‘Weekend smokes’ lands teen in court

A 19-year-old man from Pottersville told a magistrate’s court that he did not intent to traffic the 25 grams of cannabis he was caught with in his community on Thursday.

Jacob Daniel, a repeat offender, appeared before Magistrate Ossie Lewis today and pleaded guilty to having the said drugs on Potters Street.

“I wasn’t intending to traffic, that’s my smokes for the weekend,” he told Magistrate Lewis.

The defendant had been apprehended by police, who were on mobile patrol in the said area at about 9:50 p.m. He was approached when a strong scent of cannabis was noticed in the area he was located.

“I had just, just come out and buy it, Your Honor,” he assured.

Daniel was fined $1,000 which is to be paid by January 15, 2012 or he spends 10 weeks in prison.

He was advised to stay away from illegal substances and from committing any other offense as he was building a criminal record for himself.

I do not believe that we should be sending our young people to jail for small quantities of cannabis. Change the cannabis laws. Too many young men are being destroyed by jail..

True, we can ask why they don’t stay away from drugs. But there are many other laws being broken that people not getting punished for. Like what? Buggery is a crime. You see any gay men being arrested? Opening your business on Sunday is a crime. You see any owner being arrested? Overtaking under the Canefield cliff is not allowed. Many overtake without getting a ticket. Lawyers, doctors, all of them taking their weed. You see them getting arrested?

Leave them yout man alone!!! Continue to educate against drug TRAFFICKING but don’t jail the youth for a cigarette.
