The New Dimension Theatre in collaboration with the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) will be staging a play entitled The Trial at the Arawak House of Culture on the May 6, 7 and 8.
The play, written and directed by Steve Hyacinth, presents a refreshing experience to the Dominican audience, recounting the history and development of the DPSU. It features a team of talented actors: Ashworth Simon, Donille Blackmore, Clive Artwell, Daniel Leslie, Giselle Hyacinth, Jay St. John, Sylma Dejean, Tresia-Ann Boston, Lynolah Charles, Kimisha Thomas, Merlina Elwin, Melisha Joseph and Cathy Dumas.
DPSU, General Secretary, Thomas Letang explained that the play emerged in response to the demands of many students and other members of the public who regularly made requests for information about the Union. They want to know what this union is really about. Why is it cherished with such passion and loyalty by some, and dismissed with such disdain by others? It was determined that a well written and executed play would answer many of these queries, while providing an excellent opportunity for sharing the history of that august organization in an informative and entertaining manner.
The Trial portrays the turmoil and triumph that the Civil Service Association, as it was called at that time, was a prominent part of in the 70’s and 80’s. The sobering reality of the challenges faced by the union in today’s uncertain and ambiguous environment are explored with unusual candor. Its enriching value as a pleasantly dramatic presentation of the social discourse of the trade union movement in Dominica is inescapable. The dialogue is engaging and easy to understand.
The play will make you laugh and cry at the same time. It will make you reflect on the rapidly evolving industrial landscape and on the extent to which we as Dominicans are willing to stand up and embrace the constitutional privileges that will ensure the preservation of our democracy.
At an entrance fee of twenty dollars ($20.00), The Trial, is a relaxing and enjoyable dramatic experience fit for all viewers.
Dominica is going great guns. productions back to back. Other institutions should take a leaf so that people can get new information properly because theater is the best medium through which news information is given.
