Lagoon Street Jam on tonight

It is a night calypso and Carnival lovers look forward to.

It is the Lagoon Street Jam and it’s on tonight.

The event has been staged every year since the early 1980’s and one of its organizers, Norman Letang of the Swinging Stars, described it as a “night of pulsating music” and a “good warm up for the Carnival.”

“Actually it is one of the major parts of the run up to Carnival,” he said.”It is one of the more enjoyable evenings of Carnival.”

Letang said the show runs from 8:00 pm to mid-night and will feature calypsonians from Stardom Tent with “up tempo” tunes.

Patrons will be treated to performances from the likes of Scrunter, Beno, Chris B, Shadow Flow, Lugaz, Checker, Unwanted, Sour Sour, DBS, Lady Star, Twanna, Dino, Son of Saint, Big Jeff, Intruder, Daddy Chess, Black Diamond, Caressa, Ras Kelly, Web, Della, Royette and Hunter.

The jam is expected to take place on the corner of Independence Street and Cork Street, however a fence in front the National Cooperative Credit Union (NCCU) building may pose a problem.

Letang said he has written to the Commissioner of Police on the matter and the fence should be down in time for the event. However, if the fence remains, Lagoon Street Jam will move to the corner of King George the Fifth Street and Independence Street.

Letang said he isn’t expecting any “trouble” at the event. “Our supporters don’t behave bad, as rule,” he stated.

The event is sponsored by Carib Beer and organized by Swing Stars Band.

I hope nobody from mass camp show up at Norman Letang street Jam and beg to sing. This show used to be open to all calypsonians, for the past few years mass camp calypsonians are not invited to perform. Stardom Tent and it organizers just have hatred towards mass camp calypsonians since mass camp came around. Lets ask observer about the incident with his former manager, where he pull a knife on one of swinging stars members for unplugging a mike on observer to prevent him from singing at the tent because he sang at mass camp too….

So Lagoon street jam becomes stardom tent only now! When will they stop dividing the tents – Dominicans like all calypsos. Besides i think that the street jam should be strictly the hot calypsos. Who wants to listen to Dyno, Son of the Saint and Intruder? Stupes….

I listened to the radio announcement for this event and I was quite surprised by the non-inclusion of calypsonians from the Mass Camp Tent. Not surprisingly I was not the only one with this concern. I listened to “Talking Point’ on DBS where the host called the organizer to explain this same concern.According to him it is a Swinging Stars and they give priority to the calypsonians from Stardom tent. Fair enough, but there are two tents on island. To say that ‘charity begins at home’ and ‘others’ can sing if they want to or if there is time, is clearly a biased view. The ‘other’ calypsonians cannot be an afterthought. You know how much time you have 8pm- 12am and you know how many Calypsonians there are; arrange the event so that calypsonians from both tents can perform for the public. He even went as far as saying that there are not many upbeat songs from the Mass Camp Tent…Biased indeed. This is not in the best interest of Calypso.

This speaks volumes as to who the swinging stars members will play better for on the night of the finals.

norman once again you have shown your true colors when it comes to calypsonians from mass camp imagine u said that they dont have uptempo songs? STUPES!what a poor excuse. In three hours (or 180 mins) u can accomodate almost 40 caypsonians each singing at east 4 mins or less. With every 4 stardom calypsnians you can have1 mass camper.
Remember you said last year that calypses should be judged by musicians? Crazy banned mass camp n the kairi FM , now yu want to ban dem on the road. Think seriously abut ur actions norman it is discrimation

Wonder iF Dominica will ever elevate their Music Upwards heard the Organiser on Q95 didn’t sound Unity Like To me..

Sadly Dominica has so much talent but the Lack of Unity and not seeing the Bigger Picture Destroys the Overall Art Form Product in Dominica..

Dominica SURELY LACKS THAT UNIFYING BOND!

Which islands like Jamaica and Trinidad have.

But again Dominica has that lower angle mindset.

Maybe the excessive Beauty has clouded their Way Of Thinking…to me its a Bush/Jungle Crab vibe!

Very sorry that the explanation on QFM this morning hurt you.

If you organize an activity, you have persons in an organization for example swingingstars, who has stardum tent, you must expect them to have their members before any body else. We have to be fair. Mr Lantang said in the past when other members from the other tent comes, they allow them to sing. If Matt did not ask the question, you would not even know that is what was happening.

They don’t even have time for all their in the four hours. Be fair!!!!

Be fair about what? u people are condoning too much unfair practices in this land.I remember one year bouteille did not sing in the lagoon street jam a stardom tent singer for many years? when i enquired i was told they use mostly the up beat tempo songs, more the road march tunes, bouteille song was too slow and they had most of the calpsonians with that kind of jumpy tune, so what has gone so wrong this time that this is now a charity begins at home swinging stars stardom tent lagoon jam/

I believe the ‘Lagoon Street Jam’ should be permanently located at the intersection of Kennedy Ave & Independence St.That is the area where traditionally the’Lagoon’section of Roseau has always been identified as.Furthermore, that intersection is now dominated by businesses so it does not infringe on persons trying to enter/leave/sleep in their residences as we have at the two other locations Cork St.& King George St.where people have homes and which are not identified as Lagoon areas persay.Let’s try keeping it real & authentic as much as possible.

too much politics in calpso, come on Normam swinging stars have no claim to any calpsonian after all swinging stars only play music they write no songs for the calpsonian. I can understand Pat views on the songs he wrote making it to finals but after all u play music for all let as many of the hit songs be sung tonight. that thing about stars tent have so many in the final make no sense.
