“Oh no, it didn’t come as a surprise.”
The words of a beaming and obviously elated Lord Karessah after dethroning the mighty King Dice to win the 2015 calypso monarch title at Windsor Park Stadium early Sunday morning, February 15, 2015.
“After I sang the first song, I realize I could win the competition and I decided that for the second round I am going for it,” Karessah told Dominica News Online after the competition.
Lord Karessah, well known for his interesting and thought provoking performances and topical songs which he pens himself, produced compelling performances in both rounds to deprive th seven time monarch of his eighth crown.
His songs – Call Me Name and Flush It, had the enormous crowd on fire when he left the stage.
For his first song, Call Me Name, Karessah exited the stage in pampers and a grease laden head and notched it up in round two with his “Flush It” number.
He came dressed as a plumber, in overalls and helmet, emerging from one of the largest toilets ever seen in Dominica, and ended his performance with his both feet planted on the sides of the toilet bowl, and using his plumbing tools, unblocked the toilet, and worked feverishly to flush what represented human waste.
In his interview with the media moments after being crowned by Miss Dominica, Odessa Elie, the new monarch expressed his gratitude to his management team and Malcom Stephen and Sons and said there was a lot of hard work behind his victory.
“It was a lot of hard work and I think this is one of the biggest victories I have ever had in calypso,” the now three time winner, said.
He attributed his win for the most part, to his consistency in the competition and congratulated the other competitors.
Karessah will be returning to his educational studies in Australia soon and vowed to return in time to defend his crown.
Dice came in the first runner up position, followed by Daddy Chess and Jama B.
Other finalists were Superior Picky, Black Diamond, Sting Ray, De Professor, Boople and Bobb.
okay, so I just listened to Astro’s Flush it song! Two different songs, two different performances. On the other hand besides the commonality with the two words… What other prop was expected with a song like flush it or full of it? Seriously, this media thing is exposing the dunceness of these Dominicans. There are two many dunce people around on these social media.
De Karessa writes his own songs and is a very good writer at that. I do not think he would have had to listen to Astro’s song to come up with flush it. I can vouch that if we go back into Karessa’s files we will find that Full of it was penned a long time ago. Karessa has a very thick compilation of songs and can pull one out of archives at the drop of a dime. I find it very disrespectful of the masses to suggest that Karessa stole Astro’s song and presentation. At least give the man some respect.

Dice and Pat , there is a lot of room for improvement in presentation. Why would you want to repeat a presentation that the audience have seen many times before. That was really uncreative of both of you. Were you all asleep when you put the performance together? Additionally. please, tell me what each change of clothing represented because I certainly did not get it. Am still lost. Dice don’t you have a will of your own to say what you want or don’t want to perform? Hope you take this criticism positively.

I did not get to listen to the show so I can’t say who did well and who did bad, but from some of the so called Dice fans they claim he made mistakes and he still made 1st runner up, WOW this favoritism has to stop am tired of our craft just being enjoyed by us only while we listen to other people country music.
Dice is not a calypsonian!! He is an entertainer……He comes year after year with recycled lyrics and melodies…….the judges have woken up from their slumber. Only down hill for dice now.

So on social media and even on DNO people are blasting Dice and happy he lost the crown! Are we really serious? Can we just congratulate Karessa which is the point of the article? Also can we commend Dice for doing a good job? In other countries people support others to continue to win and do good and in Dominica we are doing the opposite. Karessa is great and I am happy he won but let’s face it Dice is the greatest calypsonian in Dominica’s history. Let us be positive and embrace what we have,let’s embrace talent, let’s embrace that he is doing something positive with his life and making use of a talent that he has been blessed with.
It is really disturbing that in a time with wars, hunger, crimes, poverty, hardship we are crying down our own brothers and sisters. These guys put in a good show and the best man won. Let’s not lose focus here.

How do you know when a person writes for themselves? Were you in the same writing room with them or going on hearsay. Many people thought that it Lugazz who wrote his song this year, but it was not him, go figure.
There are writers who don’t want to be named as well, so the credit passes on. What you see on stage is the final product and as such who the real writers are remains a speculative matter in many a case.
If only writers that sang calypso, the quality of presentation and rendition will drop as well since not everyone a blessed with a multiplicity of talents. Its a shame and also a double standard for Dominicans to appreciate pop music from abroad without questioning who wrote it, but when it comes to Dominican performances they want to get themselves tied up in knots over such trivialities.
There will always be disagreement from year to year on we who think deserves the crown; however, one thing is certain, Dominica calypso appears to be in a very good place at the moment with two very talented and extremely entertaining artists in the persons of Karessah and Dice leading the charge. The future also looks very exciting with likes of Black Diamond and several other promising youngsters coming on strong. With that being said, I truly believe that we, calypso loving Dominicans, will continue to be the undisputed winners.
first of all karessa did make an error and it was int eh start of verse 3 and it was not a big error…if the judges had to remove points it could only be in rendition cause he came to early…it did not affect his lyrics, melody or presentation. Karessa deserved that crow.n…dice did an excellent job with the man song…i dont understand why it was man to man to man..and not just man to man but whatever, however round 2 dice was off, he made a few blunders but apart from that he was off…dice knew proverbs was his strongest song so he maybe felt that after such a great performance in round 2 he did not need to perform as hard in round 2 that was his error…you cannot be complacent….i think daddy chess delivered both songs well…i felt jamma b had 2 good songs but felt that they wanted to place professor so they would leave him out but the judges saw it too…my order after watching the show was Karessa, Daddy Chess, Dice and Jamma b.
Marigot i agree and disagree because lastnite on DBS radio Cecil played Caressa’s song and there it was he made that mistake in the 3rd verse he played it over and over and he said that was too much of a big(one) mistake in a big competition he thinks the judges did not get . Can people not just accept that it is what it is and congratulate Karessah. Dice is great, but history will reveal that Karessah is also a great calypsonian. Congratulation Karessah, think you were the better performer on the night. I saw the glitch in the second verse, but you delivered. Dice was not as strong in his second song and presentation.

if you still vex that Lord Karessah won the crown, take my advice and FLUSH IT! lol The show was well judged up to the 4th position, cuz from where I was standing, I just dont know how Jamma B sneaked his way. Professor should have gotten 4th place, he earned it. Jamma B still sang ELECTORIAL and not ELECTORAL….then he ate some lines in his first song…the part about the New Yorka dn bajan route …..but, it is what it is …BIG UP Professr, good looking and talented chap…it’s a pity he so young….
It’s a shame how some people just hate dice for his God given talent if he made mistake and he didn’t get crown that’s ok but he is good at what he does and I still believe many have too much to say . Some of them don’t know a good calypso he had two good songs and carried them well compared to flush it please!!!!! Dice should continue the formulae he and Pat, Dice won the first round, I will give time that. He made mistakes in the third verse of his song and there was hiccup in his presentation. One the other hand Karessa was flawless, in both rounds. So Karessa earned the crown. With that been said I have only maintain that Karessa is the only threat to Dice. Dice has the best calypso voice. No body can handle a song like Dice but he messed up in the second round. also for those who said what Karessa is sing is none sense the great sand none sense , like Sparrow Saltfish and Congo man also obeah wedding , Blakey China man King funny, I think before we sound ignorant about comments in calypso please do your homework. Dice and Karessa are the two king DA will have if we don’t get our game up. I cannot map dice on any particular calypsonian of old. But give the man credit he has talent. But I say hard work will beat talent when talent does not work hard. Our calypsonians need to take their talent and the art form to the highest level.. Do you remember when Marshall Montano came to Dominica in the early 80’s singing the calypso “they say I too young to soca?’ Look where he took the art form…… After all these years are calypso still remained in Roseau, maybe Tasha P and Karessah will give it a trip out of Dominica.

dice was messed up by swinging stars and the others. Do u all know that dice’s props was disallowed last minute and he had to try and set up a prop for the second song in less than no time. according to the calypso association the stadium has rules so he could not use the prop he had. he was robbed. this was planned.

Say what all you want. The only way dice can lose is if he fumbles and that’s exactly what happened. No one can beat my king dice those other calypsonians just cannot comes in the man foot period.
Very difficult for Karessah to win under circumstances where a lot of people feel it rightfully should have gone to Dice again! Maybe that is the problem, they are both worthy performers but it could not been seen to give Dice top spot again. That is a pity because the best performer, like in athletics, should always win, even if it gets boring.
To all haters FLUSH IT. Dice is not calypso he can’t win every year. Respect Dicy you were good but Karessa was better. Let’s see what happens next year.
Some people seem to be celebrating that dice lost because they don’t like his lyrics. They don’t seem to recognize that dice and karessah are complaining about the same issues. Ministers on top of people’s daughters, corruption, victimization, morals and the people who turn a blind eye.
That’s why I said Dominicans do not take the time to listen to the messages of the songs because these men are spelling out the issues for the people to consider but they refuse.. Karessah have a right to FLUSH IT along with some of the people.
Dice has beaten Karessah about four times with his lyrics. He started his winning ways in 2004, 2005,2006. In 2007 he lost and placed 4th after Hunter, Sandy and Chess, . In 2008 he won again. He was away from the competition in 2009 and 2010. He returned in 2011 and Tasha P defeated both Karessah and himself with Dice 2nd and Karessah 3rd. Then he began his second triple run winning 2012, 2013, 2014. Since 2004 out of 9 times he competed he won 7 times with his type of lyrics. This is a stunning record of which we as Dominicans should hold him in high regard. Just like any champion anywhere in any activity there will be a bad day so what is this hurry to criticise the very same lyrics that has made him an icon? Envy perhaps or partisan politics?

I listened to the entire show and I believe the crown was not given to Dice for personal reasons. This in my opinion is just being bias. Karessa’s both songs made absolutely no sense to me. He may have gotten the crown but Dice is the true king. Keep the faith Dicey jah rule.

Your message is always the same with different wording.. You need to bring back calypso like in the days of rabbit. Solo and breaker.. This is what we want. Pointe Michel girls have the waist .. Tennis shoe tong. If you lash the cat, never hang your heart rabbit. Them kind of songs we want to hear to jump to the lavway.. .. Not politics, take off politics in kaiso, Sing about the ro ro, so much ro ro in da, instead this is what people want to jump and prance to.. Pat this is your homework for the years to come.. The show / production was definitely below Standard. The quality of songs and the competition was down; swinging stars payed poorly – the coordination that we expect was not crisp at all. The sound was poor and the calypsonians struggled to deliver their songs.
The judging was relatively fair but more so the result is good future competitions. Kudos to the professor – very promising young man and I am very elated by the gesture offered by Dice during professors second presentation. Thst was admirable . I believe that the fact that both songs were on th same theme and targeted the same person was a huge error and cost the professor a spot in the final 4. But he is young and growth will come. I am confident that his vocals will improve as well. Thumbs up to you young chap.

Congratulations to the King and all. I did not expect the professor to make it. Surprised he was in the semies. I recited the words of that talking parrot and sounded like him. Also gave it to a 10 year old with sinus problem to read and he sounded just like professor. It was like saying your ABC. It is still a big question why Beno and Checker did not make it pass the quarters when they had the melody and the other attributes..
Great! keep bashing a young man who won three Junior Monarchs and who came in and did a song big men were afraid to sing about facts, truth that people like you cannot accept. But the song created the most interest in the 2015 calypso compeititon no doubt. It even giot pat to fix Dice’s second song to react to it and to include lyrics about the writter in Boople’s song. Deal with that.

You cannot year in year out sing about leadership, corruption, ride the waves and think it will be for Skerrit alone.. Actually, I think Jama B had a well written an executed song with Roll de dice.. The issue we have is that most of our calypsonians have less than acceptable singing voices, so many times they cannot handle some good songs. Jay Dee had a good song also and gave his best effort to deal with the nuances of the song, but did not make it… Dice has the best voice by far. Some of the guys are off key. We need better singers. That should start from the Junior monarch.. I understand it’s fun for the kids, but we need students who can actually sing.. set standards, voice lessons, whatever it takes. Professor needs that to help him. Starquest and the Q talent show have proved that we have great local singing talent. That’s what eliminations should do.. screen out those who cannot sing…

Please! Caressah did not win dice. I attended the show and Dice was the winner. Dice had clarity , he performed and as it relates to lyrics , melody and rendition I mean king dice is up there. Well well again this result was just a matter of not giving dice the crown again- nothing to do with caressah outshining dice. Never! I mean when are we going to stop this nonsense and give Jack his lipstick and Jacqueline her lipstick- as Felix Henderson says. I mean so what if he wins 8 times- he worked hard for it- why give the crown to someone else just because you all feel so? Why? I have no issues with caressah but I will say that in Caressah’s heart he knows that Dice did a better job! It’s also an attack at Pat Aaron- who is a great writer. Interestingly a lot of attack was on dice and Pat on stage by other calypsonians and now even the judges!
Keep telling yourself that! Karessah Is better than Dice and we all know it! They stole his crown and gave it to dice one year but it was too glaring this time to try that. This year he proved that he was better than Dice AND Pat!

Professor got caught between two top writers and his writer had no business using the young man to expose the other, he was suppose to write a proper calypso for the young man, I knew that it was not going to take him any where, remember it was a similar situation that happen to Leona last year and what was the result she is hardly mentioned, I felt sorry for the Professor and he trying to intimidate DICE was bad it just didn’t have to come to that .

The songs that pat has written over the years about all kinds of things and on every one in Dominica supportive of the DLP can he prove the things he wrote? was he present when those things he claimed took place happened and did you ever came out in defence of the people he wrote on?NO!The lyrics in Professors songs actually took place and was shared by the people who were affected with Media houses ckeck DNO and Q 95 then check your conscience. Good Luck Professor you did very well for the first time on the big show. Being there is like when someone gets a nomination in the movies ir is always part of your live that you were nominated for doing a good job. De professor did a much better job than jamma B. Is it because id his first time the judges didnt place him.But he was suppose to be in the top 4,he is still my king for 2015
There is one judge who worked for the finals who was on face book making adverse comments on the professor so I am not supprised they did not place him. Jason is that judge and I have the comments printed which I will send to Pellam.

Congrats to the King Karessa!! Great job indeed but I am of the opinion that Dice won the crown. In other words, it should have been Dice- King and Karessa 1st Runner-up. You see, in this land of the blind even Kaiso has fallen victim to the political aligned judges. Yes, yes, yes I know Karessa is from Marigot but they consistent well laden blows in Dice’s renditions over the years has instilled fear in the hears of the “one eyed” man and hence Kaiso and its deliverers are now under attack. Some may call me all names but truth be told, Dice won the crown. But as we all say, the judges decision is final so until next year our 7 times King has gracefully given up his crown with a fight to the finish. Like many, I wish not to see men of the “cloth” judging in these activities because they have shown how biased they can be.
Let us all extend an olive branch to Karessa while reminding him that the next fight is just 12 months away. Congrats King Karessa because a win is a win…

Professor is overrated he became popular because of war of words between the pelam and pat. His songs lyrical content is weak as neutral critic but I guess the calypso commentators afraid to say that because they go with flow such a shame

Love my boy Keressah, but sorry, King Dice did nothing to lose his crown and none of these calypsonians did anything to win this years crown away from Dice. Hope he doesn’t become discouraged: it’s one thing to lose in a competion and another to be treated unfairly. Would have love to see Karessah win through true hardwork and competive action….this did not happen here, shame.

Since lyrics and melody carry seventy points over a hundred, obviously the Pat Aaron style did not do the trick this year. The very straightforward moral message in ballad style bowed to the witty and percussive style of calypso.
