Citizen’s Forum and WEF host special events to mark Emancipation Day

Roseau, July 22nd, 2011 – The Waitukubuli Ecological Foundation (WEF) in collaboration with the Citizen’s Forum announces a trio of special emancipation events to mark Emancipation Day – Monday August 1st, 2011 under the theme NEVER AGAIN SLAVERY.

The first of the three events – the National Emancipation Hike – will follow the route of Jacko’s Flat, where the National Emancipation Hikes began in 2000.

The National Emancipation Hike will honour and pay homage to the brave freedom fighters during the long period of slavery whose intrepid valour helped put an end to the scourge of slavery and established a great legacy of the struggle for the freedom of our people. Associated with this struggle are the names of Jacko, Bala, Congorée, among others – our ancestors who, by our tribute on that day, we will crown with glory.

Jacko was probably the most famous of these Maroons and so this year we will pay special tribute to him and all the countless Africans who made the continuation of slavery impossible in the Americas.

All persons interested in the Emancipation Hike are asked to get in touch with Bernard Wiltshire, at 54 King George V Street, Roseau, Tel 245 8598; email [email protected].

Event number two is the Emancipation Relay Run through which athletes symbolizing the strength, vitality and endurance of our young nation will carry the Emancipation Torch from Jacko Flats, where the two rivers meet, to an assembly of patriots at Hillsborough united around the cause of emancipating today’s Dominica from the growing threats of mental and economic slavery

In event number 3 – The Emancipation Forum – the assembly of Dominican patriots, with the affirmation NEVER AGAIN SLAVERY and a vision of equal opportunity for all will renew Dominica’s commitment to the high ideals of truth, righteousness, justice and freedom of the human spirit.

To honor the founding fathers of our emancipation is an act which merits our praise but the exploitation of the memory and image of their struggle in order to play simple politics and diffuse among the nation misinformation, slander, gossip and political bile by dishonest individuals leaching off good dominicans and peddling their dishonest wares under the banner of patriotism,is abominable and an insult to the memory and the very honest struggle of those who so bravely took their places and fought for our freedom.

Totally disagree with your comment Red-Antz and you will see no reason why this is significant to us Dominicans right now. No one is playing simple politics. You seem to be blinding by what is going on around you. Time will tell Sir/Madam, time will tell.

My mother had been telling me about a marked area in the north, somewhere close to Dos Dan, that her father had told her was a runaway slaves/Negre maron burial ground. I think that areas such as these should be identified and preserved, and could be incorporated in The Emancipation celebration.

A good slogan for Dominica. Not only physical slavery but mental and religious slavery. time for total freedom of Dominica.
