Weekes denies man died after police chase

Weekes

Police have refuted reports that a man has died in Grand Bay after a police chase.

Marpin TV reported last night the individual, whose name has not been disclosed, jumped over a cliff because he was being chased by the police.

But Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Claude Weekes disclosed on a DBS radio program this afternoon the man in question is alive and is in hospital.

“But he is not dead,” he confirmed.

Weekes further revealed that the man, who at the time had in his possession a bag containing illegal items, may have thought police were trying to capture him when he leaped into a precipice. He suffered injuries as a result.

Weekes also called on local media to confirm with the police before broadcasting such reports to the public.

“You cannot blame people from stating the man is dead when you have a news agency saying he is dead,” Weekes said on a creole program.

when the police don’t answer their phone when the media calls then i guess we have to say unconfirmed reports and that is exactly what marpin said unconfirmed reports. so i guess the PRO must be careful when he says the media must contact him first because they never know nothing that happen.

So Marpin made a mistake…like its unprecendented???? Don’t be acting like no other medium has made errors, including this one right here.

They will learn from the mistake and move on. Case closed.

Don’t you people have anything to talk about. If the man want to kill himself that is his problem. The police does not have anything to do with that. Marpin is setting themselves up for a lawsuit. I can see it coming.

Marpin has become very negative in their news reporting. I have even stopped watching Marpin news. I notice they thrive on negativity always highlighting “bad” things. Marpin needs to be more balanced and factual in their reporting. DOnt be so desperate to report something bad that you actually lying just to make a story.

Marpin is a typical news organization; they make news to highlight the company in other to get advertisments.

Lets say he was dead, how would that be the fault of the police even if they were chasing him? You are not suppose to run from the police so if you jump a cliff thats your responsibility.

I am sure marpin’s employees know the process necessary to go through before putting out a news item, so there is no excuse. This is just another example of how our society is smitten by gossip. While we are on the media let me say that there is alot of work to be done. You listen to some programs and it is clear that the host did not research and is totally ignorant of the facts related to the matter at hand. However, what is most disgusting to me is to hear reporters and presenters concentrate on how their voices sound and totally ignore correct pronounciation of words. there is one young lady on a parrticular radio stations doing the news updates who has clearly fabricated a voice but mispronounce every other word. Where are the bosses?

    • Bayside
      February 17, 2011

Wonder which station is that? I know there’s one lady on a particular local station that sounds “real off” when she reads whether its news or announcements, even commercials too!

Always trying to put politics in everything.. TYPICAL DOMINICAN. Stick to the issue being discussed. People like u have a personal vendetta against the PM and the labor party that it is clouding your mind and the ability to think straight. Com’n.. Tell me what contribution are you making towards dominica? do you invest in the economy? i’m sure not a dog gone thing but yet still allu seat behind the computers and write trashy comments and bash the Gov’t. That comment u made had no place in this article, i wish the admin would start deleteing comments that don’t have nothing to do with the main topic. sotttt

mr weeks, u seem to be a good man, a willing and able police officer. the police force needs more like you. but a liittle less commentaries and more results/wins. u are beginning to sound like jeff charles and a yelling v-eight. where is the escaped prisoner deemed dangerous from bells, and who stashed him out of the isylum without a trace? who is selling out police exercises and cashing in big bucks? who is manning the wesley/marigot/castle bruce bays esp at nites?? who is running the developing prostitution rings in checkhall/massacre and why are the high tech cameras and other equipments for filming the dirty acts bypass customs? who are all these foreigners were they all legally processed? who burnt the attorney’s house and torched the police officer”s own? who killed ex commissioner peirre” daughter and still laughing at the investigator? are these cases closed? in the mean time i applaud you for protecting your fellow officers.but in the mean time, mr weeks lets’, come up with some results/win. less commentaries and more work.

That’s all some of you idiots can do BLAME, BLAME, BLAME. Get a life!!! The issue here is the irresponsibilty of the media in Dominica (particularly MARPIN) in doing a professional job, instead of constamtly trying to make the government, its institutions and Dominica look bad. No amount of barking by the likes of you can run away from that!

As usual, our media personnel do not do any investigative journalism. They simply report what was said to them or what they heard from another media house. The only real journalist there is on the island is Lenox Linton, but he is too one sided with his reporting

    • Devoted Dominican.
      February 16, 2011

you brainless minded fool. How could you classify lennox Linton as being the only real journalist, then in the same breath to say that, (BUT HE IS TOO ONE SIDED IN HIS REPORTING.) Lennox reports poison, hatred and toxic lies over the air. And there are too many fools like you who puts him on a pedestal which makes him continue to do the same thing every day.

    • ... pensive
      February 15, 2011

Soooo… the police had a strategic planning meeting where they decided that this particular fellow had to go. And how could they effectively eradicate society of this particular man.. Yes.. “We will chase him, and he will do what any other rational human being would do in that situation… Jump off a cliff, and, further, we know know, that if any normal human being jumps off that particular cliff, he is sure to die.”

Steupes… LOL.. a force some Dominicans does make me vex.

maybe the chased him, maybe they didn’t.. but the chased him SO HE COULD KILL HIMSELF?? Sakway Zeh ZEH!!

this incidence just emphasis the fact that our media houses are not professionals and credible. I do suggest that the relatives sue marpin for this unnecessary stress and use the money to fly the guy to martinique for further medical attention. The family do not need an apology Marpin, they need cash……. what you all did last night was inexcusable and wicked. Only in Dominica only in Dominica boy media houses broad cast roro beth, instead of facts. Shame on you marpin.. you should have left that for m….. in the m………

    February 15, 2011

Is this irresponsibility on the part of this media house? Are we to question every other news release coming from this media house as well as others.

Such irresponsibility is not limited only to this media house, but a certain Radio Station who constantly claim that they have the truth and the facts and that it is the “mother of all truth”.

Case in point, the PM states that General Election will be held in 2014, yet some irresponsible individual at that Radio Station refutes that statement, claiming that it has the real date, which will be in March 2011. Does this Radio Station have the information the PM does’nt have. Isn’t that irresponsible reporting and bordering on ridiculous?

Thanks Mr. Weekes for clearing the air and bringing that media house to shame.
