UPDATE WITH PHOTOS: Hunter wins 2013 Stardom crown

Hunter as Stardom Tent last night. Photo by 365, MMP

Hunter is the 2013 Stardom Monarch of the Tent.

He beat 17 other calypsonians to win the competition which was held on Wednesday night at Carnival City, singing his popular number “Another Mother’s Son”.

Other calypsonians making the top five were Shadow Flow at 2, Caressa 3, Black Diamond 4 and Daddy Chess at 5.

Hunter  has emerged from one of 2013’s major calypso controversies to win two crowns in the space of five days. He also won this year’s police calypso competition which was held on Saturday 2nd February.

The three-time national calypso king withdrew from the 2013 calypso final following allegations that he cheated after video footage of his semi-final performance showed some of the lyrics of his song written on the palm of his hand.

After he was announced winner, the Stardom Tent monarch burst into an ex-tempo rendition of “Palm, palm, palm, Hunter reading palm. Palm, palm, palm, Hunter reading palm. So by now everyone should know, he is the palm man of calypso” in which he took pot  shots at media personalities who were involved in exposing his alleged “palm-reading” behaviour.

Sometimes when I read the nonsence some of us post up for the world to see, I wonder just what message are we Dominicans sending for the rest of world out there. My people no one can keep a good man down because a good man accepts his wrong, humbles himself, and stives for better next time. Anyone with that approach. NO ONE CAN EVER HOLD HIM DOWN.

Just curious.. How much lyrics can one really write on the palm? Allu Dominicans really like daybar papa. Get a fricking life and enjoy the damn carnival season. Some of us well wish we could be there to partake.
As for morals and role model business. How about you guys start raising your children correctly instead of expecting other people to do it, ie. entertainers, athletes etc. Stop blaming everyone else for YOUR crappy parenting skills.
CONGRATS HUNTER!!! Water under the bridge; move on my dear.

Many parents in Dominica allow their children to see them condoning cheating, stealing, lying and deceiving by public officials or influential people whom they like. later on when their children become social deviants , they claiming is bad companions that cause that. They may be right indeed, they are a bad and hypocritical companion to their children.

Teachers take note. It seems a teacher, who takes action against a student, who comes to the exam room with notes on the subject written on a paper or on his hand and found cheating would be wrong.

Should that teacher allow the student to copy, or cheat? Would it be right if parents decide to chastise and ridicule the teacher and/or school for disciplining that student? Our society is drifting further and further away from accepting the truth.

Hunter agree you faltered and stop blaming others for your wrong. Those who condone the wrong are not the best of friends. You are a simple calypsonian, not the God of the art form who could do no wrong.

We’re a bias and ignorant bunch of people …. It’s just sad .
They wanted him to step down right ? He did !!! but yet they remain on his back every single day , their attacks went far beyond the alleged cheating , but got really nasty
and personal . Now he responded in song last night and you guys are saying he wishing them bad …… So it’s one set to talk ??

Congrats Hunter …… While they’re pointing fingers someone else is judging them .

Teachers must be careful from now on, given the absurd statements condoning what is wrong. It seems, teachers will be faced with ridicule and hate from parents and sections of the public, if they deal accordingly with any student found cheating in exams. The teacher would face the wrath of those who find nothing wrong in cheating. It is not a far-fetched thing, the way the society accepts wrong as right and vice versa.

A calypsonian who repeats a line or verse of his song while performing is automatically disqualified. Note well, he did not cheat.

Although points could be deducted for poor rendition, according to the judging criteria, however the DCA decided that the said calypsonian’s head would be (literally)cut.

But there is no Law/rule for cheating? After decades of organising Calypso competitions, there is no rule/law if a performer is found cheating? Yet, excuses, excuses for the wrong the calypsonian himself did.

Your child does something wrong but you want to kill them with blows. The adult does something wrong, it’s OK, depending on who does the wrong? To curb wrong doing/cheating will only auger well for the integrity of the art form.

I will never understand all this diatribe about the Hunter and his palm cheating performance innthe semi-finals. It is a known fact that technology provide an opportunity to know the truth about this hunter cheating matter, it is a know fact for those of us following the calypso over the years that this is the only calypsonian in the history of Dominica was caught in a semi final competition reading from the palm of his hands. If he was so convinced that he did no wrong why then did he withdraw? What makes this matter so inflamed is the executive of the Calypso Association and its president who are so protective of this guy because he is a member of the executive and a stardum tent performer/member, so we can conclude because its Hunter the wrong he did becomes right, hence the politics of the calypso association. Had it been any other performer or Mass camp calypsonian the entire stardum tent and the dreadful president of the DCA who seem to be heartless towards the incident of two senior citizens would of taken a different action. Hunter disgraced himself at one of Dominicans premier competition and wants to blame Lenox and Matt for his palm chaeting performance by wishing the worst for them, but his wish for Lenox and Matt will come back to hut him soon.

Well I guess his mother never taught him not to cheat. They saying too much politics in calypso but the simple party song which is the best song to enjoy de carnival to was denied the crown to reward a cheat. Only on Domonica! In trini that song by shadow flow would already be favourite for road march. Of I had a song system on the road de rum and de party is all I would play. All those crying sympathy crown do you have proof or is it typical rumor. If the man cheated at the tent he should not have won but if he didn’t then move on stop complaining about everything. your attitudes seem to show that it is not about integrity but more of a witch hunt. If it its about integrity then you should be congratulating hunter for his decision to step down to avoid all the controversy but instead you prefer to attack every other action every win. I only hope that if you keep on crying about a sympathy crown that you are perfect and never in need of a second chance. Or if you are not and you mess up then you would not look for a second chance or complain when people keep trying to hold you down because of the actions from your past.

    February 7, 2013

If Hunter deserved the win..then GREAT.Congrats to him and I wish him the best in the future. But I maintain that he must take his blame and do not try to use others as scapegoats. He did have the lyrics written on his hands…no cameraman superimposed them on his palms so he must not be sanctimonious and hypocrital ..saying yes he had lyrics but blamining other people are aftter. You had the lyrics… you admitted it.. you did the honourable thing and resigned. Don’t throw words for people.

I say even if you say you did not look at your hands…great if you didn’t..but the fact of the matter is …there were lyrics on your palm. People cannnot turn a blind eyes to this…this would not be allowed in any examination room or arena where it would be wrong to do so.

So take your blame Hunter…you won two crowns this year…count your blessings and come back next year.

Ther is nothing wrong in messing up at times..but it is how we behave afterwards that will determine how we will be remembered most.

  39. Calypso lover
    February 7, 2013

Has any Dominica said that Hunter is not a top calypsonian? Has anybody cried down his song? Hunter, as a Police Officer and a Member of the DCA, should stop putting up that stubborn defence of wrong-doing/cheating. The calypsonian was found cheating. The video shots are not lieing. Point blank.

Hunter has never accepted his faux-pas, even though the vidoe shots clearly show to the world that what he did was in bad taste and hinged on cheating, giving himself an added advantage over the other calypsonians at the semis.

Hunter could go on to win all the crowns. Good for him. But winning those competitions does not erase the fact that, as a seasoned calypsonian, he has disappointed himself, the DCA, his fans, the calypso fraternity this time around.

Certainly he has lost some credibility. Here it is Hunter sings about incresse in crime and criminaql acts, but finds himself doing a wrong act/cheating, which is not in tune with the art form.

Hunter himself admitted to the MARPIN interviewer that he had some words of his song written on his hand. He did not say is somebody else who wrote those words. To err is human Hunter. You made a mistake and you should admit.

My God, is Hunter right to do what he did?

Is honesty a crime in Dominica?

To speak the truth is an abomination and anyone found speaking Truth to power should be chastised?

Where have our Christian principles/values gone? Irrespective of who committ the wrong act, if it is wrong, it is wrong. It is Hunter, the policeman, who could arrest anyone for stealing, lieing/cheating, or engaging in wrong doings. Isn’t it the same police Force who call on citizens to report illegal acts or crimes if they see that happening?

Have Dominicans lost their reason? Or wrongdoings have so envelopped the society, several going unpunished, that such acts are no longer worrisome to us? So why blame the youth for cheating, etc. etc., haul them before the courts, fine or jail them, but others, adults, are supported and excused for doing wrong?

Where are your consciences? That’s how we build a nation, condoning wrong at all levels? Shame!!!! A downright shame. Calypso, is much, much bigger than Hunter or any other calypsonian. According to an old Chinese proverb, “If it is wrong, don’t do it.”

    • STILL
      February 7, 2013

Do we build a nation by saying that because of what happened inn that night hr should just stay out of calypso. He was wrong on that night he stepped down. He is a Calypsonian the end off his performance was what Calypsonians do. Stop making a big deal about those little things and focus on the more important things that are destroying the country.

Hunter has been and will continue to be a great calypsonian in the future, despite the snafu he created with the fist lines of the 2nd & 3rd verses of his song written on his palm. He admitted it. It’s over. Move on people! Why do you believe that unethical behavior is the norms, and should not be corrected when brought to light? You are destroying the fabric of what is taught my our parents and preached in church. You are destroying the country by politicizing every aspect of what is bad to make it good. I don’t understand allu hard back dom in a can. D man cheat, allu supporting him. I NEED TO LEAVE this country bfore i become like allu. Wrong is wrong.

        February 7, 2013

Wrong is wrong, true. Hunter paid the price for the semi-finals. Accept that. When you pointing out wrong – point out all wrong. It would be wrong to continue to punish him when he already paid.

Hunter did not cheat at the Stardom Monarch of the Tent show. I was there. He gave a sterling performance – nobody can question that. He deserved his win.

    • so true
      February 7, 2013

Yes Dominicans..What is our society coming to? No one did anything to Hunter but himself..No one tried to bring a good man down..As a matter of fact no one is good except God. Hunter just proved that to you..Wrong is wrong no matter who is in the situation…Accept it and lets move on people…The quicker Hunter’s so called fans stop this back and forthing with the ‘palm’ issue the quicker he moves on..Stop putting salt in his wound..

I would like to know where was King Dice when Hunter wrote the lyricsof the song on his hand. Give Dice a break, You all crying down the youth and when they try to make a change you all still bringing in the negatives. Let Hunter conscience be his guide

Ofcourse Hunter could beat Dice and that’s why he was seen as a threat so they had to do what they had to do to eliminate the threat.

      • Helas!
        February 7, 2013

Yea by making Hunter lie and cheat, I thought he did that on his own?

        February 7, 2013

Beat Dice with what? It’s clear to see they are feeling sorry for Hunter so they gave him two crowns. That’s all.

      • dominican
        February 7, 2013

Hunter is the only to be blamed for what he did, and he has already owned up in his own way, still blaming people for his mishaps. Shame on all those who support him for doing wrong.

      • Nike
        February 7, 2013

This is not a sympathy win but Hunter sang out his heart and won fair and square. Do not include Dice in this at all. He was one of the first calypsonians to call Hunter to empathize, ask him. The two are NOT enemies like some of you potray.

Police crown is crown to talk about. Yes, I.
