The Agricultural Industrial Development Bank (AID Bank) has awarded Keturah Thomas and Faith Christian, students of the Dominica State College, with full time scholarships to pursue their studies in Entrepreneurship and Agriculture respectively.  The scholarships are effective for the period 2016 – 2018.

Thomas received the 1st Hubert Nicholas Joseph Entrepreneurship Scholarship and Christian received the 2nd Robert Elford Henry Agriculture Scholarship.

AID Bank board director Leon Leblanc, highlighted the benefits of the scholarship as it relates to the easing of financial costs on the awardees.

“We are pleased to share that academic costs, including tuition and fees, books and exams, transportation and incidentals, are all covered as part of the scholarship package,” he said.

The students also received a laptop each to facilitate effective studying.

Leblanc urged the awardees to give their studies maximum attention in serious pursuit of the highest grade point average.

He said the AID Bank was proud to be a facilitator in the pursuit of the students’ education and future career goals.

Helen Ferdinand, daughter of Robert Elford Henry , in her address, encouraged Christian to “display a higher level of discipline, work hard and never settle for mediocrity.”

Son of Hubert Nicholas Joseph, Mickey Joseph, congratulated the recipients for taking the opportunity that they were given.  Joseph said that his father “had a very intuitive spirit” in terms of doing business and encouraged Thomas to “live up to the dedication and the excellence that he brought in terms of what he did.”

A memorial award was presented to the family of Hubert Nicholas Joseph by Director Le Blanc of the AID Bank, as a form of appreciation for the work that Joseph had done.

In congratulatory remarks, General Manager of the AID Bank Julius Corbett, advised the students to “take your academic work seriously” and encouraged them to view the scholarships as “something to boast about.”

“It is a big deal for us; it is a big deal for you, so we hope that you will look at it in that regard,” Corbett said.

Cash awards were also presented to Kareen George, Jair Pendenque, Almira Lewis and Daniel Panthier who participated in the debate on the topic “There should be equal legal repercussions for both men and women accused of domestic violence.”

In September 2013, the AID Bank approved the proposal for the 1st Robert Elford Henry Agriculture Scholarship in honor of the late Robert Elford Henry. In February 2016, the approval for the 1st Hubert Nicholas Joseph Entrepreneurship Scholarship was given.

Robert Elford Henry, who died in 2012, served as parliamentarian for the Wesley constituency for several years, chairman of the Banana Industry Trust and member of the Board of Directors of the AID Bank. He was also an active farmer and a former operations manager at the then Dominica Banana Marketing Corporation.

The late Hubert Joseph was a retired civil servant and businessman who co-owned and co-managed with his wife, Flossie Joseph & Co. Ltd, located on Old Street, Roseau. He also served on the AID Bank Board of Directors from March 2001 until his death in August 2015.
