A Dominican who was recently arrested at Gatwick International Airport in the UK, has been identified as the supplier in a major drug bust in Guadeloupe on Sunday June 2, in which six people were arrested.
Five Dominicans and one Guadeloupean were arrested during the raid in which 46 kg of cocaine, 60 kg of cannabis, three shotguns, a large quantity of ammunition and 91,000 Euros were seized.
French newspaper France Antilles-Guadeloupe, reported on Friday that on the same day of the Guadeloupe drug bust, the Dominican supplier was arrested in the United Kingdom
He has been identified as Curtis “Shakes” Richards of Newtown.
According to the report, Pointe-a-Pitre prosecutor Guy Etienne, described the arrest of the Richards in London as “icing on the cake”.
“One of the biggest, if not the biggest supplier of drugs between Dominica and Guadeloupe and some one who had contact with the South American (drug) sector,” France Antiles-Guadeloupe reported the inter regional director of the judicial police, Phillip Touyet, as saying.
The newspaper stated that Ricahrds, 51, was “the subject of a European arrest warrant” and had not yet been handed over to French authorities.
It said the six people who were arrested in Guadeloupe were all indicted on Thursday and are now in jail.
Dominica News Online (DNO) reported on Monday that a Dominican businessman from the Newtown area had been arrested at Gatwick International Airport in the United Kingdom.
In November 2010, Richards, along with Andy Prosper, was cleared of murder and conspiracy to commit murder charges.
The two men were arrested and charged for the triple murders of Mannison ‘Shabin’ Thomas of Fond St. Jean, Kenneth ‘Kamala’ Birmingham of Kings Hill, and Allan Bardouille of Newtown.
The bullet riddled bodies of the three men were found drifting off the coast of Salisbury in a boat belonging to Richards on November 3, 2009.

Some of the comments on this record breaking issue are really very unfortunate and highly biased. I am however happy that Shakes people are looking at things from a more mature approach. Have anyone in the media try to solicit the views from newtown people on this matter. I have read quite many of these comments from readers on this matter and not many of them make sense. Personally as an external based newtown person I join my people in supporting Shakes until the evidence and the court proves him guilty.

Good afternoon sweet Dominica. Well I am very surprised by the support this man is getting from Newtown. I don’t know what business this man owned in Dominica and wether its a legitimate or profitable business. Well when you are involved in the drug trade either one of two things will happen to you,(1) if you are lucky you will be arrested and sent to prison or (2) if you aren’t lucky you will be killed in the drug trade so Mr Richards is quite lucky after beating three murder charges. I don’t feel his pain rather I feel the pain of the three men who lost their life on the boat and the family of the cocaine addicts and crack babies he destroyed in Sweet Dominica. Newtown has produce many educated people who has contributed to our Country and that’s who I respect and admire from Newtown not the drug dealers who poison our citizens. Also is he going to say that it’s not his voice on the phone recordings after they tap his phone. When you are involved in criminal activity and you keep discussing you business on the phone you are giving evidence against yourself. Many of you have those smart phone but you all don’t have any idea how a telephone call is made much less how the communication system works. Don’t you all read about how The American Government is recording Phone Calls,Text and Emails of their citizens. Go in the community and speak to the people. I did some research and there is a dangerous sense of quietish hush hush on this matter. It seems like a deadly calm before some storm. It is frightening. However I was able to speak to some of my friends in some of the many “HOLES” in Newtown ( and there are many e’g from Sukie’s bayfront to as far as Li-lay co=co). One thing is certain and that is Curtis Richards does have phenomenal support in the community. Shakes is like a semi God to the youths. I am not surprised at the level of support he is getting on DNO but this is just a tip of the ice cream on the ground. Hence many persons are in a state of shock and denial at how popularly loved this man is in his hood. Newtown has always been a tightly knitted community hence am not too surprised that they are standing by their man. The economic dependence on Shakes is quite significant and if this pillar is removed from Newtown then this area will be subjected to even greater socio economic and mental health challenges. The onus is on the people and the state to get a more viable post Shakes alternative i.e if he fails to evade the legal grasp of the European Authorities. There may also be some forms of protestation by the people but I pray to God that this does nt happen because IT WILL NOT BE PRETTY: I was told of the tendencies of this Newtown people from time in History.

It would appear to me as if morality no longer exists in Dominica; to some people as long as someone is handing out free gifts of money to those who likes freeness, the receiver seems not to care about the source of the free handouts.
They do not care how many human lives was destroyed in the process of the agent of evil obtaining his money, and with a wicked conscience hands out a few pennies to appease those who look forward to his handouts, so that they can be on his side in a time like this.
Here is a man who was suspected of committing a heinous crime, the bodies of three murdered people was found in a boat belonging to this guy, though he was not convicted for the crime of murder, that is not an indication he is innocent; the proof may have evaded the police thus he may have narrowly escaped conviction.
Where there is smoke there is fire: Criminals are as such, they escape punishment for one crime, however they never learn, they never quit, because the believe they are more clever than anyone else. Nonetheless the crap they get away with in Dominica, they will never escape in another country.
Let’s see if his financial contributions he makes in New Town will keep his butt out of jail in London, Paris, or some pit hole in Guadeloupe!
It is comforting to note: that the person in the quote above recognized that in spite of his financial contributions to the people of New Town, life’s were lost, because of his poison ( the drugs) he sold to the youths, getting their money and without a human conscience gives handouts to probably a mother who’s child was murdered by the drugs he supplied them.

What the Dominican authorities failed to prove the French did. What is it the case that our local law enforcment officials lack the necessary tools to solve crimes? Do the criminals have people in strategic positions protecting them?
The end of the reign of a drug lord appears to be finally over. He could not escape from the British and French authorities.
I believe we need to look into the root of these issues.
Firstly, the reason why the drug trade exists it is because the corrupt 2% of the world’s wealthiest and powerful people WANT the drug trade to go on. If majority of the cocaine comes from Colombia for example, why not invade that country especially in the areas that facilitate the production of cocaine? Why is there not a concentrated effort to deal with Colombia and these countries where the drugs come from? It’s many decades that they know the sources of these dangerous drugs.
Secondly, we haven’t yet tackled the root of the issues in Dominica. Poverty, lack of jobs etc are not excuses to enter into criminal activities. NO FEAR OF ALLAH/GOD is the root of the problem in this country. Our youth these days due to their addiction to their false god materialism and their weak minds that’s why they are into the drugs. There are many poor countries in the world and it is because of their ethos and values they are not into drugs. We must remember that Dominica is a developing country thus its resources are limited.
Lastly indicting “Shakes” is not going to uproot the drug problem, another “head” will simply grow. I believe our country is plunging into a head dive to a path of destruction. Only Allah can save this country if they repent to Him.

There are many similarities between these regions Cultural, psychological and biological. Newtown has one of the largest number of non resident GrandBarians in Dominica. They share similar passions for the traditional culture, the trades , the arts and self sufficiency & entrepreneurship. In the area
of Human Resource development they are second to none ; maybe rivaled by Portsmouth/mahaut. Newtown is the home of traditional carnival and calyso. Its the headquarters and birth place for football. Its the bread capital of Dominica. It has the largest number of teachers and lawyers in Dominica. You can find trade men of every skill in Newtown. Some of the nation’s leading and hardest working home grown millionaires are from Newtown e’g Sukie, E H CHARLES , Annette St Hilaire, Mc Milan Jno Baptiste etc. Some of the best seamstresses come from Newtown; could you forget the indomitable MA BABA or Reliance Dress Shop fame and also Sarah Xavier, and many young ladies have continued with the tradition albeit on a smaller scale.
GrandBay can speak of its cultural ethos and also its very strong intellectual base. Its a rural community but has produced one of the brightest of legal minds that the Caribbean has seen and I speak about Dr NJO liverpool our former distinguished president and former Oecs JA. No need to speak about former PM Pierre Charles his work speaks volumes. Reference can also be directed to the true father of the nation E C LOBLACK he to was a proud product of Grand bay. It was this gentleman who walked through Dominica’s Ghetto with the UK Moyne Commission representatives to show them the nature, source and consequences of dirt poverty in Dominica and also offered solutions. Loblack is the father of the Trade Union Movement in Dominica and helped form the DLP and DFP. I need not speak about Midnight Groovers or Tradibelle or Orion or Ma tutu or Lambert Henderson etc. Grand Bay people also provide an invaluable service to the communities of Roseau and its environs; their vendors provide ground provision, fruits and vegetables etc at the Roseau Market from time immemorial. They are an industrious people. You cannot ask for a community that has a greater degree of economic viability than Sout City and their people in the diapora continue to make meaningful contributions towards all aspect of their village development and they do so far apart from remittances.
There is so much more to be said about Newtown and Grand bay. They are amongst the most badly labeled areas in Dominica and people especially the media tend to see them in bad light. I hope one day that the proper analysis be made of the contribution which these two commnunities have made towards national development. Clearly they do have their challenges and a lot more can be done to see them reach their fullest potentials. However the very vile, distasteful ,yet morally detestable oral outrage by PAPSO had to be answered. I need not even deal with the Religious and Political elements to his rectum discharge because it I did I might just have given it some semblance of attention which I don’t think its deserving. But truly it was quasi-blasthemous!!!!

London, England PRESS RELEASE – Police at Gatwick International airport on Friday arrested Curtis “Shakes” Richards on a warrant issued for drug trafficking by the Guadeloupian authorities. He was arrested when he disembarked from a flight originating in the Caribbean.
