Dominica celebrates Flag Day today

As part of the upcoming Independence Day celebration, today is being observed as Flag Day or Jounen Dwapo across the island.

Flag Day was instituted by the Cultural Division as part of Independence Celebrations as a way for the population to display and give recognition to the flag.

The flag is one of Dominica’s symbols of nationhood and national identity.

The flag we know today is the product of the recent design of November 3, 1988.

According to lennoxhoneychurch.com, Dominica’s flag was originally designed by artist and playwright Alwin Bully in early 1978 in preparation for the gaining of independence from Britain later that year however cabinet made certain small alterations to the original design.

Dominica’s flag was legally established by Act No. 18 of 1978 of The National Emblems of Dominica Act which was signed by the then Governor, Sir Louis Cools-Lartigue on October 31, 1978.

It was Gazetted on November 1, 1978 and became effective on November 3, that same year.

Dominica’s flag has a green background representing the forested island. A cross, made up of three bands representing “the Trinity of God” is white, black and yellow in colour, and the cross itself “demonstrates belief in God”.

Dominicans at home and abroad are encouraged to display their flags throughout the day.

Fellow Dominicans, a blessed, happy and peaceful Flag Day/Weekend and for WCMF. Be proud of your flag with its emblem, the Sisserou Parrot.
I love our colorful flag with the Sisserou Parrot. The one on this flag does not look the same.
A few years ago while at a store I saw a black bag with different colorful flags of countries. I liked it and bought it. At that time I did not scrutinized the flags; too busy I suppose. I did not use it during Winter.
The first time I used it was in Spring. Someone admired it. We scrutinized the flags on the bag and I realized that Dominica’s flag is also on it. How surprised I was. At the end of the bag reads, Toronto, Canada. Maybe made in China.
During summer I also wear Toronto/Canada T-Shirts; they are short sleeves. After all I reside here and I am a naturalized citizen. Those T-shirts are also beautiful.
On Wednesday I decided to use the bag since we are in the Fall – Autumn and heading for winter. I got some compliments about it. I have used it for three days now and who knows probably next week as well. And so, you could say on Friday I wore my Dominican Flag, be it in a different way.
I also have a T-shirt with the emblem of the flag and Sisserou which was given to me as a gift when I visited Dominica. I hope to get another one or two. I have two other T-shirts of Dominica. These are older ones, one of which reads “. . . Simply natural.” Know that I am truly a D/can at heart. I need a D/can hat to go with them when I wear them.

Happy Flag Day to us all. But why does the parrot look so strange? I thought it was far more colourful.

“Dominica’s flag has a green background representing the forested island”….lets make a conscious effort to get flags that are actually FOREST green and reject these inferior versions.
