The Wesley constituency has been described as being in disarray over the selection of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) candidate for the upcoming general election.
Current parliamentary representative, Gloria Shillingford, announced recently that she was getting out of the political arena. Her announcement came just weeks after reports surfaced that Athenia Bejamin, a Wesley native who resided for many years in Canada, was tipped to replace her. According to reports, she has the support of DLP leader, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
But a section of the DLP Wesley constituency association is not happy with the choice of Benjamin who, it is reported, has been working overtime to be the next DLP candidate for the Wesley constituency despite her unsuccessful bid in 2009 for that position.
Chairman of the association, Cleveland Dodds, in an interview with Dominica News Online (DNO), disclosed that the constituency is in “shambles” concerning the choice of the DLP candidate.
“We just got this thing thrown down our throat and nobody is going to get bitter and tell you it’s sweet,” he said. “And as Labour Party supporters we are not supposed to be going down this road it’s not healthy …. give us who we want so we can start the election campaign and bring home the seat.”
Dodds said that they have someone who they believe can fit the bill.
“We are working with Mr. Fidel Grant,” he stated. “He is capable enough to hold any seat in parliament but we don’t want this to look like a fight.”
Grant is at present the Financial Controller at the National Development Foundation of Dominica (NDFD).
“We understand that there is a Canadian citizen that lived for 32 years over there to come back to represent us and we find that it is a bit unfair to us in the constituency,” Dodds stated. “She have not even gone to high school, what position can she hold in government?”
An obviously unhappy Dodds mentioned that the Wesley Constituency has in the past already “suffered” with parliamentary representatives who live abroad and “come down to draw their money” and return to their homes abroad.
“So there is nobody here we can present to them as a capable candidate? And this raises our eye brow, my friend,” he remarked.
Dodds contends that while Grant has the majority of support in the association, Benjamin is basically unknown to the people.
He said that about two weeks ago, letters voicing their displeasure with the situation in the Wesley constituency were sent to the Prime Minister along with other relevant authorities. According to him, they have not received a response.
When asked about their next course of action, Dodds said the association is asking those in authority to consider its plight.
Fidel Grant would not comment when DNO contacted him on the matter.
Attempts to contact Benjamin were unsuccessful.
It is with great anxiety and grave concern that I write this letter upon hearing of a possible selection for the Wesley constituency under the Dominica Labour party (DLP) ticket. I’ve always been a staunch supporter of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP); however, the controversy in the constituency surrounding this prospective candidate is very troubling to me.
Over the past few years, Mrs. Gloria Shillingford, another staunch Labour supporter of umpteen years, has dedicated her life to helping to move the community forward. She has abandoned her teaching career which she had loved so much to represent this community animosity. In spite of this, she persevered and stuck with the party. I never saw someone come under more attack. Yet she endured with style and grace. After the incumbent, Peter Carbon abandoned the constituency,she remained with the people and did everything she could have done to keep the community together. As I see it, she is getting kicked in the rear as compensation; for to be replaced by what I know to be a VIRUS in disguise is indeed a huge kick in the rear.
After all, are we so backwards in Wesley and Woodfordhill that we cannot find a real decent representative? Are we condemned to an attack of this VIRUS election after election? Aren’t there qualities that an individual running for public office should possess? Among those good educations, honesty, good reputation, just to name a few. To the selectors, can you really look into your hearts and honestly say that this prospective candidate possess those qualities? MAG WA SAH!!!
This VIRUS I’m referring to is very deadly and it will divide and eventually destroy our community. It has been eliminated from every committee in Canada which had the misfortune to allow it in their midst. Now, it is making its way among innocent, unsuspecting persons in the Wesley Woodfordhill constituency. It has already been vomited by the constituency; thus we should not be forced to drink back our vomit. This is akin to torture and we do not deserve to be tortured like that. We took a stand last election. We stamped out the VIRUS and under the good leadership of Mrs. Gloria Shillingford brought home the seat to the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) after thirty (30) long years amidst much chaos and uproar created by this virus. Now we are very saddened and pained at the prospect of having this virus returned in the guise of representation for us.
Alas PM, please, we are appealing to you. You have the power to stop this thing. Please listen to us and help us to keep this virus from infiltrating our constituency. I’m also appealing to the people of Wesley and Woodfordhill to be vigilante. Let us not allow this catastrophe to happen to us. Fellow Labourites from other environs, please join in the fight with us. We want to win the race. We do not want to be like Ian’s Doug. Remember, it always comes Las.

i ready!!! I feel your pain! What the PM is doing is not right. We do not yet know what it is that Miss Benjamin has on the PM. But its obvious she holds something over his head. In time it will come out. I am hoping it does not embarrass the entire country.
Miss Benjamin wants to be the Woodfordhill Parliamentary Representative ‘at any cost’. Any sober minded individual would have backed down by now. But not Miss Benjamin. Win or loose she has been guaranteed a Ministry by the PM. Did you not notice in 2011 how she was being given presence and prominence? She received a top award from the Canadian Attorney General for work beyond the call of duty; that same year she was refered as ‘ Crime Victim Specialist’ and almost given a project by the PM costing $12,000,000.00 with Dr. StJean. Luckily Cabinet would have none of it. But if you are a West Indian living in Toronto or if you are from Wesley you know that Miss Benjamin is not a specialist in anything. She did not take the opportunity to complete her high school education while living in Canada.She is never prepared to take the long walk and make the necessary sacrifice to achieve anything. In short she is a non-achiever. Why is it you want to represent the ‘people’ but you bypass them and try to get the blessings of the Boss only. ‘Its a done deal’ she boasts on FACEBOOK. She calls a potential rival candidate and demanded that he ‘stay out of that’ because she has been ‘hand-picked’ by the PM. What arrogance! Her relatives all love her because she is a relative. But hardly any of them will vote her and they do not defend her. why? Because they know her best! Why the people of Wesley are so opposed to her? Because they know her best! If the selection of Miss Benjamin by the PM is a reflection of their judgement and prediction of the results of the coming general election , then Bazil and the UWP must be smiling. The decline of the DLP has just commenced and Miss Benjamin and PM Skerrit will long be remembered for their efforts in bringing down the DLP.

Consider this. In those days parents had to pay for their children’s tuition and books. Could her parents afford it? This is one of the reasons why some did not attend High School. It was expensive especially if parents had a few children. In those days, the government did not help.
Today, D/cans are fortunate that they do not pay for high school.
Does it mean they are less brilliant than those who attended and graduated? By no means. Furthermore, she resided in Canada for some years and educated herself in whatever manner she chose and what was available to her.
Dodds is a wicked, jealous man. It is obvious that he will do all in his power to discredit her and to prevent her from being a candidate.
As there is a God above watching, listening and taking note of what we say and do, for our judgment, Dodds will pay for his mouth and wicked ways.

Dodds is one of the most loved man in Wesley! Highly regarded. Although he has lived abroad. He has been in Wesley living and making a living for for himself and his family for over fifteen years now. He and Ms Benjamin attained similar level of education.

That’s your concept, that is your belief in the quote above. I am not against Mr. Skerrit as you claim, nevertheless, when we give our support to a political party, that should not be an individual support. When we vote a party unto office we expect the party to produce. We expect the individual ministers to do whatever it takes to get the country on a path of prosperity, and progress. The Labor Party has failed thus far. I appreciate the State Building, that is necessary!
The Stadium is another thing, be it a gift from the Chines, or the taxpayers paid for it, the purpose it serves is of minor significant’s, since the activities there involves money, and if the people of the country lack earning power due to the lack of employment; they will not have the money to attend the functions in the Stadium when they are held.
As for the resurfacing, of roads that’s not a reason for a feather in ones cap, that is a continuous process within the infrastructure of the country, any government in office are obligated to repair the roads. Beyond the mentioned this government has not accomplished much!
Let us get to the issue of the International Airport; why should I or any Dominican continue to support a government which allowed outsiders to dictate to our government whether we should build an international airport or not? Our Prime Minister, the man I claimed to be my Almost Nearly Cousin allowed Ralph Gonzalez of St. Vincent, to influence him to spend almost a half of a billion dollars on an old dilapidated terminal building, and digging-up the river banks at Melville Hall, and installing landing lights on the Runway, claiming that will cause night landing, and that will serve our purpose.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez goes home to St. Vincent after telling our people we do not need an International Airport, and build one for his nation, St. Vincent International Airport, goes into operation later this year! Should the people of a country reward a government which seems prone to deliberate blonder’s by keeping them in power? Should the people of a country keep on rewarding a government which gives away $500,000.00 (five hundred thousand) dollars of taxpayers money to a the Roman Catholic Church, while a hospital in the village of Marigot is closed because it became infested with termites, and rodents? The health of the nation, the health of the people of Wesley, and Marigot, and Woodford Hill, and the people residing on the Carib Reservation should have taken precedence over the Roof of the Roman Catholic Church.
I do not have a personal grudge against Mr. Skerrit, as a matter of I can tell you I like the guy, for obvious reason, nevertheless, it is against my conscience to give him my support at this point and time. I believed in the man, I thought if anybody was going to change the status quo in Dominica, it might be him because at the time of he election as Prime Minister, he was yet young, and would have wanted what every young person in Dominica, wanted and deserve. What we got in fifteen years, is absolutely to little! If the Labor party had not shut down the International Airport that was in progress, the one the UWP was building, Our Prime Minister would not be held for ransom by Ralph Gonzales, and forced him to sink more than ten million dollars into LIAT, a none profit entity. We should not reward people for blunders!

In brief, what did you expect the PM to change during his tenure and which would affect you in anyway being all the way in Los Angeles? Why take it so personal?
Trust me, I do not take anything personal where it pertains to politics, because I have long discovered that politics is not a clean business. Its unfortunate though; that the politicians are the ones who create that sort of atmosphere in our country, and they do it simply to divide the people, in order to win.
The sort of politics played in Dominica, and the rest of the Caribbean is not found in any other place on earth; our people in the Caribbean who have become so accustom to that nonsense, seems to look forward to such nasty political rhetoric, and silly slogans every five years. They look forward to hear mow much the other guy stole, they look forward to here which politician is a thief, and the politicians just continue to wallow in that sort garbage.
I sat here yesterday, listening to Q 95: I heard the voice of one they said is the minister of Housing, his name is Austry, the way he conducted himself as an animal, screaming to the top of his voice, ridiculing the members of the UWP, is shameful; nothing he said made any sense; very few of his words I understood; nevertheless, I assume his supporters listening to him making that noise will get fired up to go out and vote for him. His conduct is the sort of nonsense his supporters like; but if you ask any of them: what did he say, I am sure the answer will be (I doh know, but I like it).
I have my rights to support the party and candidate of my choice, nevertheless, if the party of my choice loses, I do not walk the streets holding a grudged against the winning party, and if the party I did not support do something significant for the nation, it is also my responsibility to give them credit for the good they done. By the same token, when they make the blunders as this government has made over an fifteen year period; I will be relentless exposing their blunder.
I will become a loose, and dangerous cannon, I become a runaway fright train, if that is what it takes to get the attention of the people who has screwed up. Politicians are paid to serve the people of the country, whatever they do must be productive, whatever the result it should have an effect on the life’s of the people, it must enhance the life of the citizens of the country. Dominica contains less than a hundred thousand people; no matter what the population, more than half the population is out of a job. Does that make any sense? Shouldn’t it be easier to create employment for fifty something thousand people than a hundred thousand people?
Rather than McIntyre face reality, and say the only way we can resolve the job issue in the country is to industrialize; the clown asks “where are we going to find these jobs.” If one is in the government, a government minister does not know where his government is going to find these jobs today; how are you going to find them in another five years? So, that rhetoric impress on me that the status quo will remain the same for another five years, and at the end of that other five years, the sleeping giant will continue to sleep!
So, you see why I have to be critical of the government at the moment?

Seems like someone has to represent from Woodford Hill if Wesley people cannot make up their mind.
I am from the community of Woodford Hill. As a young person in this community I voice the opinions of the youth in my community.
We desire a community which will care for one another. A people who will stand together and join hands for development.
How democratic are we if one is not able to voice his/her personal opinion without being victimized.. without being deprived of the benefits that everyone should enjoy equally.
When someone is placed to represent, they are there to represent the entire community and constituency, regardless of ones personal party. Our youth are being victimized and deprived of job and scholarship opportunities because of who their father supports or grandfather supported. Are we for real?
I desire my children and grandchildren to be people who care for each other, who care for their neighbors and elders.
Forger the colors… forget the red…forget the blue… at the end of the day we are PEOPLE… WE ARE HUMAN…
Invest in the development of our human capital. Focus on what matters the most. Go back to the simple saying that we learnt in pre-school… if you have nothing good to say …… SAY NOTHING AT ALL!!!!!!!
Having read this article I think that these statements are very low and unbecoming.
We are speaking about the progress and development of a country and the betterment of the people. One of the many things that disgusts me in our country in the constant mudslinging of our very people.
We are Dominican wherever we reside, in whichever state, country or continent. . . and it is quite admirable when someone can decide to sacrifice their life and represent a country. The things that people say about our representatives are so negate that if they are not successful they may not even be able to secure a future job… well unless they know somebody that know somebody.
Let us concern our self with the development of our nation. Too many people are migrating to greener pastures and not looking back to invest in the country’s development.
Too many students are receiving scholarship and never returning to develop our nation.
How are we gonna survive if we continue this way? Like it or not the youth will one day become adults and what will become of the leadership of our nation? Are we culturing a people of HATE? A people of ignorance? A people who look to degrade and bring down others? a people who looks only for their pocket? a people who relies solely on hand-outs and oppose to self empowerment.
OUR COUNTRY NEEDS PEOPLE WHO ARE SELF-LESS AND WILLING TO MAKE PERSONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR NATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR YOUTH.

Do not worry. There will always be nationals in D/ca. Consider that through the years thousands migrated to other countries. Dominica still stands and from what I know, Dominica is far better today than in bygone years when those people resided in D/ca.
The problem today is, the division in Wesley. People have a right to comment based on what they perceive and according to their mentality and knowledge of this situation as posted on this Website. The PM will have to sort it out for it is not helping his Party.
I reside in a country that such would never occur. The candidates present their wishes and relevant information to the proper authority. If they qualify and accepted, then they will go on to campaign.
The riding I reside in there were seven of them; some campaigned as an independent. There is no fighting among candidates who would say, I am the candidate when the other who may not have been chosen refuse to give leeway.
What may occur is, if the votes are wrongly counted and a candidate won, then later the votes have to be recounted and the one who lost may be the winner. Mistakes occur.
I cannot believe what I read is occurring in D/ca. No section of the city electorates in a riding will say, we do not want this candidate and we want to choose our own candidate. Why have an election for them since they already chose whom they want?
If there is a problem we will hear of it. In reality, our elections, on Election Day are conducted in a dignified and peaceful manner. Thank God! If it were otherwise, I would not be able to stamina it and probably would not vote. No melee and mess for me.
Next time pay close attention to how elections are carried out. There are primaries where the people choose the candidate for a particular party. You should really be quiet. You are not helping Athenia at all. It is sad.
The Woodford Hill constituency is just the tip of the iceberg as regards to the Skeritt led DLP problems, wait when TimTim gets his walking orders. Since the DLP internal poll conducted by the Bajan feller, the ex Mayor has been walking around the Goodwill Constituency like Godzilla.

When we reside abroad, we must find this strange and laugh at it.
These people must be highly ignorant and also stubborn including of minute minds. The PM should inform them that they are not the ones in power. He is the authority and he has the first and last say in choosing and approving a candidate for any riding in his Party.
Almost a week ago Ontario held an election for a Provincial government. The Parties who campaigned went from door to door or sent their volunteers. They telephoned residents and tried to encourage them to vote for them with their promises. They also mailed brochures; some were placed at residents’ homes.
Constituents in each riding were invited to attend and participate in the candidates’ meeting for that riding. They would be expected to ask them questions of their plans for the riding/constituents. Those who were interested and had the time attended. The election went off peacefully at least for the constituents.
Canadians/Ontarians or in the US do not choose their candidate. They vote for the candidate of their choice, the best one who convinced them that they could help them and/or their riding but constituents objecting to a candidate and stating they want to choose their own is rather foreign and ridiculous to me.
Will some people ever become broadminded and learn that they are not the ones who choose the candidate in their riding? They are backward. In bygone years they did not choose a candidate. Why today they want to choose a candidate of their choice? I am baffled and also amazed that this is occurring in D/ca. With this type of mentally is it any wonder some people will never return home to stay permanently? There are also small minds which also project themselves on this Website by some of their ignorant comments. It is really shocking!
This is why D/ca will not progress. It is not the fault of the government but the fault of some people and their mentality who comment also on this Website who want to choose their own candidate. How ridiculous! Unbelievalbe that this is occurring in D/ca. God help Dominica and Dominicans indeed!

@face the facts… I think that you are confusing two things, Hilary Clinton was not chosen by the powers that be to contest the presidential election, she along with the other candidates ran against Barak Obama to become the nominee for their party.
In the same way that Laborites should be given the opportunity to vote for the candidate of their choice in that constituency and the winner runs against the UWP candidate.
You are referring to the Primary fora presidential candidate. The candidates of Wesley and Woodford Hill are not vying for the presidency or the prime minister.
Do not mistake the presidency for a candidate to represent the people or should it be compared to what is going on in D/ca, namely those villages as mentioned.
Hilary and Obama were “presidential candidates”. They vied against the other. Note the difference. At the end of their campaign, the polls and by the number of people who attended determined which one would vie for the presidency.
If you all want to emulate the US, then act like it and in a dignified manner.

I think you erred here but not willfully. First of all the candidate belongs to a Party. He/she resides in a town/village. Obviously the candidate will represent the constituents who reside in that area because they are familiar with them and the area.
Prior to doing this, the candidate must approach the leader of the Party or vice versa. If the leader accepts that candidate then he/she will represent the people in that riding. It is obviously the decision of the leader to choose/approve a candidate.
In this case, the people want to choose one candidate and refuse the other even though it appears that the latter was chosen to represent them. Some people are strange. It appears they get stranger every day.
All this ta la la about choosing a candidate. This should never be. Personally, I cannot believe this. As some will say, look trouble. Some people like to create problems and for themselves, making life more difficult for also others.

How can there be two vying for the same candidacy in the same area and same Party? Something is remiss. Was he not informed that she is the candidate? If Dominica is to move along, the time is right to vote the Labor Party out of power.

Well, if you are a Dominican, and especially from Wesley, you will realize that there are times in conversation, we even refer to a woman as “boy”. And besides even if I cannot recall meeting him, I am certain he is a relative of mine, therefore, I believe I can curse him out if I wish, but still respect him as a relative.
I think that old saying still stands: “blood is thicker than water.” I criticize Gloria openly in the past, I even advise her to get out of the Labor Party, I have been very critical of her, nevertheless, to the day I die I will love her as the daughter of my uncle. On the other hand Gloria’s children are double woven to me, like a spiders web; since they are the children of the son of my biological aunt; so you see how deeply a family connection we have in our village?

Leave her alone! Those of us who are broadminded will excuse her and overlook her errors. There are times this should be done. You weigh out the circumstance which is what you should have done.
She is passionate about where she resides and her Party. It appears she is very much involved in the Party and helping it. She wants Athenia to represent them and has a right to comment accordingly.
What is the problem? Athenia has ample time to meet them and communicate with them. As usual, some people do not know what is good for them until it is too late. It is much ado about nothing and a storm in a teapot.
Those who raise objections are not too smart. If they support their Party they should caste aside this type of discord and agree to Athenia representing them. This case should be closed.

Whatever, if the PM chose Athenia to represent that riding, he is within his rights. He knows well what he is doing. He recognizes that Athenia resided in Canada for some years and has a certain degree of experience as well as a vision for that riding. She did not return as an inexperienced person.

Well, Well, Well…. I now hear from Mr. Dodds and other well connected Laborites that Mr. Skeritt is a dictator, they did not believe it when it was said by his opponents but not that he is giving them “bitter and calling it sweet” they now realize the real truth.
Ms. Benjamin is determined to run in Wesley/Woodfordhill, as a matter of fact when she went down recently, she informed the people of Wesley that she was their Pal Rep. I am not sure if they informed her that there cannot be two sitting pal reps in a constituency, or if she even knows that she is supposed to contest an election at all.
This would be so very funny if the lives of my people were not involved, but the truth is after the last election Ms. Benjamin threatened to divulge what she knows, and I guess the people that she is holding the secrets for, are now afraid that if they don’t give her what she wants she will tell what she knows.
Ms. Benjamin specializes in victimization, just ask her cousins who got on her wrong side in Canada and found themselves deported right back to Wesley, ask the people that have had relationships with her how did things work out after the break up. I think that is what the people who have hand picked her knows. She will fight you like a man, I saw her fight a male teacher in Wesley school and break his glasses, poor man needed help to get home…. Wesley people stand up to these guys, we have never been a passive people, why now?… because the “anointed” one says so?

The PM is the boss. If he choses someone to represent them and their very own, what is wrong with that? They should be elated that someone who resided overseas for such a long time cared enough to return home to help her people.

Mr. Cleaveland Dodds, in your interview with Dominica News Online (DNO), there are thing that you will say and not say I am not questioning your way of thinking but there should internal and external matters that should be handled in other that we bring home every seat in the next coming election. I think by disclosing that the constituency is in “shambles” concerning the choice of a DLP candidate dose not go down very good with the public I think we need to keep improving the way we do this in the other constituency if the need ever surface again, but with all credit I know you can pull this off home for us in the next election.
People have freedom of speech. Is the P.M. that’s is causing this ruckus in the constituency by insisting he impose his candidate. Does he owe her any favors? So much for grass-roots democacy. it is a shambles.

If that is not so what is the point of having of having a party association in the constituency? Mr Pm as a strong supporter of the DLP I can speak about our choice of candidate for the last general election was imposed upon us in that same fassion and we suffered, now the Wesley constituency is devided because they are not involved in the choice making , I think the ppl should decide who they want for their palrep let’s do things right so we don’t end up loosing the seat, i’m very much concerned and the opponent is happy Mr PM listen to your ppl,Labour all the way.

Once the candidate is chosen, then the candidate commences to campaign and to meet the people.
If they choose their candidate, then it is futile to have an election in that riding. In this case, they would not need to go to the Polls for they would have already chosen one to represent them.
