Dominican photographers and videographers are presently showcasing their work at the newly built Memorial ACTe, Caribbean Centre of Expression and Memory of Slavery & the Slave Trade, in Guadeloupe.

Three Dominican photographers: Sheldon Casimir, Charles Louis, Ericson Joseph and two videographers; Denzel Jervier and Aarmani Augustine, were chosen to represent Dominica at the Caribbean Image Festival which began on July, 10th 2015.

The event showcases the work of more than 120 photographers and videographers from around the Caribbean and will last until August, 30th.

The Memorial ACTe is a global initiative to promote the understanding of peoples, races and cultures through the shared tragedy of slavery.

The edifice was built by the Guadeloupe Regional Council and is located in Pointe à Pitre, in the former Darboussier factory. Within its walls the history of the slave trade is explained using archived documents, images, artefacts, everyday objects plus visual and audio testimonials.

The Caribbean Festival of Images is being held to display the new modern Caribbean society succeeding slavery. The theme of the Festival is “Traces, Imprints, Becoming”. This Festival also places an accent on new trends and media used in Caribbean photography today.

The participation of the Dominicans at the event was facilitated by Marvin Fabien, Contemporary visual Artist who is one of the Caribbean curators for the exhibition.
