DABA preparing for new basketball season

Plans for the 2011 National basketball league are progressing steadily as the executive are busy preparing for another great season and for the hosting of the Windward Islands Basketball Championships.

This year, the executive is planning for an early start with the 2011 Season expected to commence on March 19th. Registration is already open and a number of new teams have already expressed interest in participating in this year’s national league.

According to the executive, efforts are being made at improving some of the main basketball venues with proposals submitted to the Government of Dominica to have one of the basketball courts covered to avoid the effects of inclement weather. Efforts are also being made to source additional equipment to improve the taking of individual and team statistics. Various training seminars are also on the cards to improve on the quality of the officiating of the games.

This year’s  Windward Islands Basketball Tournament is scheduled for the 26th – 31st July and to add to the excitement and competition, neighbouring countries Martinique and St. Maarten have asked to be part of the tournament as invitational teams. It is expected that Dominica will have some of their foreign based players on island during that period to complement our local talent with the hope that the championship will remain here in Dominica.

Added to these events, the Dominica National Movement for Women, a newly formed body under the umbrella of the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association and headed by Dominica’s most prolific athlete, Garth Joseph, have already embarked on a developmental program for women basketball players around the island.  A number of teams have already been formed around the island and they are being trained in the sport of basketball as well as in their own social development.

A mini basketball program is also on the cards for the new executive as part of the DABA’s strategic plan to develop basketball and make it the sport of choice on the island.
