In 2007, the Vieille Co-operative Case Credit Union Ltd (VCCU) recognized there was a decline in cultural activities in most of the villages within its boundaries.
The credit union then took the decision to get involved in preserving and promoting Dominica’s cultural traditions. A committee was set up with the objective of stimulating interest in traditional dances and the playing of traditional instruments. This gave birth to the VCCU in Culture group led by Mrs. Vernice Bellony and Ms. Olivette Joseph.
The group has participated in Reunion 2008 and National Cultural festivities and also performed at the airport, Roseau Market and village activities.
The group is now seeking to attract new members, and persons interested in joining are invited to attend a meeting in their community. The meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, February 1,2 and 3 in Penville, Thibaud and Vieille Case, respectively, at 5 pm at the branch and sub-branch offices.
The Vieille Case Branch of the NCCU views its role in promoting and preserving the cultural heritage of its members as part of its social responsibility.
Hats off to the Vieille Case Branch of the NCCU in assisting ina movement of cultural re-awakening in the Branch’s catchment area. We can look forward to seeing Itassi and Penville folks doing the Quadrille, the Heel & Toe, Mazouk, etc.
