UPDATE: Man shot and killed in Portsmouth

Peters was shot and killed in Portsmouth

Police have launched an investigation into the shooting death of a man in Portsmouth on New Year’s Day.

Derek Peters was shot in the back of the neck and is Dominica’s first homicide for 2018.

One man is in police custody assisting in the investigations.

Police PRO, Inspector Pellam Jno Baptiste said the incident took place around 11:00 am on January 1, 2018.

He said Peters, of Sandwich Street in Portsmouth, sustained a gunshot wound in the back of the neck.

He was taken to the Reginald Fitzgerald Hospital in Portsmouth where he was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

A coroner’s inquest will be held and one man has been taken into custody in connection with the incident, Jno Baptiste said.

Time to clean up Possee. Since after Mr. Etienne was murdered in Posse Police cells and Carbon just throw police under the bus and jail them before investigation completed the place has become lawless. Police afraid to even talk tough in Possee much less to take arrest . These thugs run Posse and believe me as long as Carbon is police Chief these officers will be content with the salary with little work to show for it.

I feel safer walking down Lalay Coco in Grand Bay at midnight than walking in parts of Possie at midday. Go figure?. Drugs, guns and illegal activities coordinated by so called barons run Possie. Now the young men are paying for the fall out with their lives. Nou-fi-ni-bat under DLP and CDPF (Carbon Daniel Police Force). Welcome to the failed state run by the purple turtle gang.

Assertive as Donald Trump but Not Aggressive!

This stupid culture of black on black crime/homicide seems to have been imported from the US, where it is widespread. Come on Dominicans, we are better than that. We were once described as gentle people – and godfearing. Now we seem to have descended into base animalistic behaviour.
You have to wonder if black men are brainwashed to kill each other by mind-controlling scientists if not to get rid of them but at least to control them.
Mothers and fathers must concentrate their effort on rearing good citizens and our leaders must show zero tolerance for crime and anti-social behaviour. Education is vital.
We must not follow the US model. It is a dangerous and hell=bound one.

Let’s not be hypocritical here. we all know what’s going on in possie posse and keep it a secret. this gang bang situation started a few years back wi th a few that suffered the same fate like others and they didn’t learn. young guys playing gang star more coward than corward itself and losing their life for some low life dude claiming to be boss. when the crimebhappens he’s nowhere around. young men stop losing you all life and find something positive and say no to crime and protect the community not make it a wild wild west. shame. That need to stop and the parents who knows their kids are involved and have guns and listening to the low life dude let them know how to value their life. Don’t wait to Just bury

Life is short, shorter for others

Now I’m not from here, but I find it very safe even with the few crimes I have seen over the past few years

Don’t become a gun tooting island because it is too small here and then the population will decrease

We must remember the curse Skerit brought on this country. He declared this country lawless,no constitution and we are wondering what’s going on.
No other Dominican leader ever dreamed of uttering such nasty statement, but this moron wants to play as if Dominica is his private estate.
We’ve seen the fall of Sadam and company.

Ok going by your erroneous and asinine logics. When Lenox called you all women prostitutes that is why most of you all are having babies out of wedlock

And when he said that the chief of police can’t tell him what to do… that is why so many of our young men smoke pot and drop out of high school

Why allu acting like murders can happen anywhere else but not Dominica? I’m mean seriously. I not condoning the violence but all this phony outrage is getting tired.
Yes, people do get robbed and killed in Dominica. Yes people get upset too, and yes some of them have weapons and willing to use it. Allu better watch how allu talking to man. Too much big talk nowadays, u doh know what the next man holding camem.

    • January 2, 2018

I am happy that you commented the way you did since this is a major part of the problem. Society has become too casual about criminality to the point where it is even condoned and criminals become heroes. However, we need to rearrange things. Always remember it is always fine until it strikes home. My condolences to the family, I know the mother very well. She is a family friend, and I also bought fish from the guy and his dad a few times when I am home.

Most of the young guys getting murdered or involved in murder have this hand sign in their pics…is this a devilish symbol of some kind? I told the young men in my life do not even make that sign in their pics to send for me. I not in that.

I agree with you 100%, I even see people have their little 4 year olds doing that. I’m not saying it’s the “devil symbol”, but im sure it has gang and “bad man” roots hence why i’d never pose for a pic like that. And another one that pisses me off. Is that symbol on one hand and a plastic cup in the other.

    January 1, 2018

Oh my God! What is happening in Dominica these days, especially in Portsmouth, the 2nd town and potato garden of the DLP government? Hon. Ian Douglas, during the 2014 elections you rightly referred to possie as the jaden patat of the dlp but sir what are you doing to ensure you potato garden yields good potato beyond election time? All of the crimes and violence show poor leadership on your side and on the dlp. It seems that the potato garden is abandoned a day after election and thorns and weed evil weed taking over till next election.

What a way to start 2018. smh for my country. We too small for this and no need to even start comparing Dominica with other countries. We are well known for our friendliness. Not for killing people

    • anonymous2
      January 3, 2018

Where do Dominicans get the idea that they are so friendly? I have never seen this friendliness unless they are looking for money in somebody’s pocket and I think that a lot of people inside and outside of Dominica would agree. When the people in DA arev honest and truly friendly, that means to each other first……….. then they can call this a friendly island. Right now, it is more of a hostile island, even more so since Maria..

Latin America and the Caribbean have become the world’s most murderous regions per capita. Something has gone drastically wrong with our lifestyle, our people, our governance. Our discourse and interaction with each other is too overly aggressive. There are too much hatred and jealousy and too little love and empathy. Society is splintered into too many fractions ( political, religious, social, family). Sadly, there is no credible effort to depart from our past transgressions and live a more wholesome lifestyle. 2018 portends to be another very challenging year economically, politically and socially. Our standard of living is rapidly diminishing. Positive changes in governance, in attitude and in love for country are urgently needed.

    • January 2, 2018

You could not have said it better. I read and pondered as to what I could add to compliment this piece and I could come up with nothing. Essentially we have lost our humanity all in the quest for economic gain. A very sad state indeed.

Was this murder climate resilient too? Just asking because it seems that according to those red ministers everything that’s happening in Dominica these days is a step towards the first climate resilient country in the world. I hope the murderer gets some good climate resilient jail time too in order to reflect on his non-climate resilient sins
