Secret Bay hotel highlighted along with Dominica on CNN’s 7 secret Caribbean islands

With a population smaller than the average island in the Caribbean region, Dominica has been drawing more and more attention to herself from the International world through its diverse culture, unique people, exquisite hotels and one of a kind nature.

This has recently been emphasized by international news company CNN as Dominica’s Secret Bay Hotel and the island itself have rightfully claimed a spot on CNN’s 7 Secret Caribbean Islands.

The article described the island as a “large jungle-covered island” which attracts ecotravelers and invites visitors to stay at the 2 year old Secret Bay Hotel which offers nature hikes, kayaking and yoga.

“Guests stay in one of five tree house-style villas and bungalows, all built of Guyanese wood with floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor showers. Activities include guided nature hikes, kayak expeditions and yoga in an open-air pavilion.”

Other islands on the list include Cayo Espanto, Guana Island, Isla Holbox, Kamalame Cay, Peter Island, and Petit St Vincent.

Meanwhile, voting for Dominica to be named as the top Caribbean island on the USA Today’s 10 Best Readers Choice Travel Award Contest was closed on Monday January 6th. The final results will be revealed on Wednesday.

CEO of Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), Collin Piper, told Dominica News Online that the DDA is elated about the island’s achievement.

“We asked everyone to vote on a daily basis, not only Dominicans here but those abroad and we hope that everybody is telling their friends about it. It would be a wonderful accolade for Dominica to receive it if it can happen. We understand that it is not a popularity contest but where you have to vote, islands with large populations stand a better chance of winning but we are encouraged by the fact that Dominica is up there already in the top 3.”

Great to hear we reached CNN, but coming to think of it i have never heard of any of the other islands… it makes me wonder if this is really how the others see us 8-O ( hopefully this documentary attracted some tourists and attention )

This news is great news indeed, the prelude to better things to come for my lovely Dominica.
First there was national Geographic magazine potraying Dominica as the “lost Paradise”. I personally heard one of New yorks Premier travel agents calling Dominica “Heavy on Earth”, AND NOW CNN,, It is just a matter of time people before our beautiful country mushrooms into in Promise of Paradise on Earth.

I am elated because if CNN had said that Dominica was the worst island you would hear the doomsday merchants blaming Skerrit HURRAH for Skerro

why we proud of an award for undiscovered countries is a mystery to me. it’s ignorant behavior like this that makes dominica a contender on the list

Do we see the other islands on the list? Not really flattering. It reminds of our petiful saying that Columbus would still recognize Dominica if he were to return today.

I don’t see what there is to be elated about. This is just more evidence of dominica’s non existence in the global tourism industry. Just like me, you’ve probably never even years of any of.the other islands mentioned, so basically CNN is telling us something we already know; who has heard of an island named Dominica ? (Crickets)

i fully agree with you…nothing really to be proud about. Roseau looks the same as 30 years ago: its dirty, unfriendly and generally unpleasant for tourists…2 families control 90 percent of economy…access to the island is the nighmare and average tourist can stay on the island maximum 2 days…so what are you happy about? You really need to change the way things work on this island…

There goes i hope this will encourage us to keep our island clean and start practicing green methods, stop cutting down our rain forest, stop throwing away stuff in the ravines and river, set guidelines for people building close to our rivers, where and how they can build to avoid erosion, know when and how to cut down trees, lets appreciate what we have God have blessed us with natural gifts lets nurture them.

Good news for Dominica while some who want to replace the goverment paint it as the worst place on earth to live outsiders are seeing it in a different light.

God Bless Dominica. Thanks to CNN but do we really need someone to tell us that we have the most beautiful country? The place is just natural and original.

I think we need just a little more development but again we are not able to have everything. We still get by comfortably.

Dominica is indeed a beautiful country. The headache is getting here hassle-free. Our air access continues to be a huge turnoff for many. At the same time, I fear that if improved air access translates into greater visitor arrivals, our reputation as a pristine Caribbean destination might be compromised or lost altogether.

      January 9, 2014

what reputation are you talking about? its utterly unintelligible reason to be proud about…. can this mythical reputation somehow elevate 30% unemployment? Can this reputation make the healthcare and educatation better? Answer are no and no and no…

      • In His HANDS
        January 9, 2014

Can you imagine that our people are excited over one motel when the country’s basic need is so vast! You mean we are still talking about that? A palace was more important than a hospital. Our sick are spending so much money to go overseas for care or they die….Someone has to answer to God.

CONGRATULATIONS DOMINICA!!!!We need all this advertisement. But even though we are pretty, we need to control our crime rate. The Government and the laws of Dominica need to get in full gear to get our laws enforced on crime. We Dominicans have to do our part and denounce crime and don’t cover up.

Whatever happens in the dark must come to the light. We are natural and beautiful, but we also need tourist coming to bring revenue to our country. We have to sustain our beauty spiritually, and financially. We love our country, so we have to help, if we see something negative, we got to say something positive. Go our Dominica. Lord we love you for giving us this Natural Beauty, and let us appreciate ever bit of it. Thank you Lord.
