All systems are in place for the celebration of Heritage Day in Capuchin this Sunday October 19. The day will kick off with a Kweyol Church Service at the Cana Heritage Park from 10.30 a.m. The Church service features readings, gospel, sermon and hymns in Kweyol. This will be followed by an exhibition which will feature aspects of the history and culture of the community.
The Cultural Gala will take place at the Cemetery Junction in the centre of Capuchin from 3.00 p.m. The Gala will feature addresses by Government Officials, the sashing of the Cultural Elder, Ms. Olive Elizabeth Andre and performances by cultural groups and individuals. These include the Capuchin Cultural Group, the Paix Bouche Cultural Group, the Possie Pan Cultural Group and a special guest appearance by the Karina Cultural Group of the Kalinago Territory.
Heritage Day is now into its 30th year. Heritage Day was established by the Konmite Pou Etid Kweyol (KEK) and the Division of Culture to highlight Dominica’s creole cultural heritage and to start off Simenn Kweyol/Creole Week. Heritage Day is held in a different community each year. The first-ever Heritage Day in Dominica was held in Toucarie in October 1984.
The day’s events in Capuchin will be covered live by DBS Radio and Kairi FM.
