Know Your Culture dance group holds second annual cultural gala

Dancers in 18th century quadrille costume

Know Your Culture dancers shone vibrantly in a variety of Dominica’s cultural attire at their second annual cultural gala held on Saturday July 30th in New Jersey.

The groups founder, Sabina George-Mingo works tirelessly with Dominican citizens and their children, in teaching dances such as, flirtation, waltz, belle’, quadrille, heel & toe. Adults got rave reviews from the audience as they graciously danced the 18th century waltz and kids bounced around on stage with bows and arrows, performing Karifuna, while teen men & women danced the quadrille, all showcased on Saturday.

A live band serenaded the audience and dancers with cultural rhythms and musical instruments such as the boom boom, shack shack, accordion and drums.

Sitting in amazement was a hall filled with Dominicans and foreigners, who felt deep memories as their island’s culture came alive. Sabina ensures that every segment was perfect! From the dancers array of brightly colored attires, including jazzed up fullers and head pieces, hyped movements and stunning smiles.

Enticing dishes such as salt fish with bakes, peleau, fruit juices and other delicious foods were served.

A special thank you to all supporters and sponsors.

The name of the group is Know your culture, and the person who wrote that the men’s outfit was not our culture should study the culture before making comments. The outfit of both the men and women are of 18th century freed slaves. Refer to website 18th century in Dominica A Brunias.
Sabeniah and group did a wonderful job, congratulations.

Really. This is what kills us in the Diaspora. Let ‘Sabina’ take the honors for the group. The writer could not mention everyone’s name. In a group everyone does something good. However, there is always someone that will stand out amongst the rest. You seem angry right there at Sabina. Don’t kill the posting with negative vibes.

Nicely put. Why can’t we just be happy for people who have help bring about change and accomplishment for our community? It does take a village and whoever the person is can you put your name out there? I would like to acknowledge you if you helped with this outcome. “this outstanding fist class performance that the group produced.”

Kudos to those involved and Sabina. Great to see the diaspora promoting Dominican culture abroad. Shows that we do not lose our heritage no matter how far we roam.. we are Dominica

Great to see this being done in the U.S. So often, when I go abroad, people have never heard of Dominica. These events are wonderful for Dominicans abroad and foreigners who have been to the island alike (and the food is always a plus).

It is unfair to mention sabina name alone at it should be sabina and company when it’s come’s on teaching the dancer’s tiedly that is just not true and she knows that witout help from many perants and helper’s the groupe would not have get where it is right now and thats a facts because i always with them and i know all who are invole with this groupe so everyone should give credit also and i hope sabina herself can correct that, if she is an honest person as she is saying
