandoli
        June 22, 2017

Despite what you may want to believe from listening to CNN and the other US networks, the main targets of terrorist attacks are Arabs, Afghans, Pakistanis, Nigerians etc. They are certainly not American.

“Alergic”, I agree with “Zandoli” 101%. America has closed shop on any developmental assistance to us. They only provide such assistance in an attempt to prepare us for social unrest – in its varied forms. assistance to the police, guns and Ammo, marijuana eradication etc. no social development assistance. Compare America’s assistance to us in the last 20 years to that of our friends, the People’s Republic of China in the last 13 years. Chinese have given us training for our youths, infrastructural development, assistance following emergencies, housing, support to law enforcement and the long list goes on with no end. In all this we have people in Dominica who side with America to put pressure on Dominica for its growing relationship with America. Shame on America and shame on these Dominicans. I do not necessarily mean you “Alergic”

Understand your point but it sounds like the school may have been responsible for hosting or organize the drill.
Is’nt the school American. If the answer is yes then they can invite whom ever they want to train there security staff. If it was done for Dominica police force then that’s another issue.
Infrastructure funding will help no doubt but you have to provide access to your island and also base on past record funds have not been used for what it was intended.
For example you give a guy $500 to fix his roof two years later he ask for another $500 to fix the same roof won’t you question what he did with the first $500. For years Dominica gets international help but yet the same issues remain. I was born in the 60’s and have been hearing about international airport

‘Shooter Training’ is this all the US government has to offer developing countries? And then they question why our countries are building alliances with other world powers such as China.

Our country is seriously impacted by the effects of Climate Change. We are devastated by the frequent and more intense storms. Weather patterns are changing inexplicably. We are losing our coast line all because of Climate Change. America which is a major contributor to Climate Change, does not beleive Climate Change is a reality. So all assistance that was pledged by America to support programs at mitigating the impacts of Climate Change on small countries like Dominica in particular has come to an end. Thanks to Donald Trump. China conversely has come to terms with its own mistakes regarding Climate Change and are supporting international efforts to combat Climate Change. They have pledged to provide real assistance not only on a multi-lateral level (UN) but importantly on a bi-lateral level (country to country). America not in that. This gun related activity is what they are promoting. Shame America!!!

        June 23, 2017

Seriously? Training persons to respond in the event of a scenario like the \’2012 Aurora movie theater shooting\’ is considered promoting gun related activity? smh. I get all what you guys are saying, trust me. However, all that aside, think about the effects on the country if, God Forbid, something like that were to happen at Ross and especially if there is a mass casualty because of the inability to respond properly. Do your research and see how much that university (pro America or not) contributes to Dominica\’s economy.

So tell me, all Dominicans know to do here is fight against everything? Jeeeez! Is like some of allu live for that we. Is like that is allu high man. God help us all!

I can teach you how to kill and oppress, i can teach you how you can be a despot, you need military hardware? i will give, you need new roads? i don’t do that ,new bridges? no way, if you refuse to tow my line, you will be sanctioned and put in your place, overthrow or otherwise, its like a thin line between love and hate, where most of the aid given ,is military for police and militia, to be used against the people. I will be rebuked by the pro-American mind-set in DOMINICA, for my sentiments, but history is always the best teacher.Grenada, is a clear example, being a growing economy in pre USA invasion to destitution presently, From the end of Slavery, to colonialism, neo colonialism and presently imperialism, the USA have never helped any of these island nations, their state policy is keep them as beggar nations, to be used strategically. The DEVIL HAVE HIS/HER FRIENDS.Bob D.

Yeah tell that to the hundreds of dominicans employed at Ross. I wish instead of trying to give us top tier training from seasoned professionals to protect their own people they would just pull their institution out of a country that has such lax security it makes it a perfect opportunity for a terrorist attack. Hell who knows all now couple ISIS fighters are going through “due dilligence” to get their hands on our passports so they can come here…

Boss I could shake your big toe. Unfortunately people like us are in the minority and the vast majority of our fellow citizens and black brethren are like sheep still living in mental slavery looking for an American green card to be treated like third class citizens in a white man’s country, paying him taxes while having to ensure that they constantly are at their best behavior less a police over pull them over and shoot them just for being black. Really sad bro.

It’s so refreshing to see this type of training taking place on the island. It’s also refreshing to view a modern training facility on the island, capable of accommodating a large number of people comfortably, with all the modern accoutrements like smarts boards, instead of the usual Fort Young Hotel. Thank you US Embassy for this training.

      June 22, 2017

The thanks should really go out to the team at Ross University who worked tirelessly in collaboration with the Dominica Police Force and the Fire and Ambulance Services for weeks putting together this training exercise. There was a mock active shooter scenario where all above mentioned personnel responded and played their part as well as could be expected. What you are looking at now is the debrief after the exercise.

NOTE: This was broadcasted via the radio station prior to the exercise in an effort to inform people to avoid an unnecessary alarm.

      Kudos to all involved!!!

      June 22, 2017

We can do without that type of training. There is nothing altruistic above that “gift” from the US. Take a look at the aid they give. It also revolves around security which serves the US. There is nothing in it for us.

    • Huh?
      June 23, 2017

Sir, this is not a Dominican public training facility. This facility is on the Ross University campus and not usually available to the public.
