Jewel Brown, representing the Southwest, took the Best in Wob and Best Talent awards on her way to the 1st runner-up position.

The second runner-up was Vilma Lewis, who represented the north.

so some people are so insecure that they have to rebutt on all negative comments. char man!!!
be happy and confident in the skin and size you are in.
everyone has a right to comment. if given the opportunity you would have so much negative to say even about the god u created you how you are.

just stop being miserable and let people see the joy that grandbay people should possess inside you.

why are you being so uptight and defensive

    grow up
    a
and just support the girl for her acheivements.

  3. 1st Runner Up
    October 29, 2012

Having read all those comments on the debate between Madras and flowered prints, one must now wonder who’s right or who’s wrong. Three of the ladies who competed wore madras and three wore prints. That was in the early 70’s. I totally agree with the comments on preserving our National Wear. Get back to the original style of fuller, the original tete Casse with simply a brooch at the front and gold toned accessories. Get rid of all these gold beads and other items on the tete casse, all of the hair decorations, all these colored bead necklaces cheapening the look of the wob. What’s up with all these beads going around the finger. It’s bad enough we have lost the real way to showcase the Wob.

  4. October 28, 2012

Madrass should be used more often from since i was a small boy 30 some yrs ago it use to be madrass nuh , but things are changing I believe it looses the originality without the madrass

All that talk about madras dwiyets is nonsense, the people before wore bold flowered prints ,stripes, plaids, plain brocade but never madras for dwiyets. Madras was more used for the jupes and for tying the head. I think we should forget about the round foula and go back to our original triangular foula, which by the way is Dominican and not French like the round one.
The ladies should also stop putting all those things on their hats and in their hair. If this continues we will lose our traditional National wear and the young ones coming up will see something quite different. Please let us try to keep our National wear real TRADITIONAL.

How the Heck can somone win two prime awards and lose to thw winner who got no awards. I follow pageants and I know for sure that this can occur if the winner is second throughout and if the awards are evenly distributed. But, this was not the case. Though the winner may have been consistent, Jewel had two top awards over her and being consistent also, these awards of course placed Jewel before Cortella .

the two awards she got were cortella’s own. those bias judges must stop the hating to improve young people’s involvement in culture.

    • October 27, 2012

If you know much about pageant would understand it better. you don’t need to win a award at a pageant to be the winner of the pageant, whats make you win is consistancy.

A show of this calibre why is it not mandatory that the contestants use the madras for their wob????

    • Dominican
      October 26, 2012

Because the wob doesnt necessarily have to be made of madrass.

    • My take
      October 26, 2012

If you are old enough to remember the ‘days of old’ whenever you saw the the ladies in their WOB it was never, ever, madras. Always a beautiful printed fabric, and on ‘high and holy days’ a gorgeous brocade fabric.
Also, the wob was always lined with white fabric, so there………

      • MIA
        October 26, 2012

In the days they wore jengar everyday but the madras was won on special occassions. Get your facts straight. Nothing is more beautiful than a Madras Dwiyet

    October 26, 2012

so nowaday everybody jus band d madras….smh i rather c d madrass clothe everyday than these flowered cloths

    • October 26, 2012

support you one hundred percent i thought it was a table cloth or kitchen curtain i was looking at

    • Anonymous
      October 26, 2012

What are you talking about, really? Know your history befoe you make statements. These flowered cloths were around long before meadras. Slave women would dress themselves in colourful cloths and tie their heads with a different piece of cloth. This feature is still alive today as the Wob Dwiyet is originally a flowered cloth with a different piece for the tete casse or head piece. The madras was typically worn with the “jupe”.

    • Love my wob

    • anno
      October 26, 2012

I concur. The style of the cultural wear is changing very rapidly. I agree that the organizers of these shows should enforce that the wob and/or Jupe be made out of Madras. The style of the coleir(scraf) around the neck has changed as well. Culture is culture. Why change it? If you want to make a dress for walking around Roseau, from Madras or big flowers, instead of the wob or jupe thats fine. But the I think that the wob and/or jupe should be consistant with the style of that of our elders from before, especially in the competitions.

      • Rosanne S
        October 27, 2012

I totally agree with you. I am in my sixties born and bred Dominican. I remember when the show was all about displaying the wob. Walking like a real Matador with grace elegance and style showing every detail of the wob. Today its all about tucking the dress in the waistband while the hands are in motion. While Grandbay had one of the most colorful Dwiyets, we need to remember that white lining is ALWAYS used on the inside. Not purple or any other colour. At least we can preserve that part of the wob.

    October 26, 2012

They always have to voleh in a show. Jewele clearly had to win. She even got the Best in talent award which usually weighs alot; and she was consistent and good throughout. And what did the winner get?..NOTHING!

    • Dominican
      October 26, 2012

If you followed shows then you would be aware that this isnt the first show that the winner doesnt any award and emerges the winner. The competition was always between Jewel and Cortella and any one of them could have gotten the title. Congrats Cortie and Jewel!

    • junior
      October 26, 2012

the winner got nothing because those bias judges came with their agenda as they came with it for the madame wob dwiyet show, so shut the hell up and tell jewel and her paid judges will and come again

    • MIA
      October 26, 2012

You should see clearly that the judges Cortella deserved first price in 2 rounds but as usual they had to spread it. This is so unfair. They wanted to do it 2 years ago until 1 judge threatened to walk away and the gave the winner all her prizes. So not because one girl gets 2 awards and she did not wins means she is the winner. They just gave her the prizes. And there were no judges form Grand Bay. So why did Cortella win. Because she was great in all the rounds. Follow the judges trend in Dominica very closely. I have been there so I know it.
