Preparations for International Creole Symposium shaping up

Preparations for the hosting of the Creole Symposium and Exposition in Dominica to mark the 30th Anniversary of International Creole Day are well on the way according to Co-ordinator of the event Gregory Rabess.

The event which is being organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Tourism and Legal Affairs will see over 60 overseas delegates from countries including Guadeloupe, Martinique, Haiti, Seychelles and Venezuela.

Officials from the Regional Council of Martinique and Guadeloupe, several mayors and delegations from various institutions in the French Territories will also be present.

Rabess, at a press conference last week, pointed out that Madame Yvette Galot will be representing Mr. Serge Letchimi, President of the Regional Council of Martinique.

Other participants include GarcinMalsa, Mayor of Sainte Anne, Athanase Jeanne-Rose, Mayor of St.Joseph, both of Martinique; Jean-Claude Malo, Mayor of Bouillante and Eric Jalton, Mayor of Abymes, both of Guadeloupe;Madame MaryseEtzol, Mayor of Grand Bourg in Marie Galante.

The Creole Symposium is expected to take place at the Arawak House of Culture from October 22-24. Discussions on Kweyol Language; Its role in formal education and mainstreaming Kweyol, giving it greater visibility, prominence and a more central role in development will be the highlight of day one.

On Day Two the focus will shift to Kweyol and the Cultural Industries; the economic potential of the creole space. Meanwhile, on Day Three, the focus is on regional cooperation; the development of mechanisms, strategies, programmes and projects of cooperation.

A Creole Exposition taking place in the Botanic Gardens will also form part of the Creole in the Park Experience compliments LIME, Dominica’s leading telecommunications provider and one of the partners in the staging of the Symposium and Exposition event.

Focus will be placed on Kweyol language, cultural industries, creole fashion and cuisine and will feature the work of local institutions, enterprises and individuals.

The Symposium will be streamed live on ComcTV.

    Well I am concerned about something. When people say international and 5 people coming just from the French countries surrounding us am a bit concerned about using the word international. Also there is no mention of Haiti, St. Lucia, Paramin Trinidad, Louisiana USA, Mauritius etc…

    How is all this activity going to bring benefits to the unemployment situation in Dominica? This should be the focus of all such activities.Nontheless, I hope it brings us improvements in our economic planning!
