UPDATED WITH MORE PHOTOS: Dominicans in Houston celebrate Dominica’s Independence

Members of the Dominican Houston Association

The Dominican Houston Association held its 15th Anniversary Gala/Cultural Affairs and Dance in celebration of Dominica’s 33rd anniversary of Independence at the Milan Pavilion on October 22nd 2011.

Ambassador Hubert Charles was the key note speaker while entertainment was provided by Alex “Pawol” Bruno.

There were dance performances from Kabuli Productions whose dancers performed the Heel and Toe, Flirtation, Mazouk, Waltz and Quadrille.

The majority of the Performers learnt the traditional dances, taught by Maximea Vigilant and Barnabas Abraham while living in Houston.

The youngest dancer was 16-year-old Osagie Vigilant who danced alongside his father.  The night was a memorable one as Dominican parents dressed their American born kids in traditional wear, and folks enjoyed the food, dance and conversation.

Wow. In spite of their move to greener pastures there are still some patriotic Dominican ambassadors out there. I am proud of you all and I am especially heartened to see my co-leagues Maximae and Barrow in action.
Vigie I did not know you were so multi-talented. And what is it that you feeding Osagi with that he is growing so fast?

Looking good people. I see Castlebrucians like Mev Vigilante, Lloyd, Juliet, Freckles, Robert, Julie, Vincia and others keeping the culture alive. My boy Barrow from South City representing like a boss as usual. Thanks to all of you for keeping the culture in proper health. Houston people sure does represent year after year. I can safely say that this association is one of the best in the diaspora. Apres Bondie C’est Later.

The dresses are lovely but the strapless thing I think is doing a disservice to the national wear.

Everything else looks fine, just the strapless thing, for a national wear, to me I don’t really like.

Next time consider some sleeves, I think with that you people would have just place the cherry on the icecream.

    Great effort nonetheless!!!

strapless thing is doing a disservice to the national wear??? does that go only for those out of state??? because if you had the opportunity to observe Creole Day IN Dominica for the past years you will see that almost everyone has changed their style of wearing the national wear…no longer do we see much use of the original head-ware nor the wob…women have even started to wear black pants, white shirts and their sash! its not about the wob with sleeves or head-wear, its about knowing why one recognizes that day…I DON’T WEAR WOB FOR SURE!

Have you been to any of the cultural performances this year? Otherwise you would not make such a comment. Our youths and children were well represented at if not all the cultural dances. There were children as young as 8yrs old. Our 16 year olds participate in the adult category to. So before you open your mouth and talk about where are the young people in DA, support the cultural shows go and see what you missing out, and stop being negative about our young people

      October 28, 2011

Obviously you don’t watch our local television programmes to see the young people and children on stage during the various competitions!
