Weekes commends public for compliance during Independence season

Police PRO and Prosecutor Claude Weekes

Save a few minor incidents, there was great compliance with the law over the Independence holidays.

This is according to Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Claude Weekes who has expressed gratitude to the Dominican populace for their cooperation with police during the season.

He urged however, that this behaviour be maintained throughout the upcoming Christmas and Carnival celebrations.

Speaking with Dominica News Online, Weekes also commended the police who he believes did a “fairly reasonable job” in securing the nation during the festivities.

“It just shows that we can do it as a nation, as a people. The issue of security is not only for the police but also for the public. In other words, each citizen has a responsibility for his or her security as well…,” he stated.

“We must not only exude or exercise that kind of behaviour only during Independence, but here it is Christmas is coming pretty soon, Carnival is coming so we are asking for that to be sustained and to be consistent throughout. But nevertheless, we will not be complacent as police to say well, this has happened we will let down our guard. I think it has to be sustained; we will continue to do it because we have that mandate to serve the public,” he told DNO.

He lauded an increased police presence at activities and in the out districts over the holidays. This, he is convinced, also helped minimize crime.

“Definitely we had a conspicuous police presence in all of the activities and even while those activities were going on there were also police on the outskirts and all the various districts and so on,” he said.

He reiterated: “Again we really have to thank the public for their compliance and for working together with the police…I think it was a good demonstration of our hospitality…”
