The National Cultural Council has made a donation of accordions to the Portsmouth Jing Ping Band, Petite Savanne Jing Ping Band, and Giraudel Jing Ping Band through contributions from LIME Dominica.
$1 of every ticket sold to the 2011 LIME’s Creole in the Park was donated to the National Cultural Council.
The donation was made at the official media launch of the 2012 independence celebrations on Wednesday morning.
Manager of LIME Jeffery Baptiste said his company will continue to be active in the development of culture in Dominica. “Our focus on culture is our way of saying we want to move this country forward,” he said.
Baptiste also said LIME will continue with the initiative of donating $1 on every ticket sold for the 2012 Creole in the Park and will be making another contribution to the National Cultural Council this year. “The idea of reinvesting some of the resources toward the preservation of our cultural heritage is one good way of showing evolution of the event (Creole in the Park),” he pointed out.
He ensured the National Cultural Council that they had the support of LIME and encouraged a successful execution of the 2012 independence celebrations.
Kelver Darroux, acting minister for Culture, Youth and Sports, thanked LIME for their donation and encouraged the building of strategic partnerships in order to support training in the arts, to develop cultural products, and to create more economic opportunities through music arts and cultural industry. He encouraged Dominicans overseas to join in the celebrations and encouraged everyone to preserve Dominica’s culture.
Meanwhile Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence made a plea to all Dominicans to work closely with one another and seek greater cooperation and collaboration in ongoing efforts at community and nation building.
“Dominica still has a lot of untapped potential to explore and maximize and there is still room for further growth and development and as we step into another independence season let us also step into a new season of development for Dominica with the unity effort and co-operation of all Dominicans,” he said.
He described independence as a time to give gratitude to God for thirty-four years of nationhood and all those who played a part in Dominica’s continued development throughout the years. He declared independence “as a wonderful time to build our sense of nationality and pride and a time to promote and preserve our beautiful cultural heritage.”
He urged Dominicans during the independence season to wear creole attire, celebrate creole food, listen to creole music, dance to creole music and show the world that they are proud to be Dominicans.
The theme for this year’s celebration of independence is “Partnering for Further Progress and Development.”
Nice and thanks to LIME, i hope this will encourage the aging folk musicians to continue the good work they’re doing and more importantly, inspire the younger generation to take on this form of great music as we go forward.
ok so its mazouk time come on ladies lets get it on.
Thanks for the accordion gift to the Portsmouth Jing Ping Band

A nice gesture …but very late…I’m sure many of these gentlemen are ready to take a break and relax their hands…This gentleman captured here for example has represented our country internationally as leader of the Giraudel jing-ping band…We need to give recognition to Dominicans who are making a difference while they are in their element…but in all a lovely gesture
See my Grandpa…well deserved and very much appreciated…I should start taking lessons
Wow, this is indeed a wonderful and timely contribution to ensure that our local Jing Ping music will continue to be heard and enjoyed.
We now need some young folks to get involved and learn to play the accordion et. al so that the traditional music will live on.
Sweet jing ping music for days.
On behalf of our Jing Ping group of Giraudel, I take this opportunity to say thank you to the National Cultural Council of Dominica and Lime Operations, for this generous gift.
Too bad I cannot make out the picture of the man who has received that accordion, but he does look a bit like my aunt’s husband–Mr Joseph Alexander–who is the accordion player for our Jing Ping group in Giraudel.
Hey guys–uncle Cyril and Anthony Harve; friend Felix Mitchel; and of course accordion player, cousin Joseph Alexander, I hope you guys are still the same group keeping our Jing Ping together and alive in Giraudel, and putting our name of the board for the world to read.
Thanks again, to Mr. Jefferey Baptiste, through the National Cultural Council of Dominica and Lime, on behalf of my old men on the hills there in Giraudel.
I am proud to be from Dominica but most of all from my beautiful Giraudel, where the angels of God are born.
Yes Liz, this is your relative. Mr Couly. Congrats to the team and thanks to Lime!
Admin: Is it at all possible to get the name of the individual in the photo? To me, the person does not look like Mr. Couly.
@Easy
Thank you so much for telling me, I am glad that I have not forgotten the face of my people.
By the way I wish I knew who you were–exactly– with that name here called “Easy”, but you spoke to me like a friend that is enough–thanks again for telling me.
@My take, you made me smile I know my grandfather and yes it is Mr. Collie , I even got to listen to him play his new accordion.
