Carnival Princess 2016, Rayne Benjamin said she is happy to have been given the opportunity to represent her school at this year’s pageant.
The elated 10-year-old, who represented the Convent Preparatory School, told the media moments after being crowned on Sunday evening that her best rounds were the talent, party dress and costume rounds.
“I feel happy to be representing my school at this year’s Carnival Princess Show,” she said.
She encouraged other young ladies who show interest in taking part in the Carnival Princess Pageant.
“All those who want to take part in the Princess show I encourage you to take part, do your best, go out there and show the world what you can do,” she encouraged.
She thanked her dance teachers, parents and other family members who assisted her in preparing for the show.
Benjamin also congratulated the other contestants who represented their school in this year’s pageant.
She received the awards for Best in Costume and Best in Party dress.
She was sponsored by Greens Wholesale, Depex Color Lab and Triple Kay Global.
Her mother, radio personality, Kimara Hurtault, said Rayne came into the competition “rather late” but there was a plan in place.
“I am very happy; it was a lot of work. She came into the competition rather late, the last contestant to come in, but we had a plan,” she stated. “It was to be consistent in every round and that was the plan and with stuck to that.”
She described her daughter as having natural talent from birth and that she was “very comfortable” on the stage.
Rayne’s father, the lead singer of Triple Kay Global, Wayne Benjamin, said all the hard work has paid off.
“I am overwhelmed, we were all there for Rayne, helping her every step of the way…,” he stated. “She came on stage, did what she had to do and executed it perfectly.”
The first runner-up position went to Gabrielle Williams of the St Luke’s Primary School. She received awards for Miss Intelligent and Miss Photogenic and the People’s Choice Award
Kyanna Etienne of the Grand Bay Primary School received the 2nd runner up position and copped the award for best talent.
Miss congeniality award went to Cadella Charles, who represented the St Martin’s Primary School.
The other contestants were Kyliee Karlson who represented the Kelleb Laurent Primary School and Danika Betrand who represented the Goodwill Primary.
The Show was held at the Harlem Plaza on Sunday.
that is ONE of the reasons i do not let my girls take part in these things, too much hatred and scandal, princess, and teen pageant.. yes it is a form to let the young girls/ladies show their talent and be more confident in themselves but the crowd, you negative people are too narrow minded, instead of giving them praise for their hard work and determination you all are criticizing if the kids parents, come on people. you all are grown ups, when you behave in such a manner the young ones even your young girls see and hear what you are doing and saying and we wonder why they grow up to be that person… look around you and be proud of the young people instead of bashing them. they go to these contest to represent their schools and themselves so please give them a break..
I don;t want to get too involved in that but Alas that little girl from St Luke’s school OH my Goodness> she was REALLY Good.
Give Dominicans something to talk about and they will take it to their grave. Congrats to the young lady who won. You did something that your mom could not do. You light up the stage. It was also nice to see a father so involved in his daughter. He was truly a role model for men. Once again congrats.
And people, nothing else cannot be done. Show is over. So drink some water and bury allu sorrows. It is not worth getting high blood pressure over this .

Rayne answered the question how her mother taught her to. Remember when her mother went for queen and they asked her a question relating to her identical look with her mum. She could not answer either. I guess the genes pass through. But at lease she won and her mum came out last. Congrats rayne! Proud of u

The child did well!!! I was proud to see a father so involved… I know they generally leave it up to the mothers. The girls were all so beautiful… I supported them all through. They worked hard and it showed. Congratulations!!! Let Rayne reign!!!
I never ever thought that Princess Show would be caught in such a scandal. It seems like some points need to be cleared up so that people can understand how a winner is selected.
First of all, Miss Photogenic, Miss Congeniality and the People’s choice awards carry no points towards the scores. Each of the other rounds are scored with maximum of Talent(40), Speech (30), Costume (30), Party dress( 25). The Key is CONSISTENCY. If a contestant is consistent throughout it is possible for them to win without even receiving any award. (As has been seen with some of our queen contestants both representing us here and aboard). How ever the princess received two judged awards, whereas the 1st runner up and 2nd runner up received one each.
What we need to do is commend these girls for their bravery, their hardwork andacievements. Teach them to lose graciously and accept the judges decision.
Congratulations to ALL the girls. U ALL did an amazing job and put on a fabulous show.
More you say that more our people do not learn. I mean come on! The way I heard it, the competition was tight so if one edged out the other let it be and let the kids be gracious to each other.

The judges should not be only from Roseau, and there was also a judge who was a pass convent pre teacher. What do you expect. I want to know why let the kids make costumes and don’t judge best costume, but have best in costume.
No offense to you Rayne but you didn’t deserve that crown. A bittersweet win because you all know well that this isn’t an honest win. All that hype about a talent and you didn’t win best talent because it was lacking. Your speech was another round where you would have lost points it was too vague and you were shouting. I agree with the awards for best in costume and best in party dress.Gabrielle on the other hand was consistent. Her talent was great however Grand bay deserved best talent. Gabrielle had the best party dress hands down and her costume was beautiful. Her speech was excellent. Articulate and on point. So I’d really like to see the score sheets because this show was poorly judged.

Leave the child alone. She won. We know shows are seldom judged fairly in Dominica, and your surname of popular parents has a very strong part to play. Yes her Dad is an entertainer, he mom tried in the industry and failed …….. She is now making her family proud. The first crown in three generations of “contestants”. I heard someone say three generations of queens, but they are a bit confused. You cannot be a queen if you were not placed. Let the family celebrate their victory. Hope she can continue and fill the shoes and finally achieve the family dream. Loosen up people, its just a princess show.

As a past princess, winning individual prizes do not mean that you are the winner. I remembered only receiving best costume and winning. Winning because i was consistent in EVER round.. Rayne was consistent so she deserved it. Gabriel was going good however her points dropped from the costume round but Rayne continued to shower with her excitement and grace in the last two rounds. People’s Choice and Ms. Photogenic are not judged rounds.

I haven’t been to princess show in years and I really enjoyed the show. congrats to all the girls. You all put on a great performance.
I’d just like to point out two things. First, I don’t think it’s right to give the Title of Miss Intelligence because the girls really are performing a very well practiced speech. Miss Intelligence gives the impression that they were answering questions intelligently. I doubt the girls wrote the speech themselves.
Secondly, I left the park more than once to get some coloured popcorn and cotton candy and others stuff outside and was shocked to find guys smoking ganja right outside the gate. We had to walk right through this group of high young men. Rotaract, this is unacceptable. Please review the venue.

St. Lukes only got miss intelligence… How well did she do in the other rounds? Was she consistent? best IN party dress, best IN costume, as opposed to INTELLEGENCE, with the PEOPLES CHOICE thrown in. i dont know what the objective of these pageants is, but i’d like to think – particularly since these r such young kids – that the organisers would base it on more than a ‘pretty’ contest. all these kids are exceptionally beautiful, no doubt. just let them know they have more to offer than just being pretty. and intelligence actually account for more than what is offered. but thats just me.

Thank God for opinions. Intelligence over pretty dress and costume everyday. I also think it is important to instill such values in young children. Parading in party dress and costume does not bring anyone anywhere.
It’s very sad how the judging went. It’s was very apparent that St. Luck won that show. Even St. Joseph should have been there. Ryane only round she won the girls were in her party dress. IT was very clear that Grand Bay won the Costume round as well.

It’s not about bring a child down it’s about being fare.
How can Grandbay win costume round? They were not awarded for best costume nor prettiest dress.
They were awarded for BEST IN COSTUME and BEST IN PARTY DRESS. Rayne deserved her awards and she deserved the crown.

I watched this ten year performed at the Harlem Plaza last night and I must admit that she is a very strong headed child. She has no fear for the stage. She was relaxed in every round. She was awesome. Am looking forward to seeing her in a few years time at another level.

It’s possible to win Miss Intelligence by 1 or 2 points and win best dress by a whole 5 points. You really think that because someone wins Miss Intelligence that all other rounds should be forgotten and the crown should just be placed blindly on Miss Intelligence? I mean come on.
Besides, it’s a beauty pageant, if the intelligence of 8 nd 10 year olds is the only thing being tested then it should be a Spelling Bee or Math Quiz competition, not carnival princess beauty pageant.
