UPDATE: Western Union robbed

Authorities at the scene of the incident

Western Union services had to be shifted temporarily to Canefield, after its Hanover Street business place in Roseau was robbed earlier Thursday.

The Western Union office in Dominica is managed by HHV Whitchurch and Company Limited.

The company’s managing director Gerry Aird told Dominica News Online that two female Western Union employees were preparing for the day’s work at about 7:30 Thursday morning when two masked men forced their way into the building on Hanover Street.

Aird said the two men, one of whom was armed with a gun, roughed up the two female employees and also accosted another male employee who walked in during the robbery, before making off with “quite a bit of money”.

He couldn’t say exactly how much money was taken.

The Managing Director said the Hanover Street Western Union operation had to be moved to Canefield for the day because the incident left staff traumatized.

One of the female employees, who is pregnant, was taken to hospital for observation.

Gerry Aird said he was pleased that the police were on the scene very quickly, and are investigating the matter.

The businessman said Thursday’s development was a very worrying one that makes a case for putting in place more stringent security measures.

He told DNO those measures should include the introduction of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras to make it easier to nab would-be thieves.

To a certain extent those Dominican thieves appear to be somewhat worst than those in other countries and are becoming more brazen and desperate. They wait when the employees open the business or are leaving work to ply their evil trade of theft.
Considering this, a security service should be employed/contracted. Security guards must obviously be properly trained. While on the job they should always be alert. They should also be equipped with a gun and ever ready to use it if need be.
A turnstile which detects metal should be installed. This should deter them.
When going to the bank, be secretive about it. Devise a plan that the thieves will not be aware of it. I will not make this any more explicit so as to give thieves wise information.
In addition, where the employees conduct business, the area should be cordoned off with protective, shatter-proof glass and only a small area left open in order to speak to the customers.
Precaution is better than cure. Spend some money to protect your property. In the long run you will benefit from it.
Accept this advice and do something about protecting your premises, your financial property and employees.

Why should a place that deals and transfers LARGE sums of money have security when the money moves? That’s discriminating against thieves and robbers. Management of those places need not think and be proactive.

I agree that unemployment can lead people who are desperate into such activities. However I am curious as to whether those committing this rash of robberies are doing so because they completed high school and made every attempt to get a job but were unsuccessful and now find themselves with a family to support and really have no alternative but get involved in such activities. Though my curiosity has not been satisfied I do however suspect these are people who drop out of school, have an expensive drug habit that they must feed daily, and just think they are entitled and do not want to work. Active Career Counselling Officers, mental health support, a more visible police presence throughout communities and more stringent punishments for such crimes, would significantly reduce such activities.

That was a very well put together comment. To add to your views which I share completely, I think that it is time that these crimes be stopped. The people doing these crimes need to be made an example of to further deter others who see them as heroes and endeavor to be like them. Serious public embarrassment needs to be done and some strict punishment.

I may be wrong, but for some reason I smell a “Rat” on this one. Check this out right;, (1) two female employees, (2) early in the morningat the start of the shift, (3) male employee comes in after the females, (4) male employee was only accosted.

I think the male employee is involved in this somehow.

The price we pay for development. Wait a minute, what development? I don’t think that’s it. What we see here are the results of country that is decaying. Little by little, trickle by trickle, one mismanagement after another. What next people? Where next? Who next? When next? I can hardly ever remember a time seeing Dominica in such a state. Because these events are linked together with the state of the administration.

People people people…cameras can offer assistance in solving a crime like informing the public what the robbers were wearing or thrir height and built..but having a camera doesnt garantee that the robbers will be caught………..they lower their ball caps wear shades or glasses or even fake facial hair to make it difficult to identify them……..dont you guys watch American news and and other shows asking the public assistace in identifying people caught on cameras? And in alot of cases they remain unidentified…..I know that Dominica is a smaller place…so chances are……..however having a camera is no garantee

I agree we HAVE to be tough on crime. But most of the comments here are talking about treating a “symptom” as opposed to curing the “disease”. We are calling for stiffer penalties. Great! If we go that route, we will eventually find ourselves investing more in a prison system than on an education system. Let’s not be reactive but rather proactive! Go upstream and come up with a long term strategy to combat crime and violence in the country. Longer prison sentences will NOT solve the problem!

    • Trual
      February 3, 2012

How do you cure the disease? Don’t you have to rely on the symptom first of all to know what disease it is? Well you can put your boots and go upstream if you want and see what you get!

    This investigation should not die.

The financial intelligence task force should investigate that matter as well. The staff shall cooperate with the police and make available the names of all customers that transacted over the last 90 days whom management asked for source of funds and whose funds were returned.

Meanwhile all of Dominica should observe persons who are known to be unemployed but having an exceptional dam good time like money is no problem and do the right thing.

There is not enough stiff penalties, in Dominica, criminals walking the streets like they did not commit no crimes, people getting away with murder, literally and figuratively, and nothing is being done, criminals have guns, and security have none, what you expect, no jobs, people work for the same salary for years, yet cost of living is rising, every day, things go up but our salary remains stagnant, fustration in de place, I am not condoning that but more jobs and salary needs to be rivised, people salary needs to go up and cost of leaving down. The government needs to look into that, and train de police, and give the security “pepper spray, and a glock (gun)

People must learn to respect the property of others. If they continue in this state without repentance and returning the stolen goods that are especially not recovered and making restitution to appease God, a sure Hell awaits them. Think also on spiritual terms. God does not condone the actions of thieves and also those who harm others while committing a crime.

  62. February 2, 2012

In all these robberies, how many involve females? NONE. My point? A learned male Magistrate criticized the Mr. Dominica competition ( a positive action by 7 males) but i want to hear what is his view on all these robberies perpetuated by males Who will come before him for sentencing. He will tell them engage in positive actions. smh alas.

Was anyone injured? Hope not. Now to those of you who left Dominica decades ago, you expect it to remain the same in terms of crimes? Always blaming government for these acts. The only thing I believe government should be blamed for is the development that has taken place. These are crimes associated with the more developed countries that you all have run to.So stop painting Dominica as the worst of the bad. Good luck to the police and God bless Dominica..

most proprietors in Dominica only wants to increase thier profit margin. no consideration of reinvestment into thier business for security and incentives for workers. one man standing by a door watching cricket is not security for any place. they more like watchmen who sees nothing. also salaries are way too low for the magnitude of wok expected though a lot of us need to pull up our socks. we adopt all the wrong foreign styles.

    February 2, 2012

The Security Guards in Dominica needs police training and rubber bullets in their guns. They need to have a thief mentality to spot suspicious looking persons. And they need to be paid a decent salary to take on the responsibility of protecting peoples lives wherever they work and themselves too. Things are get aggressive and the mentality of the Security Guard Employers should also roll with the times. Give your employees a reason to want to come to work and not just “well I getting paid so is their problem kind of attitude”. Staff morale is quite low in all sectors of the work in Dominica.

Arm them so their ignorant can further abuse the power of wielding a deadly weapon and use it on you? Do you have any idea of the implications of arming security guards or even beat cops? That would be crazy, and reckless of us to do such. We already have a history of police and lately (security ) officers abusing these powers, and more so, we have information that the same persons who sign up to become “enforcers of the law” are the same ones who break it. Imaging further arming them with deadly weapons that they can use, and will be protected by their own. Many more will die. I recommend CCTV strategically placed everywhere in Roseau will full coverage of the entire area, and private businesses should use them inside and outside as well. That way we can can track which way they went and eventually they must have got into a vechile or a house. Dominica especially, Roseau is small enough to finance full CCTV monitoring, and there is no need for great staff, just a full bank of hard drives to store the information until needed. Would be good for monitoring reckless driving under the Canefield cliffs too. These darn drivers endangering MY life. I so hate it! Next level…. kidnapping… its only a matter of time!!!! They will start with the wealthy/prominent businessmen and women and their children, and so on. I am scared that we become another Trinidad.

I agree, it has been said that with development comes a rise in crime. it was about time these things start happening in D/ca. Gov dont understand what the people is going through, when a man cannot feed his children because of rising prices and one man gets a salary of $16 000.00 and others struggeling. so what do we expect…much worse i would guess.

        February 2, 2012

Masked bandits who rough up female employees who they already have at gunpoint are not likely to be just trying to feed their children. I could forgive someone robbing to feed their family, but I doubt that’s the case here. That kind of “man” (I use the term loosely) just seems to enjoy cruelty and power over others, and is the lowest of the low.
