Sye defends ‘Dr Finger’

Murphy ‘Sye’ Jno Jules has come out in defense of his calypso entitled ‘Dr Finger’.

The song is presently not being aired on the national radio station, DBS Radio, even after a second review which saw the approval of two other calypsos which were also not being aired.

“I think that is really taking a backwards step and its very petty of DBS radio. I don’t think anything is wrong with my song as compared to other songs I am hearing played on DBS.  I don’t think they have any reason for banning my song. It is very, very mild as compared to other songs I hear DBS airing,” Sye told Dominica News Online.

The calypsonian said the move by DBS would not have a negative effect on his musical career, but instead strengthen and motivate him.

“I don’t think I am raw, vulgar…I just don’t see anything wrong with my song. It means that I am going to take my song to the next level. I think that’s strength for me, I will use it as a motivating factor,” he said.

DBS Chairman Aurelius Jolly earlier said that the decision not to air certain calypsos was made to protect the radio station from legal action.

“As far as I am concerned, there is too much going on in the calypsos. Many of them tried to put traps for DBS and they will continue and that is what we are trying to protect the station against,” Jolly stated.

Yakima’s calypso ‘Lookin for their Pocket’ and Prosper’s ‘Ma Dominique Garbage Bin’ were also not being aired on the local station; however, that decision has since been reviewed.

The banning of the song is purely for political reasons. It is clear that “PositiveDominican” don’t know anything about Calypso, Maybe he/she just started listening to Calypso, that’s the nature of Calypso get use to it. Mr. Jolly’s reason for banning the song is just dumb, there is no other word to describe it.

  4. Well...
    January 28, 2010

Somebody should write a song on DBS! Lol!

  5. SERIOUSLY!
    January 27, 2010

If we go back far enough, we will find a lot of songs with peoples names in it. I do not know where Oreelius come out after all those years he on earth. Is now calypso dirty? No!! When people call people aunty man, I doh hear no cry. Listen, there are so many examples, I do not want to start. Our culture is not getting lost in TV it is getting lost in old peoples head.

Who the heck is Doctor Fingers? How comes DBS playing Son of the Saint song? We know who is Mat? What is your point? Oh, I forget. The doctor have money to pay lawyer. Well, you are stupid for lack of a better word. Unless a full name is mentioned, a man cannot come to court and say Your honour is me they referring to. The fact is doctor fingers escape with rape once and he is going to escape again.

Censorship in DBS is crap. It targets certain people of certain political affiliation. Oreelius talking about setting traps, he look like he just come out of one.

Sye, we know de see. You doh have to get crown. You could have sing ave maria, you still would not get crown. When Rabbit make ‘Run Solomon’, he sacrifice his crown and doh sing de song. Boy sing your heart out. DBS doesn’t pay to come calypso show. Is we the audience and we love the song. For the morons who say you are a police investigate, tell them that is all you can do. High profile case just disappears.

To the people asking Sye to investigate the matter as a police officer, we know how the system works in DA…… People were arrested and never prosecuted. What can Sye do in this case, but put it in song, and yet DBS still will not play the Calypso………. Dominicans I suggest that you get your facts before you post comments.

    January 27, 2010

if sye is making all these accusations in his song, as a police officer he can investigate the matter! wait, we all know who he referring to. while he can make it to the finals, my prediction …… he will not place.

Frankly, the majority of the calypsoes this year sucks. I guess most of the guys were expecting a politically charged carnival atmosphere hence a lot of the usual Skerrit bashing nonesense. Some of the songs are also too vulgar. I am sure these guys can bring out their message without the raw vulgarity. That would eliminate the need by radio stations to ban their songs.

I am calling for a demonstration out side DBS, and if the voice of the people is still not heard we are calling for a resignation of the chairman and we wont stop till this happens.

Please dont see this as a threat it is a sign of our freedom of speech being taken for granted and shows us that people in power will always use thier power to abuse

play the god damn songs mr chairman

I guess banning those calypsoes is not a new thing. Think of songs that SHAKEYsang that were banned, De rabbit was the most banned calypsonian,Spider deceased was banned.Sye join the club.

    January 26, 2010

DBS radio station banned the playing of Ophelia and Gordon Henderson’s music for three years because the artists queried the use of their songs for the production of CDs for sale without their permission.
Recently DBS board was dismissed after a scandal involving some $60000 plus re. telephone.
DBS refused equal access to parties just recently. The views of a significant section of Dominican society could not be aired or heard on that station
DBS in 2010 bans one calypso and attempted to muzzle two more. The present chairman was there all along. DBS has not been punished for those wrong doings, but finds it fitting to punish the calypsonian for exercising his freedom of expression utilizing song as his medium. What is DBS policy regarding the playing of non-libelous songs on ‘The Nation Station?’

Dominicans, and in that case Calypsonians, should not continue to remain silent on those violations of the artists or any other persons’ right to freedom of expression. Stop this senseless, unproductive cultural insensitivity. The excuses regarding that banning action this year are laughable. DBS continues to ban and refuse Dominicans access because many remain silent and accept violations of people’s rights.

I WOULD LLIKE TO KNOW, ARE ANY NAMES BEING CALLED IN THAT SONG ‘DR FINGER’?

IF NO NAMES ARE BEING CALLED, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO LAWSUIT THAT CAN BE BROUGHT ON ANYONE!!!

WHAT ABOUT THE SONG THAT SAYING “IAN DOUG LAS, IAN DOG CANNOT BE LAST”????

  21. kakabawi 22
    January 26, 2010

Sye, if you know so much about Dr. Fingers you are, first of all a police officer, you did not do any thing. Here in Dominica, your song is not going to establish a national child or women abuse act. Like all our laws, its all on paper already and thats where it stays. Expose the crimes you uncover as a cop the right way then your voice will be heard on DBS.

Only good lyrics and not vulgar songs. Time to grow up, men.

  23. Just wondering
    January 26, 2010

Don’t worry my friend. DBS’ pettiness ,which by the way is not the view of IAN DOUGLAS, is only serving to make your song legendary. There is always an accompanying demand for a banned product. DBS management must listen to the request shows on the other radio stations and then rate DR FINGER..

    January 26, 2010

Sye, would you like to be Calypso King………… Well if that is so Let the Doctor Writer………. write you another “GOOD” song so that you are not left in the cold………… Then we will see what D.B.S will do………… What a shame it would be………. All the stations playing the song of the King and the Nations Station banning it for fear of being sued by an “Imaginary?!” Dr. Finger

  25. only
    January 26, 2010

Keep up with the freedom of expression and freedom of speech. Censorship only increases demand.

  26. January 26, 2010

D.B.S should ban all the songs. This might help these calypsonians to write better songs.I know for sure they will sell a few more C.Ds for that.

Angel u are so right, In this song “Pastors rod” names were even mentioned, yet DBS had no issuses with playing it. What a double standard. I hope our “Nation Station” re-visit their decision and do the right thing.

Sye hats off to you> You did well by putting the facts thats affecting a number of ladies in the country. This is a white colour crime and no one is listening the police and not investigating and the medical board are doing absolutely nothing. Sye took it to calypso and it is still being stiffled.
