Dominica’s sole electricity company, DOMLEC, has donated a total of $60,000 towards the staging of Carnival this year.

Public Relations Officer, Adina Bellot-Valentine outlined the activities and organizations the company intends to sponsor this Carnival season at a press conference on Monday morning, held at the company’s office in Fond Cole.

“We are aware of the economic situation in the country; however, we have not strayed from our corporate responsibility in giving back to the island’s culture, and so, this year we have teamed up with a number of groups and organizations for Mas Dominik 2016,” she said

She stated that in an effort to “spread the bread,” DOMLEC, while maintaining sponsorship of its traditional groups, has undertaken sponsorship for several other events and organizations, such as: The Africulture Stilt Walkers, Stardom Tent, Portsmouth Town Council, Thunderbirds Band, St. Mark’s New Vision Steel Band, Roseau Valley Enhancement Committee, Leo Club, Rotaract Club, DASPA Calypso Show, and the Rotary Club Souse and Punch Party.

Bellot-Valentine also explained that the company has undertaken the responsibility of providing in-kind support for certain groups.

“We are also making available, in kind, $5,000 worth of electricity to the Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC) for the use in the stadium throughout the Carnival season, and that began on the opening — that was the 16th of January — as well as other in-kind sponsorship to organizations,” she revealed. “And the providing t-shirts for lapau kabwit bands, and so on.”

She explained that although sponsorship of a Carnival Queen contestant is not in the cards for DOMLEC this year, she believes that it is for the best, as it allows for several smaller donations to be made.

“Four years ago was our most recent sponsorship, and I’m sure the DFC would have loved for us to come on board this year,” Bellot- Valentine explained. “Unfortunately, we believe that when we give sponsorship of this kind today, where we touch a number of organizations, it is more beneficial to the island’s culture in supporting more than one organization… the more organizations that we are able to support, the better it is for the island’s Carnival.”

She went on to say that the company is pleased to be able to contribute to the island’s Carnival.

“We, at DOMLEC take great pride in being able to contribute to what is Dominican, and in uplifting our Dominican people, and we are pleased to help support and help develop Dominica’s carnival,” she noted. “We are happy to be giving back in tangible ways this year.”

I watched the opening of Carnival in Venice (Italy). They celebrate carnival at the same time as us and their carnival is older than ours. Such beautiful costumes and floats (litterally floats because they use their gondolas on the canals of Venice). People themseleves pay for that and don’t ask the local electricity company or telephone company to pay for them. That looks like a real carnival and not a cheap and vulgar t-shirt band behind a beaten up truck. We are too much beggars, begging for everything without shame.

If DOMLEC really wants to spread the bread they should lower the current tariffs.

Can’t we see the End Of Times is soon..DOMLEC and other businesses are donating all this money to something that displeases God, that is not of God, but the world, while they continue to present high bills to customers and many are in need of a better home, food to eat. How much money have they donated for instance, for the building of a new church for the one which collapsed near the EC Loblack bridge? I believe it is time that people invest in the things of God, the things that will last.

Some of you too damn hypocrite! Which “poor people” YOU ALL talking about? ALL YOU can raise $80,000.00 in 2 hours to give Lennox Linton to pay his court fees now you all talking about poor people. Who people that are poor?
You all should welcome DOLEC’s $60,000.00 with open hands without saying a word because DOMLEC didn’t need to give a dime.

Actually you are the only hypocrite here. The only time Laborites admitting that the country is poor is when people make donations to Linton’s cause. Other than that, you lunatics claim that the country is doing very well but ask you to show us where and how the country is doing well and you cannot come up with one thing. You were right when you said that “Domlec didn’t have to give anybody a dime.” Is best they had kept their pocket change because it was an insult to be giving away so little after making so much. It looking like you’re satisfied with the cost of your light bill. Or maybe you don’t even have a light bill. Maybe you’re still living in your mother’s basement so you’re not feeling the heat. The fact is when as long as there are people with your upside down mentality existing in Dominica, a thousand billionaires could have come to develop the island and it still wouldn’t go anywhere. Sewage products like you need to be flushed down the septic tank.

@F L, You sound worst than a lunatics by asking to tell you or show you where and how the country is doing well when I JUST SAID TO YOU, “YOU ALL CAN raise $80,000.00 in 2 hours” to foot Lennon’s court fees… ISN’T that enough proof to show you(Lunatic) the country is doing well for you all?

      Yes,Wicked DOMLEC.
You have all that money to give for people to go on the streets and form the fool
but you overcharging peopl for electricity.
That mobey could at least repair a hoyse for a needy person.

We all accustom and looking forward of DOMLEC contributing towards sponsoring a carnival contestant, I think that is defeating the cause, by donating to the other village activities and not assisting a carnival queen or princess. DOMLEC you owe the people of DA much more than that

  8. January 25, 2016

While there are many people who cannot eat three meals i think there are more important things to do with that money instead of giving it out to waste for carnival…

Tell that to the people who raise Linton court fees

We should be aware that this comes out of the profits made by the company by supplying us with electricity. In other words, we are paying for this ourselves and in today’ stagnant local economy I would have preferred a cut in tariffs instead. If people want to celebrate carnival let them pay for it themselves.

  10. January 25, 2016

how you mean nuh DOMLEC. When whole of Dominica in financial turmoil, government cannot even pay N.E.P workers, you making millions in profit. Atleast 2 million should be invested into the carnival activities. but 60k is a start

$60,000 is not enough. They should be donating millions after all the extras they’ve been unfairly making on the poor population
