All set for official opening of Independence celebrations

Cultural activities are common during the celebration of independence in Dominica

Exciting, vibrant and colorful are the words used by the country’s Chief Cultural Officer to describe the official opening of Dominica’s 34th Independence on Saturday.

Raymond Lawrence says everything is in place and Dominicans can expect a wonderful celebration.

The ceremony, to be held at the Old Mill Cultural Center, will begin with an opening prayer and will include speeches from various government ministers including Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

There will be a series of cultural presentations by groups and individuals, including Ophelia and Michelle Henderson, the Petite Savanne Cultural Group, Tradibelle among others.

Henderson says the kalinago will be doing a special presentation.

“We also hope to launch the 2012 Miss Wob Dwiyet contestants. They will be there making their first public appearance,” he said.

The official opening will be held from 5pm at the Old Mill Cultural Division.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Partnering for Progress and Development.”

The theme for this year’s celebration is indeed a catchy one! Partnering for progress and Development.
Partnering should in every sphere of life in Dominica: politically, socially, financially. Further, partnering can be in terms of religions coming together, communities united for a greater cause. Partnering seems to me a very rare and strange move in Dominica given the present state of affairs. To much fighting, ill willing, accusation, character assassination, and a whole barrage of gossip and putting down of folks from all circles. Partnering has nothing to do with the kind of division that exist amongst folks from all walks of life.

A closer look is to be taken at the defining or re defining the beliefs, practices, and institutions by which Dominicans find and express their common Identity! Culture to me is more than getting for a together for a short time during independence celebrations to perform. Its a way of life that has to do with great patriotism and a way of life that put Country first in all things!
The Partnering of folks can only happen when all those from various walks of life Put God and Country first! Progress and Development for all can only take place when Politicians, Religious and other leaders and citizens put country first lead by Almighty God.
The partnering process must never take place without the local folks who have the power to elect and reject governments. Let there be a culture of progress, excellence, patriotism, loyalty, honesty, industriousness, and virtuousness and the likes be a way of life now and forever! God bless Dominica! God bless our authentic Culture!
