Efforts being made to improve Carnival

Carnival costumes on parade at the media launch of Carnival on Monday evening

Chairman of the Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC), Collin Piper has stated the DFC will be trying to improve the carnival product in 2013.

“This year we are indeed trying to change things for the carnival season, we are keeping what has worked for us and we are trying some new things to continue to improve the product,” Piper said during the media launch of Carnival 2013 at the Fort Young Hotel on Monday evening.

According to Piper, one of the main changes for this year’s season is giving sponsors more value for money.

“In the opening parade each corporate sponsor will have time in front of the camera to be interviewed, explain their floats, and explain their products,” he pointed out.

The chairman also mentioned that promoting more activities at Carnival City is another change for the 2013 carnival season. According to him, this may be a challenge, however efforts are being made to make the venue more attractive so it could be a venue of choice for carnival events.

Piper also said that placing more concentration on the Miss Dominica Pageant is another priority for the DFC.

Meanwhile, Minister for Culture, Youth and Sports, Justina Charles, urged the youth to get more involved in the carnival activities by joining a band and displaying their skills and talents.

“I encourage the youth to be innovative, learn, practice and showcase your artistic skills. It is an opportunity to highlight your creative skills and to blend colour, skill and style that will provide that level of exuberance without eroding the uniqueness of our traditional, cultural heritage,” she said.

She reminded the public that carnival is a time of freedom of expression and that bad behaviour will not be tolerated.

Charles also urged everyone to come on board to make the season a successful one.

musliim, see the attitude of a people who have been exiled from the pathway of God. No desire for Allah/God. If an earthquake comes you will see the chuch pack to the brim. God is not a papee show

In order to compete with other Caribbean Carnivals, such as Trinidad&Tobagos, which attractives lots of attention, including international, I think that Dominica should play more Soca, and more Soca from the other islands (as opposed to local Bouyon) although they should still play Bouyon music, and also they should play Dancehall music & Reggae.

Also, from what I’ve been told from people is that another thing they love about Trinidad&Tobago’s carnival is the costumes. T&T’s costumes look nice & sexy and professionally made, whereas Dominica’s look cheap and handmade.

A lot of people from the UK or US for example go to carnivals in some of the other islands because the women look and dress sexy, but as I stated before, Dominicans don’t dress sexy, just cheap, and also a lot of the women these days are overweight/obese and that isn’t sexy at all, which another reason why not a lot of international people come to Dominica for the carnival compared to T&T etc.

I can go on & on so I think it’s best I stop here lol, bye.

All Dominicans care is about Carnival, Carnival, they are not even interested in Christmas, when it is when Christ was born, imagine, Christmas, did not even arrive yet, and they had a calypso show, and we wonder why, the nation is plagued with violence, all the drugs etc. Let us more focus, on more significant things than Carnival, I love Carnival, but some Dominicans make carnival their GOD.

It is time for some young people with creative minds join the carnival planning committee, because these people are killing Dominica’s carnival.

Alas – more of the same – when will things ever change – the planning of carnival seems to be an ad hoc thing – no real system in place – no real dollars to fund what makes a successful event. The minister calls on the youth to join a band – with what money may I ask?

Violence is on the rise – I can only imagine the crime that will accompany carnival this year – does anyone reallty care?

Mr. Piper and those who think that they can improve carnival in 2013 by not starting in 2012 with an intensive promotional an incentive campaign might as well abandon that thought process

    Question:

    1. What is the history and significance of carnival?

It is done every year without question, what is the spiritual significance of it? There may be good in carnival however does the good outweigh the harms associated with carnival?

I really hope we can have an informed discourse about this issue, thanks.

Also, for those who believe in God/Allah, did He legislate this festivity according to scriptures? Thank you, I welcome an educated and informed discussion on the issue.

      January 8, 2013

The origin of carnival is from the days when the slaves were told that were free to go about their bussiness and no longer the property of any white man.
They were so happy that they took to the strets and “JUMP-UP” making songs on their “former owners,” as such we have always celebrated “our freedom” in this manner.
      any other questions?
